Random thoughts...

The Boston Celtics is a class organization that can win at the highest levels in the best league, second best isn't even close, in the world. However, IU would offer the opportunity to reclaim elite status under your guidance. Is it possible that a combination of family and reestablishing your childhood program to the top of college basketball is a big enough draw?

When the IU coaching position is vacant you present your best pitch to the man. If he turns it down multiple times you move on. I still believe Stevens ends up at IU before he retires.

The next in line would be Donovan and Bennet. All three (Stevens, Donovan, Bennet) would be "lifers" at IU. When you make that move you're committed to them to bring a natty to Btown.

If we reach a point where none of them are willing to sign on the dotted line you move to the next tier of younger coaches with upside. Archie Miller and Hoiberg.

That would be my list with Marshall and Mack being "better-than-Crean" but not great hires. You have to think highly enough of the program that you're willing to fail in order to succeed. I believe most on here still consider IU a blue blood with potential to be elite. We need to focus on getting the program back to that level. The first step is believing we can get back there.

Stevens and Donovan have to be the first calls, doing whatever you have to do to land one; not just call to call.

Either of them with the resources of IU is a nightmare for any non-IU fan.

I don't care what Stevens says publicly, no way he doesn't go home and talk it over and give it serious thought.  Those of us from Indiana(including Stevens) know what Indiana bball means and how important and close we hold it to our hearts.  You don't just say eff it without a second thought.  No way.  U see it all the time.  Coaches in every sport publicly saying they aren't going anywhere when rumors come out and 2 days later the coach moves on.  He(Stevens) is gonna think on it trust me.

This. I want the rest of the B1G and college basketball world pooping their pants when IU lands an elite coach.

Exactly.  I wonder what other objective fans who follow college basketball think of our program the last 10-20 years.

They probably look at IU basketball the way that I look at University of Texas football.  They've got all the resources, fan support, recruiting hotbed, money, tradition..so what is their problem?  Why can't they put it together?

There's no excuse.

Sooo... what's with people not realizing that the Celtics are a "blueblood" of the NBA, and BS is currently bringing it back to its former glory...?

The only draw outside of the NBA vs. College argument is that BS supposedly said IU is his dream job. People's opinions also change over time... I don't think there is really any logical reason why he would chose IU over Boston.

Not saying it won't happen, but there isn't a strong argument why it's even reasonable to think it could happen.

There are many reasons that make it plausible why he could choose IU over staying in Boston.

- how does the fam feel indiana vs. Boston
- chance to be a legend in your home state
- chance to complete unfinished business
- chance to have your "dream job"

What's with people assuming that people assume the Celtics aren't a "blue blood" in the NBA? The Celtics are a top 2 job in the history of the league.

Has every coach/player/employee picked the greatest franchise/employer? That would make for an extremely boring world.

To much Andy Enfeld, Shaka Smart for me.  I want a fundamental coach.  Give me Archie, if not Stevens!  Please, for the LOVE OF GOD, stay away from Hoiberg!  He will not unite the fanbase.  I don't think Archie will either, but after 2-3 years people will see what he will do here!  Longevity.

IIRC Hoiberg would be owed $15 Mil by the Bulls if they let him go during/after this season--in addition to the $$ they still owe Thibodeau. And he doesn't coach defense (I know, I know: he could hire a great defensive assistant--where have I heard that one before?)

I really think Bennett would be a great hire and would unite the fanbase.Fundamental and defense minded.Virginia is a nice job but as one poster noted they will always play second fiddle in the ACC. IU, even with our lack of sucess is still seen as a national blueblood.I have to believe Indiana high school coaches would have more respect for him than they have for Crean.Tom's screwed the pooch there and is a walking dead man because of it.Bennett is a already recuiting the state hard and getting results.Throw the bank at him.

If the Bulls want to sever ties with Hoiberg, and IU wants to sever ties with CTC, and IU wants Hoiberg...

The finances will absolutely be worked out.

For that matter, pretty much all big name coaches have a substantial buyout on paper. If a coach truly doesn't want to be where he is, the buyout is invariably worked out.

I'm also all in for Bennett if we can't get Brad or Donovan. There's a chance we can miss on all 3 and that's where it gets hard. I can't fully feel comfortable with hiring any of the other coaches.

I get it, but the chances of full comfort with the new hire are pretty low.

Sooo...given that IU will do their due diligence on the marquee hires and that they are all quite unlikely, the choice then becomes a "lower comfort level" hire, or CTC indefinitely.

Then which do y'all prefer?

Definitely the lower comfort level hire. This is just a big decision and I hope they get it right. Within the next years or so I believe Duke, Michigan St and maybe other big time programs will be looking for a new coach. Maybe some coaches like Donovan or Bennett could be waiting for a job like that. At this moment though, I'm just overthinking everything lol.

Great point that no one has touched on yet.

Within the next five years, UNC, Syracuse, Duke, and maybe MSU will be looking for marquee replacements.

None of them are likely to be looking after this season, which means we could be the primary blue blood destination for an A level up and coming coach who is thinking about a move.
