At least we are self-aware!

Better than the Maryland and Notre Dame model of “take a lot/don’t make many.”

I remember when Jamal Meeks and Chris Reynolds used to pass up a lot of wide-open 3's too.

I get it.  It’s a terrible situation for IU and for fans that watch IU with neither option a good one.   Getting outscored by 17 pts a game from the 3pt isn’t ideal.   Having a roster of non shooters isn’t helping however pounding the ball inside against top level competition isn’t going to work either.   Getting smashed by 28 and 20 by the only sure fire tourney teams IU has played this year while not utilizing the 3 didn’t work.    Like I said no good answer for IU this year.   Where my concern comes in to play is being told by the coach that they will play a certain way after TJD left and then completely going back to the way he played with TJD.    This is a me problem though.   I can’t stand the way they play and for it to be the team I’m invested in stinks watching them play the style the coach is having them play.   Luckily for me I watch a ton of basketball so I can actually watch modern day basketball but to say I’m frustrated with they way IUs style of play is as of today would be an understatement

Agreed this is the roster and we're stuck with it. I also agree I don't like the style of play we are playing either. I never thought this would be the offense when Woody was hired. I also understand you have to play to your personnel but we should have better options by now. But we can't change that mid-year so just have to ride this out.

Which players would you want to take more threes?

Everyone. Shoot the freaking ball. Playing defense against us is so easy. None of our guys look at the basket when they catch on the perimeter. Our guards catch and wait for the screen. Never look at the basket. Bigs on screen and pops, just catch and wait.

But what I don't understand is if we suck at shooting 3's, then why would we want our guys to take more of them. Believe me, I want a team that shoots at least 25 a game. But I look at our roster and can't think of anyone I want just hoisting up reckless 3's

We can all agree the play style completely blows, but there is nothing that can be done now. The complaining about it has been warranted but I think at this point we all know it isn't going to change so hopefully we can all stop beating the ever living **** out of that dead horse haha

I don't think our guys are actually this bad at shooting. We have an offensive system that discourages shooting. An offensive system that doesn't get 3 point looks often. A coach that doesn't instill confidence in our guys to shoot the ball. This team desperately needs an OC. I don't think the 3 top assistants could coach their ways out of a wet paper bag.

This is only me but in the 2 games against tourney level quality not shooting 3s resulted in a 28 and 20 pt loss.   Maybe if they chucked more 3s in those games they don’t get beat as bad or maybe the get beat by more.   All I’m saying is we know how it’s going against the top teams when they don’t utilize the 3 with this flawed roster just give me a game where they do bombs away from 3.
The  ceiling on this team is already set for this year for me.  IU can and probably will find a way into the  tourney as a 8-12 seed.    But in my opinion they won’t do much if they make it.

Moving forward I need to see more games against teams that will be on IUs level.   UConn, Kansas and even Auburn are all top 18 teams in the NET.   IU isn’t on that level just yet especially playing on the road or neutral courts.    People dogging on Auburn for losing to App St need to realize App st is a solid mid major this year (top 45 in NET) and Auburn played them on the road.  Auburn only losses   are on the road to App St and to Baylor on a neutral court.

Why doesn't our 5 star FR just, you know, hit the 3s that he gets during the game now? He shoots 3.5 per game in 21mpg. 2-7 from 3 against Auburn.

We aren't going to be better at shooting 3s until we get XJ back, we can't create enough good ones without him. Barely can with him.

I suppose we should start a game thread although looking at everyone's predictions there's not a lot of optimism.

Great post. I'd enjoy watching more 3s/modern offense and honestly based on the results of our big games so far, I'm hoping the staff is at least open minded to the idea. I don't think it's essential to shoot 20+ 3s to win every game, but not having that in the arsenal definitely pigeon holes us a bit and makes it easier to game plan against us.

He is FAR from a complete basketball player but IMO we're not really seeing Mack be put in the best position to thrive. Team success comes first (obviously) but he is the best bet at getting a perimeter threat going. I'd like to see him get more kick outs from Reneau - he could probably get at least 2-5 every game from what I've seen. Mack needs to be better about when to catch and shoot vs put it on the floor too of course. If the shots fall great, if they don't, they're usually at least close enough we give ourselves a chance at an offensive rebound. To me it looks like he is playing afraid to make a mistake/get called out for shot selection. Turning him loose from 3 like we did the first half of the Auburn game  would let him play a little more up and down the court, get into a good rhythm... that's more his game.

He's gotta be more active on the boards and still has a longgg way to go on defense ... as I said, far from complete... but don't think we've gotten even close to his best yet. I'd like him to keep starting but get more minutes with the bench unit (if we're really going to stick with that...). If the personnel rotations don't change, I don't see us finishing where we need to in the B10.

In the grand scheme of things, the platoon subs are probably my biggest concern (that and lack of backcourt depth). Then rebounding/defense. Then... either lack of playmaking or 3 point shooting. It's going to be very depressing if tomorrow goes the way of UConn or Auburn. Really would like to have some reason for optimism!

I think any opposing coach would be smart to play a 2-3 zone and tell his guys to never step outside the 3pt area. As long as you're close enough, out guys won't shoot.

No idea why he isn’t hitting them more but even good shooters usually struggle as freshman.   I wish he shot more of them instead of passing them up in some instances.   I’ve posted several screen shots of players this year where I would have liked them to shoot the ball instead of doing whatever they ended up doing.  If I was brave enough to watch the Auburn game again I’m sure I could find instances where players past up shots even with X being out

It's pretty common. Count just how many times they don't even look towards the rim. They just stand there and wait for a screen. Over and over and over. That's 75% of our offense.

I mean... he's a starter at Indiana. FR or not. He has to hit shots.

But we have some guys who can hit the 3. Just because they're not hitting well so far generally this season doesn't mean they can't shoot. We need the staff to encourage and set up outside shots as part of our offense. Imo, that is not happening, and that is part of the problem with connecting.
