TOM CREAN FIRED

Recommended Posts

Obviously, there is a lot season left this year and this thread will swing wildly based on what happens the next six weeks.

But even looking to next year, I feel pretty optimistic about the team:

Bryant (absolutely needs another year on the defensive end)

Davis

OG

Juwan

Hartman

Rojo

JBJ

Newkirk

Cujo

Green

Rawle or Thon as icing on the cake? Grad transfer?

That's a squad with depth and size and a lot of those guys have will have big time experience to help the young bucks. I'd project that team to at least be in the top 4 of the B1G next year barring any major injuries. The rebounding depth will be huge.

What I'm saying is maybe this is a turning point and Crean has adjusted his coaching/mindset (as we've seen this year) to sustain the success. Only time will tell.

I agree with the sentiment that there really aren't any non-reaching candidates out there at the moment other than Stevens/Donovan/Tony Bennett. These guys to me are the only options that would be satisfactory and maybe Chris Mack if Xavier makes a run this year.

I have been reading the comments and it is interesting situation right now. Just remember there is a big difference between winning the big ten and almost winning it. I am content to let the rest of this season play out before evaluating it much further.

But u don't know if it's going to be a mediocre hire. You're just afraid. Grow up man and stop fearing the unknown.

Your logic is irrational and bred from impatience. Give me a logical argument for a realistic option, and then maybe you'll have a point worth debating.

How is. You don't know the future illogical?

You are being irrational. We have to stay mediocre if we try to get better it could fail and we end up mediocre.

This team is 22-6. At the end of the day you have to give the coach some props, regardless of the head scratching moments during the season. Results were demanded and 22-6 is the result he and the team have produced so far.

We should be ecstatic with that record but many of us get too wrapped up with our dislike of Crean. I'm guilty of it. 22-6. That's a d*mn good year so far. Imagine if we would've take care of business at PSU.

Yes and no. We all knew with this roster and schedule this should be a 25 win season pretty easy. We are on track for that. I don't think Crean has overachieved by any stretch. We have looked horrible this year at times and Crean has looked masterful at times as well. I tend to lean pessimist but we are right where I thought we'd be.

And then its tourney time (BTT and NCAA). Never been Creans strong area.

8 years of the same mediocrity. Impatience? Really?

You're scared to live in the present, man! What have you done for me lately? If Crean continues on the current trajectory of the season, wins the B1G Title, does decent in both tournaments, that's showing more promise to me than any small time coach.

I think Crean's career at Indiana is like one of Elon Musks SpaceX rockets - he's about to take off into space, or blow up into a million tiny pieces.

I'd say we're underachieving thanks to the joke our team was earlier in the year.

I don't think he is going anywhere regardless of how we finish but if he maintains the current trajectory through both tourneys then I will have to reevaluate my stance on he must go.

If Crean makes it to another Final Four, he'd join the likes of Bill Self, Thad Matta, Larry Brown, and Bob Huggins with two a piece. Calipari and Boeheim(!!!) for all their years of coaching and winning have only been four times a piece.

Calipari only has two Final Fours. It took him 3 trips to get his first :)

As has already been said Crean is a boom or bust coach where the booms don't win big and the busts aren't bad enough where people can't find reasons to keep him.  Some may be okay with that, I'm not; he's here to win big and if he's not going to (which there is absolutely nothing to say he will) then he can go.

It's always been that way with him and until he actually proves otherwise, and one season doesn't do that, he still is.

I'm sorry, but with all due respect, I just don't agree that Crean has somehow become a better coach this year. In my opinion, he's the same coach he's always been, turning out the same product, which relies on three point shooting, athleticism and a weak schedule to get the NCAA tournament card punched. His Big Ten record, though nice, has been achieved during one of the weakest top to bottom years I've seen in the last 40 seasons of Big Ten basketball. Ohio State?; down year, Michigan?; down year, Michigan State?; extremely average, Wisconsin?; arguably their worst year in over a decade, Illinois?; pathetic team. Northwestern, Nebraska, Rutgers and Penn State, (do they really count?). That leaves Purdue, Iowa and Maryland, none of which have a snowball's chance in hell of winning it all. Most years, we have two, maybe three teams in the league where an argument could be made that they have what it takes to get to the final four. This year?, there isn't one team that I'd give good odds of achieving it; not one.

Am I happy we're winning and in first place; sure, but let's not fool ourselves. This team has the same DNA that all of Crean's teams have had through the years; poor defense, a Jekyll & Hyde offense, too many turnovers and way too many mental errors. Supremely beatable when either an equally talented team plays them, or when a lesser team knows how to force them in to a half court game. This is what Crean's coaching philosophy leads to. This is Tom Crean.
