I agree that they need to find a plug and play guy. Missing on Fland necessitates it. But I want 3 PG’s and I’ll be disappointed if there isn’t a ‘24.

I’m curious where you’re at with regard to Cupps going forward after what we’ve seen this year.

I love Cupps. He’s going to have a productive career. But I really like dynamic primaries who can either force bad matchups or can identify them and exploit them. I’m confident he can do the latter. I’m not confident he can do the former. I think he fits best in a 3 guard system with a lot of motion. Watching him in high school I thought he was perfect for a Jay Wright sort of system. No evidence that’s Woody’s cup of tea. But he’ll always  find a role because he’s too smart not to.

It doesn’t look like it.  He’s had opportunities to play a 3 guard lineup but instead keeps playing a center and 2 forwards

You make it clear on where you stand and know many feel the same but Crimson Quarry posted a great analysis the other day showing how poor 3 guard lineups work across the big ten. Something to think about.

Woody has us 13th in the B1G by metrics. That’s something to think about too.

Where exactly do I stand?  You seem to have a clear picture of that as well as others.  I want lineups that win and compete and I want a coach that is willing to try different lineups to see if they work, especially certain matchups.  But I’m glad you have a clear picture of that!

You seem to be sure that it is system and not roster. Have said many times he owns that and failed this year. Just don’t believe his “system” is as big of issue as some. Especially not offense. defense I could get behind. Mainly because it just seems too hard for guys to understand and pickup.

with right guys, some of this goes away.

So let me ask this. If we get Queen do you want us to start Queen, Reneau, MM, and McNeely next year? If we don't get Queen and since we're losing Ware do you think we should go to the portal for another big man?

It sounds like you're saying you don't mind playing the two big guys with a big wing with them. I think McNeely is going to be much better than Mgbako was as a freshman. I still want both of them on the team. I would start both of them together with Reneau and bring Queen off the bench. I will say from what I have seen already that Queen handles the ball better than Ware and Reneau. Maybe even Mgbako too

Well…. Lot of questions there

first - ideally 2 new starting guards. One true point guard and one dynamic shooting guard. Nothing else matters until that is right. Trey is off bench. Both from portal unless a JHS caliber becomes available.

As far as rotations and who plays where - the MM situation has to play out first. If he isn’t here, pretty simple. Queen, Malik, McNeely. I think that is the most likely situation and yes, I would be 100% good with the 2 bigs with the proper guard play. To your point, Queen handles well and Malik is improving a lot there and hoping for another jump.

Like it or not, as I started a new post on that didn’t get much interest (guess complaining about 20 year old hiring mistakes and admin issues is more fun) - the Big Ten almost forces some of this. If you try and go small, it is very hard to do successfully. Few teams have tried and not great success. The 2 bigs can work fine with guards who can hit shots, create, etc. Purdue is just one example.

now, if MM is back as well, great problem to have. Good teams have abundance of talent and you don’t stop recruiting guys like Queen because we have enough there and need guards (see silly stuff like that all the time from fans).  In that case, practice work sorts some of it, you can play a variety of rotations and do different things based on matchups.

I will say, McNeely from an offensive perspective does have some 2 guard in him. Put it this way, he is as much a 2 guard as Trey is. He can handle well and his passing is very good. They ran him almost at point down the stretch few weeks ago in that down to the wire game. Gave him the ball and let him decide.  So option there with the right point to play really big at times.

Ultimately, yes, I firmly believe fans are too caught up in the 2 big worries. Our issue has been guard play. The one year where we had just 1 top level guard, many of the advanced stats looked way better. Imagine if we had 2 of them.

Thank you and I tend to agree. I don't mind the two big guys but as long as the spacing is good. I'm a 4 out 1 in or 5 out guy so we can take advantage of our mismatches

I think it's been conveyed to IU by Ware and his people that he was leaving for the NBA for a little while now.

During the pre season press conferences both Ware and MM said the plan is to he here one year. Mainly brought this up because that Queen is looking at you stays or goes before he makes his decision

Yes, but he has dropped a little.  In December he was anywhere from 12-24.  If he continues to play the way he has in January, he could slide into the 2nd round.

I can’t figure out why we haven’t offered him yet!  We need a point guard and he’s the best available.  Weren’t we recruiting Curtis Givens and Davis is ranked higher than him

There's a wart somewhere with Davis and after Woody didn't bother to stay for his game last night, pretty clear he's off our radar.
