TOM CREAN FIRED

Recommended Posts

http://assemblycall.com/shows/iu-duke-postgame-show-2015/

The part about defense is towards the end. Maybe, 15 or 20 minutes left. It was about when I was entering the bridge line and I think ended just over the bridge, so that tells me around 15 to 20 minutes. But, who knows?

I love them, they're one of the only post-game shows I've found with analysis from people who understand basketball (looking at you Crimson Cast). Though, there are a surprising lack of Indiana basketball (and football) podcasts in general.

Thanks for obliging, sir.

Why is this an ouch? Pat Summit could out coach most coaches in the big ten

Because she has Alzheimers.  If it was pre-Alzheimers I'd definitely agree.

But I think Josh was suggesting  Pat Summit with Alzheimers is a better coach than Crean.

The post-Duke Assembly Call had a great segment on how he needs to look at what he's doing and do the complete opposite. Just stop trying to do it himself and either delegate it to someone else in the staff or find another way to teach the defense because it is obviously not working. They're right. I don't know what is going on in practice, but I think we are good on gameplanning and offensive work until Notre Dame. Let's only do defensive drills for one kind of defense.

Actually, that whole Assembly Call is very very good if people don't normally listen. They're a fairly optimistic group, but the way they breakdown the failures in coaching over the past few years and the feeling of disappointment and sadness in the hearts of IU fans is great. Jerod has a great speech at the end about how much it sucks to be a fan right now and how it shouldn't.

Jerod was actually my roomate in college for 2 years.  He has a very distinct and knowledgeable way of getting his thoughts out.  And knowing his background as I do, he is very intelligent not only about sports but especially IU basketball.  He deserves a lot of credit for how the Assembly Call has come about and the success that it is having.  Very proud to call him a good friend.

I was listening to pre game I think before st jhons Fisch asked yogi about being a leader and asked if it was hard for him and he straight up said yes. He struggles to voice to the kids what they should do on and off the court. I understand him some people just are not cut out for that. Not sure who crean should have pushed to be the leader though if he realized he couldn't. It was the Hoosier spot light maybe somebody could find it if they wanted to listen

Yeah that'd be less-than-tasteless. (My guess is he didn't mean it like that)

Troy has had off court issues, never played defense and been out of control since he got here but continued to start and play a bunch of minutes.  WHY?

Did we promise Uncle Boo we would get him to the next level?

Hate to label a kid I have never seen play but isn't De'ron Davis a Boo disciple as well? Are we looking at another TW with him?

This whole thing is somewhat insane to me. The fact that I am, seemingly, sticking up for a coach who I think deserves to be fired. But the points being made just seem to be piling on and don't really make much sense.

Promises are made in recruiting. That's the norm, not the exception, BY ANY MEANS.

1) YF- alleged promised starter? If that is true, which I have never heard outside of on here, then I guess that was a mistake? I know those promises go something along the lines of "you'll be our starter from day one" which isn't immune to a benching throughout a career.

2) TW- Did Crean promise to get Troy to the next level? Yes, he'd be insane not to use that pitch/promise to Mom. Boo is smart enough to know that his nephew is going to make it based on his measurables alone. Not an issue.

3)JBJ- promised minutes as a primary ball handler? This system runs with a lot of guys with the ball in their hands. I don't see it being force fed JBJ's way. Am I off there?

Yea, I'm not arguing with you. I agree these three are issues. But, they haven't been dealt with, evidently.

Edit. Selfish play must be dealt with by the staff. We watch our rival coach to the south deal with a new roster of kids every season with one eye on the NBA. They usually play defense from the start and end up in a final four. It can be done.

I think you're going to recruit top players if you can. Crean hasn't always been in that position in the early days. Cody absolutely was a star.

So what can Crean really do in identifying trouble? Well there were signs in all cases but, again, you take the talent.

YF is clearly that. Everyone knew he had some of these issues but kids were recruiting each other to IU at that time. So yes, there were warning signs but i'm going to allow that article to spell them out more than i'd like to get into. Regardless, what is Crean going to do, not go after a MCDAA in his backyard where there is an obvious need at the positon? No, he's going to go get him and hope he buys in and is humbled by a veteran team where he becomes the pg. It didn't happen.

TW is clearly a talent. But he is there for himself. Crean saw an opportunity late in the recruiting calendar to get a top talent and had a connection to the program. Warning signs? TW has played for his Uncle or played for coaches influenced by his uncle. TW grew up playing in that environment and can't imagine there is much accountability to the team.

JBJ is a talent. Warning sign? Played for Dad forever, never held accountable. What is Crean going to do when the kid is a top player in the state and is calling HIM at 14 years old? Say no thanks? Again, you assume this guy is going to buy into the system, be about the team etc you get it. But they just aren't.

There is no way to measure this or anything, but it's my belief that there is one guy who could have stopped the egos below him. Then again, Will couldn't even get that kids head on straight so who knows.

idk, this doesn't jive well with me at all. Crean needs to do a better job of evaluating players and monitoring their red flags. Nobody would have cared if we didn't get Yogi, an instate all American if he landed DSR, Nick Moore, Gary Harris, Dunham and the list goes on. There is a ton of talent in Indiana and across the country that he should be able to reject the kids that don't play defense and have personality and behavioral issues. He chooses these kids as much as they choose Indiana.

These kids that aren't buying in are his fault

I'm with you. My questions really weren't meant to be directed at you or Wayne's, more of a thinking out loud thing that was spurred by your post.

I'm not absolving Crean here. I may not have stated that in my last post, but definitely did in the ones prior. It's on him, too. But it's a combination is all i'm saying and I certainly don't feel bad for the players.
