2022 NCAA Tournament / Bracket Reveal

But isn't that why they use all these metrics?  It takes the emotion out -- the numbers say what they say. And according to many bracketologists, on here and in the media, IU was solidly in the field and not a first four team after this weekend.  It's obvious to me that they played with the numbers to do what they did.

The committee used the numbers to a degree before the conference tournaments started and a drafted bracket, then they just tweaked it with the teams that made runs but wasn’t in the field, I still think that’s how we were the last 4 in.  We weren’t in the field originally and after beating Michigan and Illinois we got in slot as a last 4. I think they had Illinois and Michigan both seeded exactly where they are and never moved them after their loses to IU.  The committee chair pretty much said it that way, which to me it’s flat out lazy.

I thought all games had equal weight?  If this is the case the conference tourneys are pretty meaningless for the power 6.

Is this some degree the IU fanbase being homers and thinking we are better or deserve better when we do? I’m pissed but wondering if I should be. Our non-conference was super soft and we still tripped up, then were below .500 in conference play.

trying to separate our love from reality

To some degree it is the fanbase being homers, to a larger degree I think it is the clear discrepancies in team selection and seeding. When you have no clear, solid indication what the committee valued in a team's resume and the metrics seemingly applied differently with each team, then you're going to have questions and complaining.

They do have equal weight. It’s just that by Saturday night the committee basically has the field set with contingency brackets and for whatever reason sundays results really don’t have much affect on the final seeding.    Conference Tourneys actually give an unfair advantage to the Power 6 conferences.    It gives these teams extra Q1 games at the end of the year for their resume that other leagues might not have.   Virginia Tech was no where near the bubble at the start of champ week and ended up with huge wins that put them in position to get an at-large bid if they didn’t win their auto-bid.   They were seeded 46 so if they would of lost they would of gotten an at-large.    IU needed the conference tourney to gain 2 extra wins that ultimately took them from being out to getting in.   A&M was no where near the line before their tourney and got hot and gained 3 extra Q1 wins that out them in position to get selected.    Other bubble teams from lesser conferences don’t have this advantage.

This is a good point, and yet conference tournaments lend really valuable neutral court info, so ignoring them to have Duke a 2, Tennessee a 3, and IU a 12, among others things, is just ignoring some valuable info about those teams

I guess I'm still confused by Michigan getting an 11 and Texas A&M just not getting in at all.

It’s because the committee had the bracket done before the major conference tournaments started.  They already had Michigan in as an 11th seed and they weren’t changing it win or lose.  They had Iowa as a 5 seed and after winning the B10 tournament should have moved up to a 4 or 3 seed but didn’t.  IU was one of the bubble teams and was out but only made it in as the last 4 in because of their two wins in the B10 tournament.  They should have moved up to at least an 11 seed, but the committee wasn’t making any changes to the bracket, that’s why the slotted IU, ND & Rutgers where they did.  The committee never took the tournaments into consideration and they were lazy, IMO.  Maybe they only wanted to not spend a lot of time and have more free time, who knows

It was way before Saturday night, the Committee chairman admitted as much

Sounds like pure laziness from the committee with no surprise. People who are only they're because they get a check and probably free food and hotel room.

Not sure about that one.  Hopefully he just misspoke or was misunderstood.    Last I saw was they were through scrubbing the 8 line late Saturday and thought they would have the rest by the end of the night.   They came from the chairman and from David Worlock.   Wednesday is the first day the vote on teams and Saturday night is the time when they complete the bracket and seed the teams.  They said they had 8 contingency brackets for Sunday’s result.  Not sure about that last one though

he didn't misspeak though. he looked taken off guard, and basically admitted what IUFAN1976 said.

Just some numbers....

Since the addition of the First Four games, only two teams have reached the Final Four. VCU as an 11 seed in 2011, the first tournament with an expanded field. Then again last year, in 2021, UCLA as an 11 seed seed reached the Final Four.

First Four winners are a combined 18-20 once in the field of 64. Power Conference teams(ACC, Big Ten, Big 12, Big East, SEC, Pac12) are 9-10 and non power conference teams are also 9-10. Among the 20 teams, there have been 11 first round exits, 3 second round exits, 3 S16 exits and 2 Final Four exits. Among Power Conference teams there have been 6 1st round exits, 2 S16 exits and a Final Four exit.

So we will see where Indiana adds to the list WHEN we win tomorrow night.

You got it ace!!! There didn’t seem to be a lot of thought process involved after last Monday, IMO

These committee members should not ever be allowed back, IMO.  The last several days and the weekend leading up to selection Sunday should have been the most involved and intensive, but the brackets were pretty much set Monday.

Is there some reason Mike DeCourcy likes Purdue so much? He has them in the Final Four, which I guess isn't crazy, but he had them going last year as well. Says their offense has gotten better lately, when in fact, it's actually gotten worse over the last month. Also thinks Purdue got a great region, when I have yet to hear a single Purdue fan think it's a favorable draw.

Purdue might be lucky to get through the weekend

They have the advantage of having a much easier time winning an auto-berth tho. They’ll play 2-3 games in which they are heavily favored and then a championship game with pretty close to 50/50 odds (if they were a true bubble team, ie ranked about ~40 in kenpom).

IU played 3 straight, and would’ve been 4, where they were small to decent underdogs. Very tough for us to do anything but rack up a few good wins.
