Does anyone honestly think Indiana high school players care about Steve Alford at all?

Alford was a good player and all, but I hate to break it to those who expect him to "lock down the state": 18 year kids today don't give a sh1t about what Steve Alford did 30 years ago.

Apparently Kris Wilkes does.

And then he has awful defenses. The biggest difference is he recruits better. Dude is just as inconsistent as Crean with coaching defense.

He just started recruiting better. He wasnt a better recruiter until he got to UCLA. Then he hasnt really hit his stride until last year on the recruiting trail. Which is why they are a top 10 team this year. The thing about this years team defensively, they were awful. But they have steadily improved and Im not sure what to make of them going into the dance. They could be the statistically worst team to make a final four. Their defense is better than their actual efficiency at this point. They are just playing so mich better there. But its safe to say he will linely make at least a sweet 16.

UNC didn't win it that year Louisville did. To be championship caliber you have to be around 30 or better both of them.

UNC won the title in 09 and were ranked 21st.

But still...saying that Crean hasn't had a championship level defense is still false lol. I'm not saying Crean is a good defensive coach, just pointing out that he's been there before when it was said he hasn't been. (This paragraph wasn't to you but I don't want to double post lol)

Tj Leaf has ties to Indiana as well. Trevon Bluiett was gonna go there but backed out for Xavier. To his defense he is half way across country so it may be a hard sell for some. Last years class and this one have some awesome players in it. He has a top tier wing, pg and big coming in just like he did last year.

Yeah he was an Indiana kid that got recruited by Indiana. I am positive he is not talking out his @SS when he says he will TRY to lock up the state. I really like what he would bring to recruiting.

Let me also go on record as saying I like about 3-4 coaches ahead of him.

This is a great question. Does anyone have an answer? What happened the last time an NBA coach was not fired and moved back to college basketball? What was the timeline?

I think the cat would be out of the bag in early April. If IU isnt being mentioned woth other coaches and they seem to be doing nothing, the media will smell a rat and go searching amd find out its Donovan.

The worst defense to win it all was 2009, UNC. That team was statistcally better than any Crean IU team. I fet defenses fluctuate year to year, but that UNC team still is the worst, which sets the bar higher than any defense we have seen in over a decade. This is why Ive been adamant of needing a defensive minded coach. Its why I love Gregg Marshall, really like Tony Bennett, and love playing devils advocate with people on a coach who isnt good enough. :)

What's weird with Steve's team this year is it statistically matched up close with our 11-12 team. We were 4-AO and 74-AD. They are 3-AO and 82-AD. Should be interesting to see where they end up. Statistically everything else was pretty similar too. To this point his best teams were at New Mexico. Yes he had two top 20 AD (For those discussing Crean not having a top 20 AD he was 21 come on). His years in New Mexico where he was top 20 he had an offense that was top 50ish. That is a team that should make a decent run. I don't see his team (taking coaching out of it) as more than a Sweet 16 team. Their stats are the type of team that can get knocked off early.

I want a COACH. Someone that doesn't need 3 5 stars on their team to win. Someone that when you look at them on the sideline, you know you'll have a chance regardless who's on the floor. Someone who can get the most out of their guys on D. This is not Crean, and not Alford.

We fired him !

Gotcha. 21st one year is bot the same as 21st another year, whoch has been my point  just saying well Crean was 21st and so was UNC, doesnt tell the story. UNC statistically was better. That IU team was a very good team but their defense was statistically a step behind most championship defenses and slightly worse than the worst champion.

Crean hasnt had a championship level defense since his Marquette days. Which begs the question why? I feel the game has evolved and he hasnt evolved with it on the defensive side. Even will the incredibly easy out of conference schedule, his teams at IU havent sniffed the level his best Marquette team did.

Just looking at Pomeroy's top 20/20 rule for picking a champion we are looking at Nova, Gonzaga, Kentucky, and Wichita St. impressive for Mr. Marshall. I don't think he would have the horses obviously, but it isn't easy to be top 20/20.

Been talking to that BTownInsider fellow over at 247. According to him the snag with Donovan are timing and bonus details. Said everything else will be hammered out and fully believes Donovan will be the coach

Whats the timing issue? As long as he is willing to come this year, make it happen. Just have him sign the dotted line, so its locked in. On the money side, give him the bonuses. If he makes his bonuses, then the boosters will be happy amd make up any difference.
