Brass Cannon Posted May 30, 2018 Author Posted May 30, 2018 Well its official i think we all agree have 2 players guaranteed to start. PG - Green/Phinisee SG - Langford SF - McRoberts/Smith/Hunter PF - Morgan C - Davis/Thompson/Fitzner I know i am in the minority here but i really would start Mcroberts or Fitz they compliment Morgan and Romeo alot and they allow more talented players to come off the bench. Im also pretty sure Green will start. Quote

He has a good stroke and that would create more space for Morgan or a big to work down low. ebridges24 1 Quote
HoosierDYT Posted May 31, 2018 Posted May 31, 2018 Based on Archie's "positionless" basketball ideology and recent trends of small-ball, I think we could start Green, Langford, Hunter, Smith, Morgan. What we lose in height we gain in speed, possibly. akinnaird24, HoosierX and Stromboli 3 Quote

Old Friend Posted May 31, 2018 Posted May 31, 2018 1) All due respect to Brass Cannon, if we have to start McRoberts in any circumstance, I think we're in trouble. He is not at all a threat to score, and we don't need that liability on the floor with starters' minutes this season. Love him as a role player off the bench, but he should not be listed anywhere as a starter. He is still a walk on, after all 2) I may die on this hill, but I'm remaining firmly in the "Phinisee should start from day 1" camp. I may also be alone in that tent, but he is a pure point guard and I truly believe at least as good as Yogi was at this age. Quicker and not as strong, so not really comparable; but he's terrific. Green to me is a combo guard and still makes too many mistakes to start with a team this talented. 3) I would love at some point to see Smith get a shot at the "3." He should be the guy on a rim run on every fast break. 4) Don't be surprised to see Race Thompson in the mix in the front court. I haven't heard much (I also haven't asked), but what I DO hear is that he's a strong SOB and tough to move around in the paint. 5) I am also of the belief that Davis will contribute more this season than many think he will. Maybe Fitzner can fill the "5" role until he's ready or can play big minutes, but I know plenty of people who have come back to 100% from an achilles tear in less than 9 months. If I were making decisions, I'd start : Phinisee, Langford, Smith, Morgan, and Davis/Thompson/Fitzner. Maybe Archie will ask for my input? thebigweave and Ohreally 1 1 Quote

No offense but if you think Mcroberts is just a walk on after all then im just going to not read the rest of the post. About 180 scholarship basketball players in the Big Ten last year. Mcroberts probably easily outplayed 60 of them. And you dont always play your 5 besr players or do you think the Pacers orgabozation thought that Jeff Foster was better than Al Harrington. Quote

Regardless of how you spin it....that's what he is. How he plays or the role he plays is irrelevant. He is a walk on. You don't start walk on's who can't score if you're competing for a Big Ten title. I don't care if you read the rest of the post or not...but you did. I am completely aware of how you build a team and what you put on the floor...I've only coached for 21 years. Any player in the NBA who starts is an expert at something. Foster was one of the best post defenders and rebounders in the eastern conference. He was also a 5. Harrington was a 3-4, so I'm not sure what point you're trying to make with that comparison, but for all McRoberts is; find me a Big Ten champ who consistently started a walk on who can't score. I said I like him off the bench, and I do; but who does he start in front of? Smith? Langford? Not on any team that thinks it's very good. barrettballer and Ohreally 1 1 Quote

Yep...he is a winning player, but on a team with as much talent and athletic ability as this one has, I see him as a far bigger contributor off the bench than I do playing starter's minutes. You dont need a lockdown defender off the bench. And with Juwan and Romeo we wont need 5 guys who can score starting. To not start a guy simply because he is a walk on regardless of ability is just silly. I suppose Bryce Alford shouldnt have started his senior year. Despite averaging over 15 points Quote

Also, I often agree with your thoughts on how the team will flow, especially lately!Funny thing is, the biggest disagreement I have with you is on your point number five! Especially after last night’s statements by Archie, I am pretty much completely convinced that the chances of Davis being a contributor this year are slim to none.Sent from my iPhone using BtownBanners mobile app thebigweave, Old Friend and mdn82 3 Quote
Brass Cannon Posted May 31, 2018 Author Posted May 31, 2018 Also i am getting less bullish on Green starting. Spent time looking at stats today and its extremely rare for guards to take a big leap soph to junior year. Much more common for 4 star freshman to make an instant impact Quote

I've watched enough of Phinisee's games over the past couple of years and I think he's the real deal. He'll shoot if he has to, but he's always going to be looking for the open shooter first and he's going to take excellent care of the ball. Laugh if you want, but he'll end up in the top 5 (maybe 3) in career assists when he's finished. thebigweave, rcbowla and ALASKA HOOSIER 3 Quote
