Fire Fred Glass

Recommended Posts

I do think that Fred Glass needs to be under careful watch still.  The gripes people had about him were fair.  The giving up a home game is silly even if you can't play it at assembly hall, we could have played it at Bankers Life or something.

The Baseball team is regressing

Wilsons situation was a cluster**** of epic proportions

Soccer has plateaued it seems.

These are legit complaints, if he lands Donovan and we start winning like we should all is well and good.  But if the new hire takes of slowly and these things don't change, you gotta look at the common denominator.

They're just words. You have to read between the lines. What I read was "I'm weak".

I thought it was as good of a press conference as we could've asked for. I feel good about things after watching it. I liked when someone asked about us maybe accepting the fact we aren't a top job anymore and Fred basically saying "I think you're wrong, here's why we're a great destination." I feel much better about the likelihood we land a top coach now than I did when we first found out Crean's gone.

We will officially take this thread down and remove it from the site when he names Brad Stevens or Billy Donovan the new head coach :)
If he doesn't do that (and it's not super likely) there will be plenty of people who will still want to utilize this thread lol.

This thread came about because everyone convinced themselves that he wouldn't fire Crean... don't see any reason now why this would be relevant unless he made some boneheaded hire like Alford. Glass has been great for Indiana.

I'm gonna disagree with that. The Wilson hire and situation was a fiasco. Baseball is returning to its old ways and soccer seems to have stagnated. The facilities he's gotten are great but I think those were more a product of the timing than glass himself.

The Wilson situation where the head coach was creating legal trouble for the university and was subsequently removed? Seems like the proper way to handle it to me...

I mean, ok. You're just discrediting what he's accomplished by saying that the upgrades were going to happen no matter what at this time.

Baseball and soccer are not programs I've paid much attention to, but as everyone loves to point out, basketball and football or the most important for our fans and revenue.

I wouldn't get so worked up on baseball. IU's trip to the CWS was the equivalent of Butler making the final from the Horizon League. The last B1G team to make the CWS before IU was Michigan in the 80s and they had Barry Larkin. Soccer I agree needs to improve though its tougher to compete against MLS teams competing to bring players into their academies/youth teams than it is when Jerry Yeagley only had to compete with rival schools.

Football wise, it was popular to promote Tom Allen to HC because of the improvement in our defense and his ties to Indiana high schools. I would've hoped that Glass had tried to go after the likes of PJ Fleck who had something going at W Michigan. It'll be interesting in the next 4-5 years to compare IU's standing against Minnesota and Purdue(ha ha ha) to see if Allen can hold his weight.

Baseball was not a fluke. The team the year after was even better. Smith had built something. Now Glass is pissing it away.

I could get behind firing Glass. He made no attempt to ever go after a big-name football coach when several (most notably Mark Richt comes to mind) were available during his tenure. Unless IU gets very, very, very lucky we'll never have a decent football program unless we find a big-name recruiter. If he's somehow able to lure Donovan or Hoiberg from the NBA, I'll withdraw my objection. If he cannot, we'd have been better off keeping Crean.

I am very uneasy about Glass. He was forced into firing Crean. He bungled the situation with Wilson and the hiring of Allen. No national search. He just ducked and did the weakest thing he could do. It reminds me of his predecessors hiring of Lynch and Davis. He is basically a bean counter. No real sports knowledge. I don't see him a an elite AD. He is way down the list in the B10. I am holding my breath and hoping he doesn't blow this hire.
