IMO this article explains much of the horrible officiating. Last year the ACC brought in over $36 mil from the tourney for 5 of their teams playing 18 games in the tourney (UNC and pUKE to the Final Four) On the other hand the B1G also pulls $36 mil due to 9 teams in the tourney with no teams advancing past the Sweet Sixteen.

So lets let B1G teams beat the crap out of each other and stuff the tourney with more teams (since the conference is SOOO deep) rather than fair officiating and the best teams make it deep into the tourney. Bold strategy, but will never result in a championship for a B1G school and the drought will continue.

Weird that the ACC earned $10mil less the year before. I guess they just had a a bad year officiating.

The good news is I found a new way of doing my bracket this year. No longer will I look for the best teams, instead I just look for the conference with the best collective group of officials assigned to it. One year it’s the ACC. Another it’s the PAC12. But it can never be the B1G! We’re losing the officiating gap!

It's a shame, because you really shouldn't have to worry about bringing your kids to games.  I did take my son to Northwestern to see IU play a couple of times -- first time was back when Eric Gordon was a freshman.  It was an enjoyable experience.  Unfortunately, it seems that some fan assholery comes when a team starts to win more.

Yeah we went too during the Crean era.  But I’m a realist as well.   Took him to a Bears v Lions game.  He wanted to wear his Adrian Petersen Vikings jersey.  We had to walk thru the tailgates in the parking lot and he got “abused.”  He Learned a lot about fandom that day.  :)

You should bet on the ACC to win the tournament.  Or Pac12.  Or SEC.  If you are betting on the Big Ten, you aren't paying attention.

It’s just a theory, not a statement of fact, apologies for ruffling your feathers, and the theory is not for bad officiating, it’s more along the lines of the B1G using officiating to control games to influence records to put as many teams in the tourney as possible to earn that $.

Yeah, my son was about eight and got called 'the worst kid ever' by a drunk Purdue fan when I wouldn't let him go under the stands to retrieve something he drunkenly dropped under the seats.  He had already retrieved one item for his group and I told my son not to do it any more.  Didn't find out until after the game when my son told me what he said.

It is a theory that has 20+ years of support in practice, though, as the Big Ten continues to underachieve in the tournament.  Also seems that the Big Ten administration thinks there is something to it since they are looking into it.

I don't know if it's necessarily $ from the tourney. I believe the manufactured parity and massive home court advantage that is achieved through *cough* horrible officiating *cough* is to get fans and stands and eyes on TV sets. It helps to have a massive logjam in the middle and teams "just barely" out of contention while fighting for a chance at a tourney birth.

Ding, ding, ding.  We have a winner.  It is all about getting 9 teams in and the money that comes with it.  Who cares if you win it all when all that sweet cash is flowing in.

The actual sport money that's distributed is that much but from working at UNC and Duke I can tell the amount of money the university receives from donors is enormous. Plus merchandise sales are through the roof. Even property values go up because of many more students wanting to come here (sad part about it in my opinion).

Lol…You just ruined their conspiracy theory with basic simple economic facts.    Intentionally having horrible officials to squeeze out a couple more million in tournament revenue (the causation of which is in doubt) is so ill-conceived, no organization would give it a passing thought.

I hope people are not spreading that conspiracy theory beyond this board into real life. It makes IU fans look like sore losers and, quite frankly, borderline insane.

Which conspiracy theory? That B1G refs and NCAA refs favor home teams for financial purposes for the conference/organization?

Home NW is the taunting little brother throwing rocks while standing behind his big brother (B1G refs).
