New option for 1 and dones?
ThompsonHoosier and one other reacted to BGleas for a topic
But the alternative isn't welfare, the alternative could be going to a school that has a policy like IU's, where they'll honor your scholarship even if you leave early. You might not have interest in college at 18, but you might at 28, and it would sure be nice if it was free. 700k isn't that much in the grand scheme for an 18year old that has no clue how to manage that money, especially in Vegas. Look at how many pro athletes that have made millions upon million of dollars are broke within 5 years. You know how many late first/second round pick current NBA players are broke? You'd be surprised. But this outfit is going to suddenly figure out the secret sauce to get young, impressionable and uneducated athletes to wisely manage their money? What's the coaching like in this thing? Is it glorified AAU or is it actually preparing kids for the NBA? Whats the medical staff like? S&C staff? What's the competition like? Can this guy actually bankroll the payroll? Will the games be on TV? Because while the NCAA doesn't pay players, it provides them free marketing, which does result in endorsement money should they make it in the NBA.2 points -

it's a great premise. very needed, as well. essentially a usa u19 travel team. the 700k salary seems heavy, and it's unnecessary to insist on targeting 'mcdonalds all americans'. just state that it'd be another option for top prospects who have no interest in college to further play and develop until they meet the nba's age requirement. there would have to be some kind of qualification if it's limited to one squad because dozens of the top prep players every year would be interested in this. a handful of teams could easily be filled if funding can support it. the one and done phenomenon wouldnt completely disappear from the college game. there would still be top prospects who want to play college, and there would still be freshman unexpectedly blow up and opt for the draft. that isnt going away until the nba changes its rule of age 19 and one year removed of high school. so if you're just looking at how this would impact the college game, it'd be both positive and negative. dominantly positive, imo. on the good side, it would restore some integrity and purify it a bit. scholarships once again given to players who actually desire college. the college game would probably get a boost in balance and parity. on the bad, the talent level would decrease, though the style and quality of play could become more appealing without the heralded fab frosh focus on showcasing and increasing their draft stock. something like this is needed, though it would be concerning if too many chose to forgo college. the best solution is the nba expand and create capacity in the d-league for top prospects with obvious, draftable potential. the owners could keep their precious age 19 and one year removed of high school requirement. they dont have to see the nba roster right away. draft on potential, like whats being done anyway, and see them develop in the d-league a year or two, then get promoted. these players wouldnt be paid anything near 700k in this route but it's better than forcing them to a college campus, a place they dont want to be.2 points -

And hangers on in every inner city in America jumped for joy. I'm sure some kids will get screwed in all of this, BUT, if you wanna play with the big boys......2 points -
Ok. Another option isn't a bad idea though. Why limit options? Let's see where this one goes.1 point

Honestly players who don't want to go to college should just go straight to the D League. They won't make as much money in the D League, but they will have tons of exposure to NBA scouts. On a side note I honestly don't believe that there is this huge problem of kids being "forced" to go to college. Only a small number of high schoolers have actually gone to play overseas. The only ones (Brandon Jennings and Mudiay) went overseas because they didn't qualify for college. If kids were actually being "forced" to go to college even if they didn't want to, there would be A LOT more of them going to play in Europe or in the D League1 point

(2016) PG Curtis Jones to IU
MemphisHoosier reacted to ccgeneral for a topic
Looks like a visit is still in the works here. @michael12duncan: EYBL Houston Day 1: Jayson Tatum battles Dennis Smith; Curtis Jones, John Petty Jr. stand out http://collegebasketballtalk.nbcsports.com/2015/05/09/eybl-houston-day-1-jayton-tatum-battles-dennis-smith-curtis-jones-john-petty-jr-stand-out/ … via @cbtonnbc After a strong-shooting first-half from the perimeter, Jones cooled down a little bit, but he still tallied 18 points and knocked down four 3-pointers. Jones has a bit of a low release on his jumper, but he did a nice job of adjusting his offense when the Fire ran him off the 3-point line. Jones, ranked the No. 54 prospect in the class by Rivals, also added five rebounds. Jones told NBCSports.com that he has scholarship offers from Georgetown, Indiana, Maryland, Oklahoma State, Texas Tech, Virginia, Virginia Tech, West Virginia and Xavier. He would like to take unofficial visits to Georgetown and Indiana at some point.1 point -

Advice to the people in charge and anyone who might support it : You cannot put toothpaste back in the tube. $700K is WWWAAAAAYYYY too much money to offer an 18 year old kid; and enticing kids to become McD's all Americans will be awful for high school basketball and high school coaches. There will be unintended consequences to this which nobody can see now, and it smells of Vince McMahon. That's not what anyone wants basketball to be.1 point -
I think they go back for another year with the dealers. The article said they will pay a lower rate for current college players and for free agents. So it's not just a team that you have one shot at. They can make $1 million plus over 2 seasons. If they don't make it to the league, they can go to college as a millionaire already. If they want to continue to play Europe and Asia would be options.1 point
