A player that constantly pushes the envelop, going forward, looking to make plays is naturally going to have more turnovers than a player that makes lateral and negative dribbles and passes. X makes some things happen but Galloway is always looking to break down the defense off the pass, dribble and screens/cutting off the ball. Phin, not so much. I would rather play a guy that is going to push the pace, score and set up teammates and have 3 turnovers than a guy that holds onto the ball for 20 seconds, dribbling laterally, lulling his own teammates into paralysis and ending with 2 turnovers You can’t spin 30 verses 19 to make it look like a good decision. You just can’t. 30 is not a tenable rate. Love Galloway. I’m one of his biggest supporters. But he’s not a point guard. HoosierHoopster 1 Quote

Teams that close with confidence, vs. teams that dominate the first half and then look like the deer in the headlights down the stretch (sound familiar?). Shooters that shoot with confidence are going to start hitting even when they start out poorly, and CAM reigned in players and limited their offense. I don't know to what extent Rob was affected by his concussions (clearly set him back) or by struggling with confidence, but it's there. Archie yelled at Rob every game to play faster but Rob continued to walk the ball up the court. Blaming the previous coach for all the team’s problems is the easy thing to do because it offers hope that things will be different under a new coach. Some of our problems weren’t Archie but rather the players themselves. A player regaining his confidence is what you say when a shooter is in a slump. Phinisee has never been a shooter at IU. Through 100 college games, he’s shooting 35.2% from the field, 29% from 3, and 65.7% from the free throw line. This year he’s shooting career lows from the field, from 2, and from the free throw line. His 27% from 3 is the second lowest of his career. His assist to turnover ratio is the lowest of his career. There’s nothing to suggest that he’s suffering from any kind of ‘confidence’ issue caused by the previous coaching staff. Archie is gone and has been gone since March 2021, but Rob is having the worst season of his career. MikeRoberts, BGleas and HoosierAloha 3 Quote

What’s crazy is that he’s shooting 23% from 3 in conference play despite going 4-9 against Minnesota. In the other 6 conference games he’s 2-17. His game has aged like Benjamin Button. He was at his best the first month of his freshman year and he’s at his worst as a senior. It’s truly bizarre. You might see that from a guy who has several devastating injuries, but Rob hasn’t suffered any of those. He’s had a few minor injuries, but he’s played in 90% of IU’s games during his career. While I yearn for Phin to play his best ever, I just do not see it. Hitting a bunch of 3's in one game and not turning over the ball is really good. Certainly if it is matched with moving the ball quickly and getting steps on his defender. But that only happened once recently. His two concussions and hurt ankle and maybe hurt leg are not minor injuries. They essentially ended his and IU's season a couple of years ago. He has never really recovered fully after them. Seems lots of posters blame Archie Miller. Well Archie did seem to encourage the taking the air out of the ball at the top of the key possession after possession. And the messed up lineup didn't help Phin progress either. No ball movement drove all of us crazy. I just hope that X stays in the game and plays within himself. And Phin is an asset. I will believe all that when I see it. But Phin seems the least negative in his position on this team than others that are on the bench. Hopefully that will change somehow before the season ends. I mean soon. Like today, perhaps. Quote

Michael Penix is a player whose career was upended by injuries. 4 season ending injuries in 4 seasons. Maurice Creek is another player whose college career was upended by injuries. Fractured kneecap in one leg, stress fracture in the patella of his other knee, torn Achilles. Those are players who physically just couldn’t do what they used to do anymore because of injuries. Phinisee has suffered a few minor injuries. Did you disagree about a concussion being a minor injury, ok, I understand that. But it’s not like a concussion or an ankle injury only affects you on one end. He doesn’t have injuries that affect him when IU has the basketball but go away completely when the other team has the ball. If anything, a concussion would make you more hesitant on defense because defense is all about aggression and physicality. But it hasn’t. He’s just fine physically and nothing has kept him from being a very good offensive player. So, I don’t buy the injury excuse for his poor offense. Quote

And I don't understand why you would pull him away at something he HAS been doing effectively -- coming in for Kopp an Stewart -- to play him out of position. X makes some bad decisions but he is a point guard. Take a look at the number of players at IU in the last fifteen years who averaged more than the 4.2 assists he is putting up this year. He thinks he should be the #2 scorer on this team and in certain periods of the game he thinks it is time for him to takeover and get his points. If he would just play within himself, focus more on getting others involved, getting assists, and hitting an occasional bucket when open, I would be thrilled to death but the dude thinks he is there to showcase his talent in order to get to the NBA. He thinks he is better than what he is and that is most of our issues with him. Be a team first player, that is all we ask! Quote

I hear you on that but I think he's actually been better about that as of late. The two games that stood out in terms of him trying to overexert himself were Wisky and Notre Dame. In terms of the Notre Dame game, I didn't like him putting up 9 threes, but they were open looks and statistically guys that are 33% three point shooters are typically going to hit better than that getting open looks. If he were just trying to showcase his talent for the NBA, he certainly wouldn't have transferred from Pittsburgh to Indiana. At Pitt he was putting up 10 1/2 shots per game for three years and over three threes per game; here he's putting up 7 and 2. I really wouldn't call a kid getting 4 assists and 7 shots per game selfish, just a player who sometimes tries to do too much. Honestly, I'd prefer there was a little more of X in Parker Stewart as Stewart sometimes passes up shots and hasn't really been one step in and get a shot either.
