TOM CREAN FIRED

Recommended Posts

My buddy who is a Notre Dame fan texted me out of nowhere the other day and just said "Hoiberg is your next coach" so at least others outside of IU circles are seeing there is a need for change

Fox News talked about some colleges planning on reaching out to Hoiberg if returning next year to Chicago seems unlikely. Didn't name any schools, but said it will likely be a big name school. It seems like this could pick up steam if we head towards a new coach. I don't know how he would fit, but I actually like Hoiberg a lot. Just don't know about for us.

I really don't want FH. Dude never had a top 50 defense. I want somebody that can coach defense please lord.

I get that trust me. Idk though when I actually picture him here I like it for some reason. He hasn't been a coach for a long time and he is still growing. Has respect in every circle. Good recruiter and developer. Good or bad if he can deal with Rondo, Wade and Butler and before Rose and Noah then I think college kids will be a piece of cake. If he could bring in a big time defensive coach on the staff and is willing to accept help I could get on board. Stevens and Donovan are pipe dreams. After those two Hoiberg is just as good as others we can get. I would take Bennett over him though.

Any reason to believe Donovan is a pipe dream?

There was a lot of talks of him going back to college if NBA doesn't work out. He has definitely worked out and if KD hadn't choked he would probably have a ring of very close to it. Simple though I have followed OKC for RW and now Vic and one thing is 100% with them...they don't give ya long and if RW leaves they could go a different direction. Scott Brooks built a great foundation only to get fired. I think he is a great NBA coach and probably gets another job without having to come back to college. Donovan likes stability though which is hope for a return to college and we are one of the best jobs besides Duke and possibly UNC in 5 years that can open up. It isn't very likely hence the word dream lol.

And please dont mention Russ's extension because after next year he is gone if the Thunder don't make a big move. I love Victor but he isn't a #2 option. He is a #3. They need someone else.

I don't really view Donovan as an NBA lifer and could easily see him coming back to college. It wouldn't be easy, but it's possible. He coached at Florida for nearly 20 years, and he even went back after signing a contract with the Magic. Because of that, he wasn't allowed to accept any NBA job for 5 years. Doesn't sound like a guy whose dream is the NBA. I think if the IU job was open, he'd seriously consider it.

Stevens, on the other hand, is more than a pipe dream. Barring some major turn of events, he will never coach here or at any college for a long, long time. He reportedly loves having summers off and hated the recruiting element of college. He also wasn't too thrilled about Butler leaving the Horizon League and having to recruit against bigger schools because of all the cheating that goes on in recruiting.

I would love Donovan or Bennett. Those need to be our top two targets.

Stevens clarified in an interview with Dan Patrick that he actually loved recruiting. Not sure where that rumor came up from but it's false.

This has been another Crean season. Its been pretty depressing since the Ft Wayne game. I knew then that things were going to go terribly wrong. I would love to be able to see into the future and know Crean's status. I do have to believe that Glass is feeling extreme heat from the alumni, fans, general public, and most importantly the trustees. I am optimistic that he is finally ready to make a change. I believe he is trying to remain positive in his public comments to help recruiting , but planning in private for Crean's invevitable departure. Fingers crossed !

We all know he's going to be recruiting Gordon Hayward to the Celtics this summer. Stevens coming to Indiana isn't going to happen:(

Hoiberg, Marshall, Archie.

I'm guessing that would be the most likely list (and in what order I do not know), if we truly are in search mode after this season.

Why Hoiberg? In 5 years as a college coach, his highlight is one Sweet 16. Don't we want an upgrade from Crean?

FIRE HIM! This is embarrassing

Excellent job at Iowa State; getting to the Sweet Sixteen and winning 23+ games per season there is no small task, and is an upgrade from CTC's results.

Iowa State Cyclones (Big 12 Conference) (2010–2015)

  • 2010–11 Iowa State 16–16, 3–13 in conference
  • 2011–12 Iowa State 23–11, 12–6 in conference, NCAA Round of 32
  • 2012–13 Iowa State 23–12, 11–7 in conference, NCAA Round of 32
  • 2013–14 Iowa State 28–8 11–7 in conference, NCAA Sweet Sixteen
  • 2014–15 Iowa State 25–9, 12–6 in conference, NCAA Round of 64
  • Total at Iowa State:115–56 (.673) 49–39 in conference (.557)

Pros: Great personality/face of a program. VERY likeable; Indiana high school coaches will be immediately enamored. Young, but not too young; still evolving and improving as a coach. Pro and major conference college head coaching experience. Very detail oriented. Fun, pro-style offensive system that high-end recruits will flock to. Fantastic, yet unblemished recruiter. And, unlike Self, Stevens, Donovan, Sean Miller, and others mentioned...will be available.

Cons: Never had a team that has dominated defensively. Never been a big NCAA tournament success.

Chart of Iowa State since 2000, with Hoiberg's 2010-2015 period far and away the most productive:

Season Records
Season Overall Conference
2001 25–6 13–3
2002 12–19 4–12
2003 17–14 5–11
2004 20–13 7–9
2005 19–12 9–7
2006 16–14 6–10
2007 15–16 6–10
2008 14–18 4–12
2009 15–17 4–12
2010 15–17 4–12
2011 16–16 3–13
2012 23–11 12–6
2013 23–12 11–7
2014 28–8 11–7
2015 25–9 12–6
2016 23–12 10–8
2017 14–8 6-4

Yeah, those cons tho. I want a coach that knows how to win conference titles and make runs in March. Hoiberg has neither. Imo he isn't an upgrade at all.

Those two yellow bolded years from the chart are conference tournament championship years.

In my opinion, you need to step back at little bit with candidate performance expectations. Coaches at major conference champion caliber teams that are regularly getting very far in the NCAAs are not looking to move! That's not a knock on IUBB; the Jay Wrights and Bill Selfs of the world are not looking to move anywhere.

You make a decent case for him being a moderate upgrade. In my opinion IU should only make the move for a "can't miss", home-run type hire. Of course I would like someone that addresses the short-comings of CTC's teams, but unless the new guy is THE ONE to hang a banner, not worth it. Maybe unrealistic, but that is my opinion. Otherwise we'll just be on a treadmill of constantly seeking marginal improvement. I don't see Marshal or especially Hoiberg as that guy.

Yes, regularly getting far in the tournament is unattainable. But show me some success. If the Sweet 16 is your pinnacle, you should be excluded imo.

Well then, under that standard we will have a situation in which:

  1. We reach out to Stevens and Donovan annually,
  2. They say no annually, and
  3. We have Tom Crean as IU's basketball coach indefinitely.

It was Hoiberg's pinnacle when he inherited a terrible team at IOWA STATE, stayed a total of five years, and never had a team with star quality future-NBA level talent.
