Class of '66 Old Fart

IUBB vs #2 Kansas - Saturday, 12.16.23 @ 12:30 on CBS

Recommended Posts

I know it’s a message board and negative opinions are part of the territory, but now that I’m jumping in this thread, some of the hot take negativity is mind-boggling.
Today we saw the potential of this team, and saw it earlier than I hoped for.
Cupps was excellent again. Extremely mature against a top 5 pg nationally in only his tenth game. As the game slows down for him his offense will come; certainly during his time at IU.
Gallo is a worker. So when his shot broke he got to work and fixed it.
Mgbako continues to trend better defensively and that matters a ton.
Ware an Malik are a load…with tournament game winning talent.
The two backup bigs are active and athletic.
The third guard for March? We need X back 100%. Cupps is a good, low risk third guard.
Before I submit this post, I want add that I am NOT interested in moral victories, and this is not a ‘moral victory post’
Instead? It’s an assessment of the team’s potential, which is so, so much higher than last year. We can be the 8 seed that no one wants to face.
Everything you said in this post is true and very possible. It is also things that should happen! However I think most iu fans are conditioned to not think those things will happen until it actually happens.
It's more likely Gallo goes back to his previous ways and iu don't compete like that in all the games to get the results we want. We let teams get hot from 3 and give up. I fear this team shows us some reasons to be optimistic but never really gets over the hump to get good results. I hope we have turned the corner and we do some positive things the rest of the way and do some good things in the tournament.

Woody has been pretty clear about goals: win the B1G and win National Championships. Pretty sure he never mentioned seed line in those goals.

This team has a better chance of reaching those goals than any team since 2016.

With how this team is built though I don’t see above a 8 seed. After this season the expectations obviously are higher. For this season I think a lot has to go right be a 8 seed. I think 7+ seed is miles away from where we are now. We don’t even have a quad 1 win yet. If we are an 8 seed that’s not the end of the world.

Banks should only play spot minutes and that is it.

I thought the last game he really did a good job taking it to the hole. There will be minutes for him. He was in a bad matchup today because Kansas has a bunch of long athletic wings who frustrated him trying to drive to the basket. Against Purdue and Wisconsin and whatnot, he’ll get buckets if he continues to slash.

Missed the whole game, Just got back, was hoping our guys pulled it out, but wow Gallo.
Talk about breaking a slump. He won’t score like that much but this will do worlds for his confidence— think we will see the Gallo we were hoping to see more and more regularly now.
Backo definitely on the up too. Wish we’d won, and will have to watch the replay, but seeing positives

After the Auburn game, we were all scratching our heads and wondering if this team will ever turn the corner.  After todays game, and the improvements that the team has developed under coach Woodson and staff’s guidance, I can honestly see the potential of this team.  The ceiling is much higher now than what we all thought!  Once X gets back, the rotation tightens up, we could compete for the B10 title.  I can honestly see 5 guys in double figures by the end of January, as long as everyone excepts and knows their roles.  Balanced scoring is hard to defend, and a problem to have

He’s the 8th guy, and will see minutes but Walker and Cupps will be 6th and 7th man.

Kansas only shot 2 more FTs than IU. It doesn't matter though, if the refs make the difference you didn't deserve to win.

The staff built a roster not suited to modern ball, not inherited but built. The staff built a roster that can't shoot. The staff put together a roster that lacks athleticism. When the same problems keep popping up, blame the staff not the zebras.

Lost by 4 to Kansa and the roster sucks.  Got it.

I think 8 seed is the ceiling. We need more depth to reach that. Johnson has to stay healthy too

I assume we will have to win 15 big ten games to make the tourney now. It was a good effort but we really needed the win.

The Auburn game was bad. And so were a couple of the early season stinkers versus nobodies.

But…as a matter of perspective…Uconn whipped Gonzaga last night at least as bad as we got beat. It was never really close.  And when i flipped on the Purdue game the Peacock guys were talking about how well Indiana played and how they can build off this. It was Josh Pastner, but still…

I hear you but this is getting old. Three 5 stars in our starting lineup, and zero marquee nonconference wins.

A team with this much star power should not have to sweat it out on Selection Sunday.

We're likely gonna have to spend March rooting against a lot of bubble teams.

Ugh what a deflating loss today was.

Not that I put any weight on "star" evaluations, you might want to check your math.

Exactly!  To me, the entire team took a step forward in most aspects of the game!  This is not a moral victory but it is a giant confidence builder

I guess I may never get to the point of iu losing at assembly hall and finding positives. I remember when we went into a big game like that and expected to win and it was devastating not to. I am not attacking or blaming the positive posts in this thread! I like reading them and enjoy the point of view. It does show me how far we have fallen and how far we have to go.

If purdue loses to Zona I don't think many of their fans will try to find positives in the game. That's the difference of where our programs are and it is devastating to me. When you get to a certain level winning becomes the expectation and we need to get there. I believe we are farther from that than many fans think.

What's wrong with my math?

Ware, Mgbako, and Reneau were all 5 stars and are in our starting lineup.

It was definitely a disappointing loss, given the big leads through the first half and first half of the second half. Zebras screwed us a time or two, but if we're going to ever be taken seriously, even amongst ourselves, we have to stop crying about the refs. The game gets called how it gets called and the key is making adjustments to that dynamic. And if a couple of calls is the difference between a W and an L, well, we just weren't good enough today.

Galloway played his heart out. Props for that. Hopefully whatever was troubling him is now behind him. Cupp's line was less that I hoped for, but he played a solid game against some tough competition ... and he's only 10 games removed from high school. Still not impressed with either Gunn or Banks. Good to see Mbako's game coming along. Ware is solid and did ok against Dickinson. Not a "moral victory" post, but there is a lot of positives to take away from this one... IU needs to find a way to close out a game with the W. Hopefully Woody can get it done.

And we're still 2-0 in the B1G...

It's not about this IU team in particular. There's a lot of potential. Unfortunately because the big ten has done so horribly out of conference, that  even if we have a great team we might get the boot regardless if we put it all together.

Exactly, that means we have a chance to go 20-0 in the B10!
