How far away is IUBB from being elite again?

Harder to define elite this year. I don't like to compare them strictly to the teams successful in the NCAA's, since it's pretty obvious this season's Final Four sucks. Much like UNC last season, Miami & UConn are solid teams that caught fire at the right time. SDSU?  Nice defensive team that benefited from a wrecked bracket, basically only having to beat Bama and a favorable call against Creighton.  

Outside of TJD, I don't see how we can't upgrade from Kopp, Race, Tamar next year. I don't think our supporting cast was as good as fans thought.  I believed all three of them averaged a combined 22pts a game. Tamar's last 16games he only averaged 3 a game. Neither of those 3 could drive the ball. 

 

So you have Malik, Galloway, and X returning. Per 40min X=15, Galloway = 10 Malik = 10 So you have 35pts there, You need another 40 from Cupps, Sparks, and 1-2 more transfers. Assuming Cupps = 6, Sparks = 10, we have a 24pt hole. Caleb Love averages 17, and so now you need 7-10 points. 

 

If we also adapt offense to look more like Penn States, Miami's etc then I could see production numbers improving

I would be surprised if Cupps and Sparks get anywhere close to those assumptions.

We took another small step up the mountain. Will we sit down and take a rest after positive momentum the last two season or will we take another step?

Elite is consistently competing in the noncon against other top teams, consistently finishing towards the top of your conference while winning every few years, winning your conference tourney, and making it to and past Sweet 16.

We're not in the conversation of being elite. There is too much there that we've never accomplished or haven't accomplished consistently in years/decades. I believe we need big changes to be elite but that's a different conversation.

The absolutely frustrating thing to me as a fan is this isn’t a new revelation. Been this way for eternity. That’s why I stay partially guarded. We talk a good game. Still waiting for actions to match the talk and so far they haven’t.

I think we just need to string together a handful of solid seasons and become a consistently good program first. If we can reliably finish in the top 3rd of the Big Ten and as a <=7 seed each year even during down and bridge seasons, that will do a lot to help the perception of the program. Some decent tourney success would go miles too. 
 

Our best seasons over the past decade have been followed up by absolutely soul crushing disappointments and that can’t happen. We don’t need to be a #1 or #2 seed every year to be on the right path, but we can’t go from being a top team to missing the NIT like under Crean, or let what ever was going on under Archie happen again. 
 

Or maybe we will just start recruiting like 2010 Kentucky every year and become elite over night idk.
