Fire Coach Woodson Thread

He’s never registered on my radar enough for me to even consider the question. Let me think…yea, I guess I liked him enough as a player. I was around when he was ipfw and he did a decent enough job, I guess. So…I don’t know…

The broader question is: wtf would the IU administration be listening to a 21 yr old f’n kid? 21 yr old kids are idiots with the worldly wisdom of gnat. Lots of athletes in his position make loyalty plays for their favorite assistants. Why would any adults even listen to it??? It speaks volumes about how unserious an administration Indiana is/was.

If there were an adult in the room and they had told Fife to pack his bags and head for the Michigan border because we have this young coach named Jay Wright we’re bringing in, would anybody even care? Sure, a lot of the old guard would have cried at the time. But by now they would all lie and say they always knew we should’ve dumped Fife, Alford, Buckner, Gonzo et al and went with the talented young guy who brought us more championships.

I can’t wait for a DC search firm to identify Jerome tang as our top target.

They made Davis coach because it was a few weeks before practice was to start at the end of September, and there was no way they were going to get a team together for the season. If you remember, Pat Knight went off on Davis and one of 2 others from the staff that stayed because they weren't being loyal to RMK, but they did recruit those players. Were they just supposed to give up on those kids they made promises or built relationships with?  Knight wrote in his book a few years later that he was trying to stay around because he knew that team had a chance to be special IIRC.  A few years later, I was working in Bloomington helping out our owner's other franchise there (I was working in Evansville) before the fall semester was to kick in, and a guy I was working with knew a handful of boosters at that time.  He told me that several boosters had Pitino lined up to take the job if the administration would've gotten their heads out of their a$$e$ and not want to stick that knife into RMK a little deeper by hiring Davis.  Because from what he said according to the booster is that Davis was decent enough and they really wanted to screw with RMK some more.  Pitino really wanted the job and was choosing between IU, Michigan, and Louisville, and IU was more like UK because of the tradition and the area.  I didn't believe the guy too much till you hear all the stories years later and see the pattern of those in charge just not letting some people do their job.  They need to let Dolson just do his job and make the right hire because I believe that he wants the program back to the top where we want it and belongs.  Also, screw and fire Mike Woodson since he is another result of people shoving their heads in places they don't really belong!!

I heard the Pitino stories as well.  Another great "what if" in IUBB history.

I pray they leave Dolson alone to make this next hire.

Yeah, I didn't believe it too much until you hear all the other stories about people shoving their noses in places it doesn't belong just to make someone angry or to appease someone else.  Successful organizations don't normally do that because they have faith that the people they put in the positions will do their job unlike Woodson who doesn't want to do half of his job.

The fact no one else wanted him for HC should've said he was the wrong guy.

100%. Some thought well he could get high level talent. Well he has high level talent and he still stinks.

Woodson is a horrible coach that no one wanted to hire... and a loathsome human being...
It's Indiana... It's Indiana.
Will the king attend the football tonight game or is that beneath him? We know he refused to support the women's team. He is the most divisive coach we ever had and like you said a loathsome human.

Yea.  When the NBA passes on him as a HC for seven years, and he was interviewing for HC jobs, that's a red flag.

He was interviewing for HC jobs? Did he make them come to him or was IU the only one pathetic enough to do that? I'm guessing knew he had the IU job in the bag so that was just a power play.

Ha.  I know after he was fired from the Knicks he interviewed for the Kings HC job, Knicks HC job again, and maybe a few other teams.

Without Quinn to put in the fix, no one was going to hire him to be a HC again.

He interviewed to be hired again as the Knicks head coach and was a finalist for the job.  When he didn’t get it, he agreed to join as an assistant.  He was actually pretty well liked there.

Don't forget, he took two years off from the NBA in 2018-2020.

By James Dolan, one of the worst owners in pro sports. The players were not fans (Amar’e Stoudemire was particularly outspoken). The media was what you’d expect from NY media toward a mediocre coach of the Knicks. Fans were joyous at his departure and “meh, whatever” about him as an assistant.

I’m not a Woodson fan and I’m ready to move on, but many of the players in New York liked him.  And if you look at the Knicks results over the past 20 years, Woodson’s partial first year and second year were pretty good, comparatively.  He had quite a bit of support to get a second run as their head coach.  And again, I’m not saying that because I want him to stay, it’s just a fact.

Yes, those are things that some of us used to try to convince ourselves this could work out when he was hired.

I remember.  Unfortunately, it’s not going to work out at IU.
Imagine thinking your the king of indiana when the women's bbal and football teams are far more successful than your team. The dude is beyond delusional. When your surrounded by yes men that's what happens

Doesn't sound too dissimilar to how some here have said we handled talked with Stevens last coaching search with how many people were supposedly involved.

Only person I blame for our failures is Mike Woodson. HIS execution was atrocious.

Allowing yourself to lose in, essentially, the same fashion for 3.5 years is the absolute most absurd thing I've witnessed.

He uses the same excuses over and over because he's clueless as to what is wrong or how to fix it. It's obviously not his system so it must be that the players can't execute.

It always looks the same no matter what pieces he has. Stale offense with a few predicable sets. Decent in the PNR. Decent in the high low. Defenses lack of intensity is what kills me more. But his mediocre ball on offense and near abysmal ball on defense.

Can’t wait to see who runs the ship next season and what kind of roster we have. Which is a shame because I like a lot of our guys. But I’ve been ready to see a different voice.

We can agree to disagree…
