General Coach Candidate News

I know it's hard for folks to grasp because we've been so used to the disappointment of the football program but IUFB finally has a coach that knows what he's doing.

What a horrible take. Lol.

I’m a basketball fan , don’t claim to know “ball”

not the case when it comes to football . Agreed it’s a terrible take . The amount of talent that returns off last years roster is almost unheard of in todays college football . Not to mention the additions (arguably better QB, RB , and couple of OL) and the retention of staff as well .

9-3 minimum

Taking those points in a vacuum is nuts lol.

with football there was only upside. worst power 5 program ever. Little expectations. so  60 year old coming in works to give the program any relevance ever

basketball the expectations are so high. Mcdermott is a good coach but this program cant have another coaching search in 4-5 years again.

Why..  why would it?

What vacuum was I speaking in?

You all worry about the most trivial s***

I wouldn't pigeonhole his "system" into a label of a D2 style system. His approach seems to be more about his players' strengths and adapt to them. He's definitely a process driven coach, like Nick Saban for sure.  It looks like his biggest constant is the point guard play. It all starts and stops with the PG. I think I read on here somewhere or maybe watched an interview or something where he wants a player that can quickly process things mentally. His offense makes me think of the "motion" offense back in the day.  It's very fluid and not really about X's and O's but more about mentally processing what is available on the court that the defense is giving you. A lot of cuts to the basket, screens that help setting up open shots through mismatches, screens to get two defenders on the ball, ghost screens,  etc.. I watched it in the flesh, and it's really fun to watch. Personally, I enjoyed his team's defense more than I did the offense. Bottom line, they played smart.  I haven't seen an IUBB team play smart in a very long time.  I do question whether or not his type of philosophy/offense will work against length. We'll be able to watch this in the tournament for sure.

If McCollum is the guy, I'll be extremely comfortable with the hire.

Yeah, I understand.  But sometimes you have to let Cheney, Olidipo, etc, do what they do.

He was praising “Trayce” Galloway the other day. I will not miss his aloofness. You just can’t lack basic attention to detail as a head coach. I know for a fact it cost us more than one top-level recruit.

Also I won’t miss him speaking in the third person. What the hell was that anyway?? How did he never take any heat for that? lmao

My personal favorite was calling Carlyle “Canine”

IU basketball is in basically the same place as IU football after Allen. Day 0. We have NIL going for us which is nice but that’s not enough to make us elite. It’s just a perk of the job. The history here is something we should always respect. That said, the program needs to be gutted and rebuilt in a true winner’s image.

Because he would retire? I know the things i say aren't the most complicated but you all make it seem like rocket science. You are taking coaches ages in a vacuum acting like the basketball program and football program are in the same status. Iu football was never relevant. Basketball used to be and needs to get back. having a coach retire in another 4-5 years would be terrible.

Why would he retire? Idc what status they're in. It's sport. Good coaches win.

You're talking in myth.

Ok, so today's topic is McDermott as IU's coach.

Got it.

Haha I'm just confused what we're looking for if we're too good for McDermott. Of course, some had convinced themselves we were too good for Drew.

Pitino is 72 and has another 2-4 years easy. McDermott could give us 12 great years. We don’t know what the guys motor is like.

There are some IU fans who only root for the basketball program and have enjoyed taking pot shots at the football program over the years. That got ripped away from them this past year and they've not handled it very well.

I call those people nerds, Cignetti would too.

Guys - my sources are telling me that it’s McDermott. Not a joke. Not a troll. You heard it here first. I joked about his son earlier. This is not a drill

So you joked about McDermott earlier (saying it was going to be his son), but now you claim that it's going to be the pop?

Color me sceptical...LOL

However, the betters have been on McDermott from the start, so I guess I shouldn't brush this idea off at all.
