We don't need him to score though.  If he can hit an open shot to prevent defenses from sagging too much, that is really all we need from him on offense.

In one of the Illinois games he must have hit four jumpers and looked confident doing it.  If he can get to that level a little more consistently, that is what we need.  And honestly I think he's capable of it...just needs a bit more confidence this year.

But his defense and intangibles are actually of even greater value with the talent around him because his offense really isn't needed.

Comments coming out of Archie's show tonight from various tweeters.

Miller says Morgan is as strong as he’s ever been. Says the freshman class has come in “genetically pretty good.”

Says the length showed up in the closed scrimmage this weekend.

Miller: “I hope we’re a great practice team.”

Miller talking about the scrimmage against Loyola (Ill.) at Bankers Life. “We got our money’s worth. We had to guard an extremely skilled team.”

Said on defense “Loyola did things we’ve never seen before.” But said he really liked the defensive intensity. “We held a really good offensive team to a reallly poor day.”

In Sunday's scrimmage with Loyola Chicago, Archie Miller says he was pleasantly surprised by the effort level shown by players this early in the year. #iubb

Miller: "Offensively, we're not there yet. ... We have a long way to go in terms of chemistry on offense."

Said Loyola scored 48 points. “Our athleticism was better than theirs.”.

Indiana coach Archie Miller said the staff was "really surprised" at IU's defense in Sunday's scrimmage against Loyola-Chicago.

Devonte Green and Race Thompson did not play in the Loyola-Chicago scrimmage. Indiana may be without both guys for a little while. 

Said Race Thompson was not available due to “some nagging injuries.”

Said they have to get a lot better at half court execution.

Miller: “From a defensive perspective, we have to have some guys that can really play.”

De'Ron Davis is now able to play 5-on-5, per Archie Miller. Davis played about 10 minutes total in the Loyola scrimmage.

De'Ron Davis was given full clearance to practice 5-on-5 beginning last week.

Miller: “I don’t think this year’s team will aspire to shoot a lot of threes. I think it’s a team that wants to get fouled.”

Miller said he thinks there’s a lot of things he can do with lineups and a lot of different ways this team can play.

On Inside IU Basketball, Archie Miller voices excitement over IU's defensive capabilities for this season - confirms that we held Loyola Chicago to 48 points, low shooting %, and had 11 steals.

Indiana center De’Ron Davis, coming back from Achillies surgery, played around 10 minutes in Sunday’s scrimmage, Archie Miller said. #iubb Expect short bursts of court time from him to start the season.

Miller asked what surprised him in his first year in the league. Said he thought Penn State and Nebraska deserved more credit. Said he thinks this league will be very even.

Miller: “We need every team in the Big Ten to win until we get to Big Ten play.”

Excited that De'Ron Davis got cleared for contact and was able to play 10 minutes.  Still not expecting much from him until probably B1G play, but that's a good sign.

Hopefully Devonte isn't out for too long.  I'd rather we're able to ease Phinisee into the starting lineup rather than force him by necessity.

They just said it would be on again next Monday night. I’m not sure if it will always be on mondays throughout the season.

Evan Fitzner was the guest player on tonight's show and yes, Dustin Dopirak called him Fitzgerald.

Fitzner said St. Mary’s used most of the same principles as IU on defense, but played more half court offense. Said going uptempo has been an adjustment.

I've said it before and I'll say it again, I think this team's PG for the long haul is going to be Rob. From what I've heard he handled the role great. We don't need a playmaker at PG with this team, just someone who has a high bball IQ and makes good decisions, and that is RP. We'll be just fine without Green but hope he gets back sooner than later to provide us with depth at the 1 position.

I hope so too! Kind of reminds me of Yogi in 2012 but I don't think Rob is as talented. I also think Rob may be one of the more under valued recruits in the nation. We shall see!

I think he would be the odds on favorite. I don't think you can go wrong with either but once Rob gets going I think he is the PG of the future. There is a reason a lot of the 2019 guards stayed away and he is part of it. I do like Devonte but he is on a short leash I think. If he really struggles early on I think Archie will do to Al or Rob. Gotta love the competition!
