TOM CREAN FIRED

Recommended Posts

I was talking with a coworker today and he brought up a good question: When did you know Tom Crean wasn't the right fit for IU?

He responded that he knew he was not the right coach in Creans third year, when he was at a game and Crean made a bizarre substitution, he and his friend looked at each other and said "oh gosh we made a mistake", then saying at least Mike David knew who his 5 best players were.

I responded that I felt Crean was the wrong fit, not when IU got embarrassed in the S16, but the following year. Crean should have been so mad about the S16 loss that he spent the entire offseason drooling over it and finding ways to beat the **** out of Syracuse the next time they play, instead we played Syracuse in the ACC challenge and got embarrassed again.

When did you know he was the wrong fit?

The day he has hired because I researched him Marquette years. The Syracuse fiasco made me 100 percent sure.

The moment I knew Crean wasn't the right fit was when we lost at home to Iowa after being up 10 in the second half, in his third year. We have the ball, down one, 10-12 seconds left and inbounding under our own hoop, and Verdell Jones WALKS THE BALL UP THE FLOOR. Seriously. Iowa was roughly equal to us at the time, and that game marked their second consecutive season sweep over us, with different coaches.

Then there was a game where we actually beat Wisconsin, we had a 4 point lead with a minute to play, he subs in Austin freaking Etherington for Noah Vonleh. Etherington guards the 7 foot Frank Kaminsky. Wisconsin immediately saw the mismatch and jumped. 3-point play, lead cut to one. We won that game in spite of Crean and everyone knew it. Crean later admitted to "over-subbing." Another classic case of him getting so caught up cheerleading and frantically pacing the sideline that he had no clue what was actually happening on the floor.

I had reservations the very first year due to substitution problems, playing time, and how he treated players making mistakes. I feel like that team should have won a few more games then they did, maybe 8-11 range but I chalked it all up to a rebuild and because of how hard and passionate we played every game that season. The second season showed the same coaching mistakes mentioned in season 1 and felt we under achieved again in the win totals. Also, we didn't play with the same passion as that first season. But by the third season when I saw no progress in the coaching aspects previously mentioned, I knew. Even though we beat Kentucky and most say that was an over achieving season, his coaching deficiencies were still glaring.

Then what sent me over the edge was the season we lost to Syracuse. We had the most complete, talented team in the country and should have had the #1 overall seed, but Crean let it slip away at the end of the season through terrible coaching and practicing the team too hard. We should have gotten to the final four at the very least and would have more than likely with a good coach.

In the second-third year range ,BUT then Zeller renewed hoped because I thought, IF, he can recruit instant impact players from here on out we have a chance.

He hasn't recruited enough of those guys and his SUB patterns have been astoundingly awful since day 1. Most of them make zero sense within the context of the game.

Not trying to cause chaos but Alex Kennedy just posted an article...I will post link in a minute, but word around the NBA is the Thunder are sending mixed signals with the deadline coming. Says the Thunder have told people they may move on from some assets to help the future. I'm telling ya Russell loves OKC but I think he see's he can't win a title alone. I know they don't trade him at least till the offseason but Billy D may just be an option. It would take 7 or 8 million a year though.

I was done after the Syracuse debacle. There was no excuse that team didn't go to at least the Final Four. But they should've won the national championship. I knew IUs fate with Crean after that game. I have wanted him gone ever since that catastrophe of a game

I had managed to repress Jones walking the ball up the court.  I'd call it brain dead but it takes a fully functioning brain to do something THAT stupid.

Would we really need to increase Donovan's salary that much to appeal to him?

He's making $6M/year now.  Does a job paying $5M/year appeal to him less?  I guess what I'm trying to say is what can't you afford at 4-5M per year as opposed to $6M?

In that Iowa game, didn't Crean call a timeout then give the ball back to Jones?  Then Jones proceeded to go the opposite way of the screen and clang a forced shot when he was supposed to take the screen and dish to Hulls?

That was one game, I think it was the same one.  Hard to tell, so so many WTF moments over the last 9 years lol.

Crean is making 3 and Donovan is easily more than twice the coach.  On the off chance that Crean is worth 3 then Donovan is worth 7.

Just now, Hoosier Guy said:

A lot of programs will crap their pants once IU gets a competent coach. Good lord Crean is awful. All of these god awful game situation coaching skills. The fact we remember almost every single one of them. Lol this guy is awful. Cmon Billy Donovan. Restore IU

To be fair, we can't remember all of them.

There's far too many to remember all of them.  It's mainly the most colossal coaching fails.

That's why I said almost. Way too many to remember every single one of them. All IU needs is a competent coach and these other programs know it too

I don't think almost is fitting, far far too many.  It's mainly the "holy crap, are you trying to be this incompetent" variety, of which there are still too many lol.

It's so bad man lol. It is comical though. It's why I drink during games to make it even more funny
