I highly doubt Steve leaves UCLA for a mediocre Indiana program right now. He's got top talent coming into UCLA for the next few years, it's LA, it's somewhat of an easy conference these days.

 

Steve would be a lateral move, yes. Along with many other potential hires including Marshall, Smart, other names I can't remember right now.

In my opinion, ANYONE that proclaims "If (fill in name) is hired, I will no longer root for Indiana University" is welcome to exit stage left no matter who is hired.

When Kelvin Sampson was coach, it was a damn shame, but I was still an absolute, no questions IU fan. I was simply an IU fan that wished we had a different coach. If Tom Crean is the coach next year? Same thing. (though it won't be nearly as bad as when Sampson was in charge)

If the identity of the coach can determine your fandom? For me...GTFO.

 

I'll still be an IU fan, but I'll be an "Oh IU won last night? Sweet" fan instead of a *refreshes btown banners obsessively* fan. My excitement would go out the window with another year of Crean.

For some of you who would like to see Alford on our sideline, there are more issues about his character than just how he handled the rape charge at Iowa.  When he left New Mexico there were stories that he routinely tried to stiff local businesses that provided services to he and his family.  Stiff them in the sense he would try to get the business to accept his doing an endorsement for their business in lieu of cash payment and if they declined, he would drag his heels before finally ponying up.  He was a great player for us and is a step above CTC in coaching ability, but character matters to me and because of his character issues, I'll pass.

I get this, but I'll respectfully disagree. Why should we blindly support an administration that makes bad hire after bad hire? I'll always love my university, but that doesn't mean I should have to stand for mediocrity either just because it's there. At some point, accountability has to happen or nothing ever changes

I don't think that assumption is correct. Not saying your logic isn't sound, just not the case with Alford

Loads of the same stories out of Iowa when he was at the helm there.  Haircuts at the local barber and even about a John Deere tractor being delivered and he thought it should be free because he was Steve Alford.  Great player 30 years ago for IU.  No thanks as a coach.  I'd take Damon Bailey before him.  Humble down to earth guy, plus he's got a budding superstar son at BNL this year.

I disagree with this to an extent. Yes, you can support the players, team, and program without supporting the coach. However, if that program continues to hire questionable coaches that relationship, even by blood, can be fractured.

I stepped away when Samscum was hired. That went against everything IUBB I was raised on. Like a family member, if they committed a crime I would not fully support them just because we were blood relatives.

I stepped away when Samscum was hired. That went against everything IUBB I was raised on. Like a family member, if they committed a crime I would not fully support them just because we were blood relatives.


Yeah I think this is fair. I won't step away for ever but it would make me back away. Support family but there's something to be said for tough love. Continue to make bad hires and tough love will be shown. In this case, tough love is all about the dollars and fewer people in the seats. And before anyone says anything, I know butts in seats doesn't make much difference in the big money scheme at least in the short term.
