Is anyone else kinda like "what happens if Ohio St. opens up?" with Archie?  Does he ride IU until Thad checks out and then Bolt?  I know I know it's way too soon for those thoughts but it was my one concern hiring him knowing we were all hoping for a guy that would have lingering success here for the foreseeable future.

No way will this happen.

This will be Thad Matta in reserve. Just as OSU stole Matta away from us since we were to late getting rid of Davis, with Archie they were to late getting rid of Matta and he is ours now for foreseeable future (and OSU fans have acknowledged this on their message boards).

Only way Archie leaves us if either he is fired or bolts for an NBA job. Once you're at IU you don't leave for another college job voluntarily (especially at a football school where basketball is second fiddle).

I bet he ends up at UCLA now

Wouldn't doubt it eventually.   But I gotta admit, I wasn't sure how I'd react not getting Billy but I'm actually stoked to have Archie.

Really hope he continues this at IU. Without a doubt Archie needs to land talent and be successful at IU. I believe a huge part of being successful is providing the opportunity for your program to be successful. (The ceiling is the roof..) I would like to see us move closer to the atom Izzo approach over the Tom Crean scheduling fiasco.

B1G/ACC Challenge
Crossroads Classic (Butler/ND)
Gavitt Big East opponent
UL (next 2 years)

This is a solid core for future scheduling. A preseason tourney with quality opponents should give us two more opportunities for + wins and two more okay games.

That gets us to around 8 games.

I would like to see a home/home against a perennial top 25 program to alternate with the ACC challenge. (Arizona would be cool, KU, puke, UCLA, Florida, etc would work too)

Then fill out the schedule with the guarantee wins to get to 13. The timing is key too. I want IU to be playing in big games in big time environments. This provides the opportunity to see what you have in your team and what you need to work on. You don't really get that opportunity playing 8+ opponents that are turrrble.

Make IU great again!!

I wouldn't worry about him leaving for OSU. I know he said it was a dream job but Indiana has a better past and hopefully a brighter future.

Not to mention IU should be more than willing to surpass anything OSU would be willing to offer Archie if he's successful here.

Remember Archie turned down multiple power 5 offers (NC State comes to mind) in order to wait for the right opening. He obviously thinks very highly of the IU job.

My friend who will be one of my roommates next school year told me his grandpa is upset at the hire... 83 years old... Wanted Alford. Ugh. Have no understanding as to why someone would prefer a 52 year old coach who's made the tournament less than a third of his years coaching D-I who also defended a sexual predator.

I at least can understand why my dad, grandpa and cousin are worried that Archie might be a lateral move.

Personally I love this hire. I just look at Archie's consistency getting to the tourney 4 straight years and compare Archie's and Crean's stats in the areas where I griped about Crean's coaching pre-firing. If you cut Archie's career in halves, his teams have cut back on turnovers better than Crean's, increased in defensive prowess (opposite of Crean's) and have not become as 3pt dependent as Crean's.

In the first 3 years ('11-'13) Archie's teams averaged 13.1 turnovers/game. In the latter 3 years, the average was 12.0/game (a 1.1/game improvement) . In only one season (2012-13) did the Flyers average more than 13.0 turnovers/game.

Crean's team's average from '11-'13: 13.6. From '14-'16: 13.4/game (only a 0.2/game improvement). In only 3 seasons did Crean's Hoosiers average 13.0 turnovers/game or less (2011-12, 2012-13 and 2014-15).

Next, look at defense.

Archie's teams allowed an average 67.1 points/game from 2011-13. From 2014-16: 64.5/game (2.6/game decrease/improvement).

Crean's teams from 2011-13: 65.4 opposing points/game. From 2014-16: 71.6/game (6.2/game increase/regression).

Its noteworthy that Crean's low in points allowed over the stretch was 62.1/game (2012-13: Zeller's sophomore year) while Archie's was 60.8/game (2014-15: the year he had nobody over 6'6" on the team).

I'm pretty sure if you averaged Kenpom AdjD rankings, the trend would be the same/similar.

Finally: Dependency on 3-Pointers. I know IU shoots a relatively high percentage on 3's, but I feel like a lot of our losses this year came when we didn't shoot lights out ("living and dying by the 3").

Archie's teams 2011-13: 18.5 3PAtt./game. 2014-16: 19.7/game (1.2/game increase).

Crean's teams 2011-13: 16.2/game. 2014-16: 23.3/game (7.1/game increase).

Again, I know Crean's teams (at least this year's team anyway) made a higher percentage of threes than Archie's, and higher percentage on more shots means more points scored. I feel, however like we had on nights where we kicked a$$ with the 3, but way too many off nights, where the high number of attempts and high number of misses killed us.

To me, statistically speaking, Archie has improved (or at least not gone crazy as far as 3s go) in three critical facets of coaching consistent basketball teams, while Crean regressed in those areas.

Crean seems to have peaked (at IU) in 2012 (and his peak was the Sweet 16 with a Ridiculously talented and experienced team), then mostly gone downhill. Plus he's 51 years old.

Archie appears to be on the upswing as a coach and is only 38. He's still growing and has plenty of time to do so, and already showed more consistency than CTC ever did.

Please let me know of flaws in my logic and/or math. Was up too late when I wrote this.

Bored went to see who is following Archie now. A lot of celebs are now lol and most importantly Shane Hiermann(La Lumiere) and Lawrence Norths HC, Park Tudor and a few other HS school coaches in the area.

Point of curiosity. Were any of those coaches following Crean?
