Not bad. I’m pretty critical of this program and I truly believe that this years team, based off of roster construction, is a top 5-8 team.

Woodson and company have high expectations. No reason to AT THE VERY LEAST make the dance.

I’d say a second round game would be at the very least, but I still don’t know who will shoot the basketball.

Absent key injuries a second round game is a very fair floor on expectations.

I also think our roster has us set up well, particularly with JHS's addition, along with Bates' and JG's growth and increased usage, to justify the pre-season rankings and expectations.

I am in a wait and see mode though on the extent to which, or how, Woodson and staff will adjust the offense to use perimeter shooting and wing play. I'm really hoping we see much better use of the outside and wing game to open up the floor, and won't see defensive slug fests with pounding the ball in to TJD as the norm. We have the front court to win 'ugly,' but even with just OK outside shooting we can do a lot better than that, imo.

According to those rankings we are playing numbers 1, 5, 17 and 33 prior to Big Ten.  The schedule will  give us an early look as to how good JHS will be as a freshman and if Bates and/or JG have progressed to the degree we are hoping.

While Xavier is the "least talented" it will be tough because they will be the first road test for this team. Assembly Hall will be fired up for the UNC game. Biggest home game since 2013 Michigan. Brings me back to 2011-2013 when this team had some big games there (2011 UK, 2011 OSU, 2012/2013 Michigan State, 2013 Michigan). Arizona will be a good test. They lost a lot from last year so I don't think they are as talented as the ranking suggests. Kansas too but nobody wins there. I see a 2-2 split which I will take. (Beat UNC and Arizona, lose to Xavier and Kansas).

Good break-down and I agree. Stealing one at Xavier too and my expectations will be completely out of control!

That’s an interesting note — B1G is down some but it will still be a tough conference, IU, Illinois, UM etc will be good

I went and looked up the preseason rankings for the '77-'78 season.  The Big Ten had 3 teams in the Top 20(no Top 25).  Purdue #12, Michigan #13, and Minnesota #16.  None of those three would be in the final poll or make the NCAAT.  The 2 that did make the tournament(only 32 teams) were Michigan St. and Indiana.  MSU finished #4 in the final poll and we finished #13.

I have come to the conclusion that none of what I just posted will affect the '22-'23 season.

IU will likely be underdogs against North Carolina and Kansas. IU-Arizona will be even odds. And, we will be slight favorites against Xavier. It is entirely possible that we will be out of the top 25 by the start of 2023. Or, with a couple of upsets IU could be in the Top Ten.

0-4 on those and we will be out of the top 25.

4-0 and we will be the #1 ranked team.

I have to believe that Parker Stewart was the thorn last year.  If our spot up shooter can't spot up and shoot (and that's the only thing in his bag is to spot up and shoot), then it totally disrupts your offensive flow.  It totally blows my mind that he started nearly every game last year.  Not a slam on the kid, but man, if it doesn't work try something else.

Evidently Woody thought he deserved to start?

IMO we have more athleticism this year and won't have to rely on guys camping on the 3pt line.  I think we will see a beast in X, a rare mature JHS, and a more determined Bates.

Yeah I'm just unclear at this point on what the root cause of our low shooting was. Agree Stewart did not fit last year. On the other hand, Kopp took a really low number of shots, and last time I checked we shot on volume from outside comparable to what we shot under CAM, which goes directly against why we brought in outside shooters in the first place. I'm not meaning to critique Woodson/Staff's offense directly, we used the front court  / TJD well and he's outstanding, but, yeah, why continue to start Stewart if he's having virtually no positive impact, and we can't be a one-dimensional team offensively and expect to run deep, and generally why bring in 3-point shooters to stand around and not shoot? I don't buy that we create spacing by the 'threat' of having them out there, when they barely shoot -- that's easy scouting.

I do think having JHS this season, together with X, is going to make a real difference in how we use the perimeter, and inside-out play. If we don't, I would have a real problem with running a one-dimensional offense this year (but again don't expect it). Related, wing play should be better, though still not deep, I expect Bates is going make a significantly better impact, and with JHS, guys like Galloway and JG (who has already shown he can shoot from deep and I'd bank on seeing better outside shooting from him to go along with attacking the rim) I think are going to vamp up their impact as well.
