Fire Coach Woodson Thread

This was never about job performance for some. This is retribution for the butt hurt “fans” who were told to chill out after getting worked into a frenzy over fabricated reports from Rabjohns, “insiders”, etc believing Bruce Pearl was coming to coach the Hoosiers. Nothing more, nothing less.

I would say for most, it’s a bit about what you just posted and more than a bit about job performance. I also think it’s more than a little bit about Woody’s public persona, which clearly rubs many the wrong way whether he’s a really good guy or not.

You may not agree with the persona dislike by so many, but it’s real and it’s relevant.

Nope. Many of us wanted him gone from day 1 because we saw how bad of a hire he was. Nearly four years later and he’s done nothing to show otherwise - both on and off the court.

Maybe a little, but it's mostly job performance.  The things most people noticed were (i) we finished the season in the 90's (as in over 90 teams were ahead of us) in the NET and KenPom, not close to making the tourney, and (ii) we had no (zero) HS recruits.  That's very bad.

Sure enough.

But years one and two went pretty well. However, when a coach in his mid 60’s is at the helm there’s a win-now dynamic that needs to trend toward an ultimate success without much drop off.

What is Woody’s public persona? He’s arrogant and egotistical? Fits the persona of 95% of those who coach at high level jobs. People felt they were personally wronged on senior day. I stand by that.

He had a single bad year. If every coach who had a single bad year was met with this type of reaction there’d be no more coaches. And getting this caught up on HS recruiting when there’s all out free agency in college basketball is certainly a choice.

Year 1 was pretty meh. We finished the regular season 18-12 and 9-11 in the conference, managed to sneak into the tournament after winning a couple of BTT games, before getting curb stomped by Saint Mary’s in the round of 64.

Year 2 was better but underwhelming compared to the preseason expectations, and it too ended with a blowout loss early in the tournament.

Combine the on-court results with his very prickly personality and lackluster effort on the recruiting trail and it’s crystal clear that this isn’t just about one “true fans” incident.

When a coach has three years to build up a program and year three is a total disaster on the court and recruiting, it's obvious he isn't the guy and there are many better options out there.  The goal is to have the best possible coach at IU.

I get it, you like Woody a lot.  That's fine it's a free country.

Should I list some of the disaster year 3 records for some of the coaches at other schools that many on here are advocating for?

This thread had 670 pages before senior day.

I'll pass, I doubt your arguments will be any good judging from your posts.

You do realize this is a thread about firing Mike Woodson?  There is a Do Not Fire Mike Woodson thread that is a better fit for your viewpoints.

Please do

-Bruce Pearl was 18-14 at Auburn in year 3, redacted to 6-14 after having to forfeit 12 of those wins because they used two players implicated in the FBI probe

-Dusty May was 13-10 at FAU in year 3

A few observations:

13-10 at FAU in year three was considered pretty damn good when Dusty did that. That was the equivalent of IU football going 7-5 pre-Cig.

When Bruce Pearl had a bad year three it was at a football crazy school with lower expectations. And Pearl was much younger than Woody was in that year three. And Pearl had seven straight NCAA appearances at Tennessee, including three sweet 16s or better.

Pearl was 58. But my point is that those guys weren’t fired after disaster third seasons (like the person I responded to suggested) and instead given time to correct their mistakes. IU is 13-3, 4-1 in the B10 with some incredible opportunities ahead and yet most seem to be fixated on some fantasy that Brad Stevens can’t say no a third time.
