Five Prime

2022-2023 IUBB Roster Projection

We are getting three newcomers and we are actively recruiting Sparks. Therefore it seems without question that we expect to lose at least four.

That's not surprising to me. I think five total would be the most likely prediction. Six or four would be the next most likely outcomes.

I'm starting to think that Lander, Duncomb, TJD, Stewart, Kopp, and either Rob or X are doing something else next year

Literally? No; that would leave Race still in.

And, a starting five of Race, Jordan, Tamar, Trey and JHS is pretty strong. That's not including a returning guard or a high-level portal player like Sparks.

Our cultural establishment is well underway. Our use of players that can guard at least three positions is coming to fruition. Our talent level will be high, and is only getting better.

Yes I think we get X or Rob back which both are considered starters or JHS starting from day 1

TJD or Race back which are starters

Trey has started

Then add a transfer guy who was a starter Sparks, Pack, or someone like that.

I also think JG starts from day 1 next year.

Why wouldn't you include Kopp here? By all accounts he's a gym rat. He was also probably the most vocal player on the team. I don't think he's a Big Ten level starter, but not sure what else you want from him as a teammate.

My biggest gripe with Kopp this season has been shot selection. That's probably a wider issue than just Kopp. Where are his spots? You expect it from a Bates or to a lesser degree Geronimo but, as a senior, Kopp should know where he needs to get to for the highest percentage shot. He took too many bad shots, especially from deep two and baseline floaters for my liking. (I believe the percentages would probably back this up)

It definitely could be argued whether he was a Big 1.o level starter or if he should be starting alongside P Stew.

I'm sure some think it's being nit picky. I get it. All of these little issues that don't seem like that big of a deal on their own add up. Who cares if Kopp takes a few bad shots a game? It's just a small percentage of overall shots. These all add up and effect the chances to win games. We were in quite a few games that could have gone either way. These decisions and shots matter. The more right plays you make, the more best shots you take the more you increase you chance to win games.

That's just silly and you know it. There is ZERO chance that Jordan G is starting at the 5 and that Miller Kopp will start next year at the 4.

Who is going to start then. assuming TJD and Race leave?

Small ball! Do we switch 1-5?

I have high hopes for Geronimo and Gallo but both will need to put in a great off-season to really impact winning as primary options (starters) next season.

Small ball, less standing and maybe by a miracle these boys will learn to shoot.

We will not have a seven or eight player roster.

Speculating on who starts?

  • Sure

Speculating on who starts among the seven or eight players you project returning, none of which are over 6'6"?

  • Folly

Well yeah, I'm just assuming our portal transfers are bleh. Maybe we land a fish, but I really like the idea of Johnson, Hood, Trey, Kopp, and Jordan.

Small ball, more NBA friendly assuming we learn how to shoot this off-season. Experienced players as well minus Hood. I suppose Bates could start for Hood but I don't know if Bates comes back.

I agree with others that it's hard to see Lander waiting around another year to get a shot. He is a poster child for not enrolling early. I like his potential but expect it to benefit someone else.

I really don't understand people blaming early enrollment for Lander being unable to produce this past season. Do you really think he'd have developed more and been more productive this past year if he had spent another season in HS? I don't. At all. It's more like he is a poster child for not taking the rankings as gospel.

I think both can be true. I think 100% the rankings got it wrong for him and it hurt him in the long run. But I also think he should have stayed in HS for another year. Big guys leave high school early because there is no one to match up against in practice. They get to practice against guys their size every day in practice in college. It's not the same for guards, I just think playing in close games his senior year would have helped him develop than sitting on the bench in games and not getting the same practice as others in college.

Ideally Woody's four is someone with great perimeter skills -- someone who can shoot from distance and create off the dribble. Race proved throughout the year that he can't do either of those.

Count me as someone who thinks Race has the ability to do both of these and could actually be the ideal 4 or 5 in Woody's system. Keep in mind Race shot about 42% from 3 in the final 3rd of the season. He was our best 3 point shooter percentage-wise during that stretch. Not high volume, but it's also not cherry-picking his best shooting games. It was a sustained stretch of games where he significantly improved his outside shooting. It's not certain, but what could another summer with this staff fully in place where he's working on his shot (knowing the staff has confidence in him shooting from distance, something I'm not sure the previous staff did at all) and working on creating off the dribble do for him? A JG/Race combo at the 4/5 could be very hard to guard.

Trish said  "I suppose Bates could start for Hood but I don't know if Bates comes back."

Bates already tweeted that he is coming back. If Trey Galloway doesn't develop a reliable 3-point shot, IU is in trouble if he starts assuming TJD is no longer around to score 18 points a game.  Small ball requires that every player be able to shoot and Galloway has yet to demonstrated he can shoot from outside.

Portal becomes tricky.  Do you take guys early and miss out on the next round of portal guys late in the year or do you take the first one in that puts up decent numbers.    Is It worth bringing in a guy like Sparks in if it pushes a young top 100 player out like Duncomb.   Probably an either or situation.   Jordan G was on a hysterics podcast today and wasn’t a slam dunk he is coming back.   I still think he does come back but it was a definite.   I’ve got a feeling the roster projections today will be completely different then the actual lineup next year.    Portal is a wildcard

Why would JG consider transferring?  That would shock me actually.  And I'd be pretty bummed, love that guy.

Geronimo also tweeted out that he is coming back but today in a podcast said that is not set in stone. Bates's dad tweeted out that Tamar was coming back, not Tamar. He just had a baby a few days ago so a lot is up in the air for him too. But I do think they both come back but they will meet with Coach Woodson this week to discuss.

What a wild time to be in, where a promising Sophomore with no current pro prospects is just like "eh, we'll see" when asked if he's coming back on a podcast lol. Just 5 years ago people would be Losing. Their. Minds. and today it's kind of surprising, but mostly business as usual.

I agree. I am expecting some surprises with guys currently on the roster. Dont agree with those saying Sparks needs to be able to shoot the 3. We need rim protection & defensive rebounding. Would be ideal for our 5 man to be able to hit a mid range jumper at a decent clip too. We need an upgrade at the 4 position too. I love Race but I think Woody's system would benefit with a better perimeter shooter.

I don't think IU has the luxury to wait for the 2nd wave of transfers. We aren't that type of program. IMHO, if we have the opportunity to upgrade the roster/each position, we need to act immediately.

Of course we need to see where the current players end up but I'm not sure waiting would be in their best interests.
