Game Thread: IU vs FGCU - 11/7 @ 6:30 on BTN

Recommended Posts

When they get their point guard back FGCU is a little better than Penn State, Nebraska and Minnesota.  I actually think they are as good as us right now and could finish 6-8 in the B10, IMO
I believe you are wrong but hopefully we get better

I missed most of the game so some help would be welcome. I'm looking at the box score and see Mgbako played only 18 minutes. Was he ineffective (not much in the way of stats in that time) or did he get injured?

Let’s just say. He had a bad game tonight. Has a lot to learn on the defensive end

Thanks. I thought that was probably the case but wanted to make sure. Just started watching the game from the beginning.

I’m going to go ahead and say a few things that will probably not be liked by most here. He’s probably our most “skilled” player at a position than any we have but MR may be best coming off of bench. He hurt us on perimeter d and rebounding. And Cupps over XJ?

XJ is so frustrating to me. He would make a great backup option. Just my opinion

I thought that too but who would start in MR’s spot?  X is frustrating and is a fundamentally flawed player but is a very good defensive player.  Cupps is young and has a lot to learn but his first game in an IU uniform was solid and will be a fan favorite

Totally lost on D and couldn’t afford for him to be on the court late + Cupps playing really well.

Total overreactions from game one, but here they are: our backcourt still isn't talented enough to compete on a national scale, and at times in the second half we still looked like an Archie Miller team, which is kind of alarming to me.

If there were an Archie Miller coached team, once we were down 48-42 we would have lost.  I do feel much more comfortable that when we play a "C" grade game that we are much more likely to win now than then.

They are not overreaction at all

When I mean now, is the fact that this team has a high ceiling because they have a chemistry issue because of a lot of new players that are all trying to find their role.

They aren't.  But I would have been shocked if after our opening game the conclusion would have been anything other than we would struggle to compete on the national level with our guards.

Cupps with XJ.   No worries with X.  MR is not a good perimeter defender but you can throw it down to him and he can get buckets.  He is fine.

Of note:  the guy that Robbie Hummel kept saying 'has the second greenest light after Isaiah Thompson" on FGC's team -- Chase Johnston -- was 3 of 12 from the field and 3 of 15 overall.  The guys who were hitting against us were Zach Anderson and Dallion Johnson.  Johnson was a little used guy from Penn State  Anderson is a decent player but not known as a bulk three point shooter -- averaged one made three per game last year.  Those two were 10 of 18 from three tonight.

Side note:  don't know who keeps IU stats but they keep criminally undercounting Ware's blocks.  Credited him with three but I know there were a couple that he got a hand on that altered the path on misses.

We finally woke up and played well for a 15 minute or so stretch in the second half with a three guard lineup without MM (ie he didn’t play for a long stretch in the second half).

To Woodys credit he let that three guard group keep rolling/playing. I loved that Woody did that because too many times it seems as though coaches automatically revert back to the starters, no matter what, after a timeout.  In the post game Woody mentioned that FGCU’s size was one of the reasons for countering with a 3 G lineup.

I have little doubt MM will see a lot of playing time this year.

Regardless of the fact he is a Purdue alum, I like Robbie Hummel as an analyst. I think he's among the best, and I've thought this for awhile now. Sorry if something similar was posted. I'm sleepy and I don't want to look through posts tonight.

Beyond that:

Gabe Cupps is so promising. He's the type of player who elevates everyone else with inspiring play, threatening their position, or going against.them in practice.

I want to see Ware put up monster numbers. I know he can. He's showing signs already that he's not in Oregon anymore. His increased minutes at IU should increase his numbers dramatically and get him drafted early.

I like what I've seen of Walker thus far, and he's much more than I predicted. His versatility, experience, intensity, and athleticism will prove crucial at moments throughout this season.

Galloway scoring points should be expected every game. I love Galloway.

Reneau, if he can stay out of foul trouble, could be a big-time player with a breakout season. I expect more from him this season than probably anyone else on the roster.

Payton Sparks was out again tonight, but as someone who has watched nearly all of his games at Ball State, I think he'll have much more of an impact than most predict still. He's behind some studs, but I think Woodson will find it very difficult to keep him on the bench. Godspeed.

I root hardest for Johnson. I really want him to finish with a phenomenal season and impressive team results. I think we'll see more than one game where he takes over the game.

Couldn’t watch the second half, but not to surprising of a final score considering the first half let alone the first game.

Hopefully Woodson figures out the offense. I have an idea but it might be a bit too early if a suggestion. Need to see more of Malik.
