NCAA MBB Transfer Portal

Generally speaking a university requires some number or percentage of credit hours to be completed at said institution to graduate AND/OR the final X hours to be there. Would be hard to do both in just a single year if you weren’t strategic.

It may be possible to get a waiver for one or both of those rules depending on institutional/departmental policy and/or state law. Could imagine a vindictive program trying not to allow that but it’s a decision for academic staff/faculty, not the athletic dept./program.

All of which might explain taking summer classes at your old school (as would simple scheduling/housing needs, online options, or finding it easier to transfer credit out of UK than in, etc.).

Illinois State doesn’t list a summer graduation date, which probably just means they don’t have a ceremony; I’m sure any institution of that size does award degrees in summer. But I assume that means Reeves wouldn’t graduate and thus be eligible to start somewhere new as a grad transfer, until mid-August.

Yep.  I know a lot of schools have two different summer sessions where you can get a course done in a five week or so period taking the course for quite a few hours each week, but according to Illinois State's website they have a single summer session which ends on August 9th and grades aren't posted until the next week.

If he's taking classes at Illinois State, he has to be paying for them since his scholarship is at UK......I can't envision a scenario where he would be taking courses at Illinois State without the intent of being a grade transfer.  And although he can't enter the portal until then, there is no doubt that by then both he and the school he would be transferring to would already know it.

Indiana has someone very connected with Reeves and has a big advantage communicating through back channels. Reeves will absolutely be transferring but it may be a bit before he announces a decision as to where. My understanding is that he is making sure academics are taken care of to make sure he can graduated and then transfer as a grad transfer. We have a current player along with someone connected with Reeves that has been in communication and been FaceTiming with him and can say we will very much have a real chance here. It sounds like Woody and Juwan may be squaring up in the ring on this one.

Dang—he’s exactly what we are lacking. A perfect fit.

Woody the closer? Bring it on.

Hart will be the local kid that rarely if ever sees the court.

Wilcher will be the fairly high rated recruit who may be buried and get frustrated.

Reeves would likely start and will be one of the country’s best catch and shoot guards.

I agree on Hart and Reeves 100%

RE: Wilcher, I agree 90%

I think he is so talented, he would not get "buried" put IMO likely carve out a 20 min/game role that plays to his strengths (driving/scoring, playmaking). He wants to show he can be a PG and shoot the 3 reliably, but hasn't shown that ability consistently (why he dropped from top 10 to top 40). Don't think he'd be a one and done here at all, maybe on a 2 year plan (or he's a transfer risk). Not sure how realistic he is being with himself about time he will need in school and not sure how much of a factor that will ultimately be in his re-recruitment.

I don't love the fit/make-up class wise of Galloway/Wilcher/Gunn/Newton + Cupps at the 1. It just seems like that wouldn't work out for everyone.

That said, give me all the talent we can get. I will be happy (to varying degrees) with any of these three to round out the roster.

If we get Wilcher, between him, Newton, and Gunn, someone’s gonna be frustrated.

I think even with Reeves, who I’m really hoping for, someone will be upset of Galloway, Newton, Cupps, Gunn.

I’d see Galloway sliding over taking more minutes at the 1. Getting some minutes at the 2. Cupps would be more of a third string alternative option at PG. Then Newton /Gunn trying to earn back up minutes at the 2. Maybe back up minutes At the 3 which would come at Banks expense.

We Will definitely lose X, Walker, (Leal). Likely lose Mgbako, Ware, then (Reeves). 5 spots to recruit for. Then likely approximately 1-2 transfers in the scenario I’m looking at.

Am I getting ahead of myself……. Lol.

Somebody correct me if I'm wrong because I can't find the video, but I remember Newton's commitment to IU where he said he believed he had the opportunity to start at IU.  I worry about that mindset

A healthy Jakai Newton has the opportunity to start at Indiana immediately. That doesn’t mean he would, but it absolutely means that the opportunity will exist. When healthy I believe he can be that good.

Without question.

Jakai isn’t rated higher because of his injury. He’s got elite athleticism and has an extremely high ceiling.

What I'm saying is, if Newton doesn't get the minutes, he's the one I expect to be grumpy

If that scenario plays out combined with who the program is in on in ‘24 and ‘25, Gunn will have already been effectively recruited over. Actually, even if neither Witcher nor Reeves come he already has been because Newton’s just better. I’ll be pretty surprised if he’s not in the portal in April.

I was surprised he wasn’t in this year.  Competition will make them better, how much better is up to Gunn!  I for one don’t think CMW will add anyone else this year because he thinks he’s got a decent core with Galloway, Gunn and Newton.  I will be surprised if they do add someone, but I’ve been wrong before and could be again.  Also, there maybe a scenario where he may decide to play Cupps at the 2.
