Depends on what that coach does prior to his first loss. 

 

If he starts off like he was shot out of a cannon, lands high-level players, kills the press conferences, preaches toughness and accountability and has a fun style to watch, fans will be more lenient. If he's like Archie Miller and gets zero roster additions his first 3 months, looks scared every time he's interviewed, doesn't have any kind of clear plan, and his team can't score...well, you get the idea.

Ehh disagree. IU falling further into irrelevancy with each passing year only adds to the desperation and increased noise. We want to try and replace the last 30 years overnight. It’s never going to happen. Better win and better win quick or you don’t have a prayer.

To be fair, the fans gave both Woodson and Crean more time than they probably should have. Crean deserved a lot more criticism than he received, especially in year 3. That was a much worse year than it should've been. He should have been facing some heat then, but he did have some better players coming in, so that mitigated things a bit, but the team showed some regression that year. 

And Woodson's coaching issues were very evident early in his coaching tenure.

IU fans have gotten a bad reputation among B1G fans for not being patient...

Dude. It just takes one coach. It's like Alabama football. Each coach isn't a slave to the history of the program. Everything is in place to be a monster, all IU needs is the right coach.

Again, you don’t have the slightest clue as to what you’re talking about. He won the SEC during the 18-19 season, the year prior to the tournament being cancelled.

I was exaggerating some and trying to explain to AH that it wouldn't just be a thread if Brownell was hired. I assume if we hired Wade people would get upset early if he lost a few

Look, I'm sure to some people here 1987 wasn't that long ago. But for people like me, who have never seen much success for such a historic program, a guy like Wade would win at a rate not seen in a long time. Fact is that we are no different than where Houston was before they took a chance on a 2 time cheater like Sampson.

You're saying "its's never going to happen" ... yeah, we won't replace the last 30 years over night. Better win and win quick... yeah, that can happen. It's definitely possible in today's CBB landscape. Fan noise always exists at big programs. If it becomes excessive, it's probably because there are major issues. The fans will absolutely give the new coach the benefit of the doubt when they start. 

You mentioned an O/U of 2.5 seasons earlier before fans turn on them.

If you can't give fans a reason to be optimistic during the first 2.5 years, how can you argue they deserve more than the 4 years they always get at IU? If there is excessive noise for a calendar year, as there has been for Woody, it'll be because there are major issues. 

A vicious cycle? Not really... just crappy job of hiring/firing basketball coaches for the past quarter century. 

Make the right hire for the first time in a long time and the fanbase is a huge factor in waking up a sleeping giant. 

BTW, Purdue is about to unseat us and move into 10th place alone on the all time wins list tonight.

Because while Brownell is NOT anyone’s first choice (that I’m reading) at least he’s a moderately successful coach who hasn’t been banished to McNeese St for misconduct.

All of this negatively is so weird. There's never been a better time in college basketball for a big-time program to be struggling. With NIL and all of the money and the transfer portal, the ability of a good coach to flip a program quickly has never been easier.
