Archie vs Gregg

Marshall.

Can't argue with his results. Only drawback is his ability to recruit Indiana and the midwest, but I think if he recruits at least as well as Crean did, we'd be competing every year for a conference title.

The guy has done nothing but win everywhere he's been.

Based on results, Marshall.  His teams win conferences (13 out of 19 years) and go dancing (13 out of 19 years) on a consistence basis.

I look at the question being, Upside vs Consistency.  I'll take consistency every single time, especially if he's coaching at a school like IU.

missing the tournament once every 3 years is consistent enough for you??

PIcked this up on the Shockers forum

"Another article on going after HCGM for the NCState job. I am not worried about NC State as he could wait for a non-rebuilding job with a blue blood, which would seem to rule out Indiana. "

I don't know if he's been anywhere but Wichita state, but getting a non-power 5 team to the tournament that often is very impressive

The feeling from WSU is that Marshall is tired of the Missouri Valley Conf.  25 wins and you have to wonder if you will make the tournament.

They are much more worried about NC State and Missouri than IU.

I think the topic title should be Archie or Gregg vs Crean. Guys like Donovan, Sean Miller and Tony Bennett are no brainer upgrades over Crean. But are any of the other realistic candidates any better than Crean? Sure I like Archie and Marshall a lot, but I'm skeptical whether they are true upgrades.

Donovan and Bennet are highly unlikely to come to IU. There is no way in hell Sean miller is leaving for IU lmao

Exactly my point - which is why the question needs to be asked if Archie or Marshall are truly any better than Crean. If not, it makes no sense to make a move and set back the program five-ten years. May be better to wait another year to see if any of the younger coaching prospects emerge as clear heavyweights.

If you're going to break it down in the terms of math averages you should then probably consider his full body of work.  Here's a good example, Bob Knight his first 19 years went to the dance 9 times and 7 conference championships.

I was only talking about the NCAA.  He's been to the dance the last 6 years in a row.  He's won the NIT and has only missed a post season tournament 3 times during his 19 year career.  Coaching for 9 years at Winthrop he only missed the NCAA twice.  And at WSU he's only missed a post season tournament once.  And one could argue a NIT bid at a school like WSU is more than likely an at-large NCAA tournament bid for IU.  Because, well, it's Indiana University aka see the name of this website.  Yeah, I would call that pretty consistent.

The amount of teams dancing back when RMK started coaching was lot More exclusive than it is now. They let some mighty shady hooker-looking teams in the dance these days. Js

Ha!  You got a point.  I was just trying to put some perspective into the math average comments.

Marshall and its not even close. I get the Archie love and his projection. The problem is its a projection. They both coach at the same same level and Archie couldnt hold Marshall's jock. Marshall is a top 5 college coach right now. He isnt scared to move up , he has been smart and tactful with his career. He has 1 move left and I expect it to be to a blue blood. Marshall is well beyone Crean, those who think they are similar, havent paid attention to Marshall. Marshall's fiery personality is a plus to me. I want a coach who will get fired up and not just frantically pace back and forth in a nervous tizzy.

Edit: Marshall can also coach for another 20+ years. Age isnt an issue.

My top 4 are Stevens, Donovan, Marshall/Bennett.

There's some projection with Marshall as well, especially in terms of recruiting.

I don't really get how someone can say a guy that has done nothing but win consistently everywhere he's been isn't a clear upgrade over a guy that has never won consistently anywhere.  Marshall is an upgrade over Crean, how much I'm not sold on but he is absolutely an upgrade.

I'd have Bennett over Marshall because he's currently in a major conference so may be less projection involved.
