Game Thread: Indiana Hoosiers @ Iowa Hawkeyes (9 p.m. EST on FS1)

Recommended Posts

Woke up this morning in a GREAT mood!

- Our defensive game plan & execution was GREAT! We got back to our principals and played with more energy on defense than most games recently. Great TO's in the first half by Archie after our freshman + hunter failed to properly execute the ball screen / hand off defense.

- It's amazing what happens when you make a 3! We tore the Zone up! Yes IOWA can't guard a loaf of wheat bread in their zone and man to man defense, but I have to give credit for our players for finishing the plays, the coaches having a great plan of getting the ball in the middle and great use of ball screens on that zone that led to some great dump passes / reads.

- We're not magically going to get better at FT's. Let's take it for what it is, we stink at them. Be prepared for that to not change anytime soon.

- Welcome to Indiana Basketball, Rob! We all know he's been slightly (more than slightly) disappointing his first couple years here. He's been clicking the past month. Was the benching a great move by Archie early in the season? I think so.

- Anthony Leal can play and so can that other fella, Jordan Geronimo! Defensively they are better than MOST freshman. Even Kristian came in that second half and took care of the basketball. Kristian didn't force anything against that zone in the second, that could be a small, but important building block going forward for him.

- WE FINISHED A GAME! We showed up for 40 minutes. We held the best team in the conference and one of the best in the country to a scoring drought of 12+ minutes. Credit to the coaching staff and players!

- Lastly, we play SIGNIFICANTLY better on the road. We play like complete **** in Assembly Hall. I welcome the notion we skip Assembly Hall the remaining year.

HOOSIERS!

What a freaking win, wow. So much for moral victories when you can just win by double digits on the road against #4.

Amazing how much better this team is when the open 3’s fall. Classic IU too to come off a beat down at home to the Boilers and then pull this. Impossible to predict the way the rest of the season goes but hopefully more of this.

Let me add to the joy:

As disastrous as Kentucky has been, this afternoon they started a thread that would provide them some happiness at our expense.

Tonight, that thread did not age well:

https://kentucky.forums.rivals.com/threads/whose-looking-forward-to-iu-getting-waxed-tonight-by-iowa.336936/

How it starts -- Hey, let's all watch IU get crushed tonight. Iowa's good. They're gonna kill 'em. This is gonna be fun.

How it ends -- Iowa wasn't really all that good anyway.

So typical -- love it!

What a great win!!! Hopefully, this team is coming together at the right time. Let get things rolling. Can you imagine next year when we add Henry or Brooks, how good we can be?

C'mon Chris you can't just drop this bomb in a game thread after a win like that and run off!! Don't play with our hearts!!

Maybe. We will be adding players for next year. Who that will be is still yet to be determined. But I have heard both those names and others

I gotta say--been watching Keion Brooks play, and while I know he's had a crap year, I would LOVE to see him in an IU uniform. He has become a true college four with length, strength and athleticism. He is also the adult in that room of Kentucky freshman misfits.

Adding Brooks would be absolutely amazing. Gotta think it would make TJD think twice about leaving

With that said, I am NOT getting my hopes up for either of those things.

I'm normally not a fan of the transfer market approach or just assuming that the perfect transfer that fills all our needs will be there for us in the spring, but this year might be the one exception.  It's crazy to think about how many names will be floating in and out of the portal here in a few months.

An amazing progression:

  • With 12:00 left to play last night, we were down nine.
  • We went on a 37-16 run for the rest of the game.
  • For the first seven minutes of that 12 minute run, we played with Jordan Geronimo at the five and Jerome Hunter at the four.

Pretty great stuff

If you would have asked anyone before the game which team would go on an 11 minute field goal drought pretty sure nobody would have said Iowa. I still can't believe that actually happened

Hunter is definitely a 4 for us.  I actually really like our group of 4s.  Which gives us flexibility with the 5. Not sure Brooks would have a role with us Sadly.  Unless we move Race to the 5 permanently

We got 43 points last night out of our starting guards. That’s what we have to find a way to continue. Depth wise I like what we have but wouldn’t mind Al sticking around.

Also funny how similar this game was to last year. IU was coming off a 12-point home loss to Purdue and the sky had fallen (same as this year). Game starts and CJ Fredrick went down with a lower leg injury in the first half (same as this year) and the non garza Hawkeyes look terrible after he goes out (same as this year). IU sells out on shutting out the three point line and lets Garza go 1-1. IU won by 12 (same as this year).

Go Hoosiers

I wasn't all that terribly surprised when we were down 9 and clawed our way back in. But after that, I was waiting for the inevitable drought -- and figured Iowa would just pull away and win by 14-15. But that drought didn't happen. And it did surprise me -- very pleasantly.

I've also seen speculation that Deonta Allen isn't happy either at Kentucky. He is a good shooter
