Well, Galloway has played 21 minutes per game over the three games and Lander has played 13.  I'm not sure how much more you are going to see Galloway play than that.

IMO, Lander's going to have to play minutes.  Only way he improves and it's not like we have any natural point guard after Rob.

Lander will have to play simply because we don't have our usual freshman training camp (cupcake games). It's not going to be pretty for the freshman with the B1G coming up. But they need valuable exposure.

I’m not really that worried about the season yet. I agree with the guy who said Archie assembled a flawed roster for the style of play he implemented. (Waynefleek?) But, I also think the known deficiency in perimeter shooting can be improved if the right people start taking them. Today IU attempted just 10. That’s fine. Limiting attempts is what I’ve said needs to happen if it’s a weakness. Problem comes when 8 of the 10 come from unproven or historically bad shooters. Lander, Galloway, Thompson, Franklin. 1 for 8. In the case of the young guys, I want those guys to go through the process, get position and take a good shot. I want them to get experience and find the range in these early games, but within reason. A 3 point attempt is a turnover for this team right now so it has to be a solid open look.
I like this group of guys. For the first time in many years I can honestly say I absolutely adore every player. It’s so nice not secretly waiting on a certain player to graduate. I think they will be fine. Might have some bumps early on but I feel the season will be looked upon favorably. Defense is where it’s at. Anyway, shooting isn’t the big problem, it’s rebounding and size. TJD can be bullied. Brunk might help.

I didn't really expect Lander to just come in and light it up since he should still be a senior in HS.  It's a big jump to college, especially for a HS junior.

Agreed.  I don't see fear in his eyes; just a lack of adjustment.  He needs to turn the volume up a little.

I'd say that's our biggest problem. Our guys look deathly afraid to shoot the basketball unless it's a layup. How many wide open shot are consistently passed up? You gotta let it fly.

Completely agree!  To me, ^^this is an important post.^^ We are a pretty darn good defensive team. No 'buts'--end of defensive discussion--the system works.

On offense I kinda like the new system and was commenting during yesterday's game that we are getting, but constantly pass up reasonable looks. Yes, some of them will look like we launched too early in the shot clock, but there's an upside to shooting earlier in the possession, even if it results in the occasional 'groaner':

1. An early look may be before the defense is set and can allow for more second chance looks
2. It picks up the pace of the game--we are a three guard team with a five that is great in transition--let's run! and
3. Most importantly, it generally instills a more aggressive mindset for each and every player. Passing up reasonable shots too often can make for a tight shooter when that player is open and actually pulls the trigger. 

I'm not talking about this adjusted mindset when we're up 10 with four minutes left, but I have noticed that some of our guys chronically pass up shots that I wish they'd take--Rob Phinissee (by far the most often), Trayce, Jerome, and Race from 12-18 feet.

If you watch yesterday's game, watch how players attack off the screen in a pick and roll. Especially Phinisee and Durham who handle the ball the most. Neither attack looking to get to the rim or put pressure on the defense. They look to make the next pass to keep running the offense. I'd watch it today too. Lander seems to be the only guard that consistently looks forward at the rim coming of screens.

Galloway is the one player that actually does it consistently.  Franklin started doing it late in the game vs. Texas but wasn't finishing.  Has Lander really looked to attack the rim in the three games?  He's had several shot attempts that were unnecessary but it seems like he's trying to find his rhythm.

Not really. He's had a few times when he's gotten the ball in the corner, head-faked, and drove baseline (YAY for that!)

But attacked into the lane? Nope. Al and Armaan have been the only two that have done that, and only Al with success.

This all day. It was more frustrating than them bricking shots. At least give yourself a freaking chance. I thought Armaan attacked as needed even missing open shots, but Rob was very frustrating to me as he was not aggressive one bit.

I don't really blame him as I believe yesterday he would have been absolutely crushed.  I just love the way Galloway sees the angles and attacks when it's to his advantage.  If we had Durham, Phin, Franklin, and others doing the same we'd breakdown defenses a lot easier.  Texas was guarding out past the arc (I don't know why) and we could have easily beat them on backcuts (see Davidson).  We played dumb with a dumb game plan.
