(2018) PG Darius Garland to Vandy

Recommended Posts

Some insider that guy is. How could he not know about the connection to IU?! I will say this though. Garland commits this week, the cat is out of the bag with Romeo. Anyone with a brain knows once Garland commits to IU, Romeo follows suit

Love the optimism but I don't think it will be that soon. But just my opinion.

What's everybody's thoughts on PG minutes next year. Assuming Devonte Green maintains his level of play, how do we fit Phinisee and Garland both into the rotation? I'd imagine Phinisee takes a little bit of a backseat his freshman year but Garland will probably earn minutes as soon as he sets foot on campus.

Devonte has done really well in a scrimmage and exhibition, but I’m not ready to assume he’s the answer at PG until we see him in B1G play.

Others with more knowledge have alluded that Phinisee is aware he needs time to develop before taking over, if I remember correctly.

I’m not sure how Green, CuJo, Garland, and Romeo all fit on the court together tho honestly.

Assuming we get both DG and RL I can't envision us not using 3 guard sets. With Cujo getting big minutes off the bench. Phinisee is going to see little playing time his freshmen year but his time will come.

If we miss on RL still not sure he cracks the rotation.

Having guard depth with Garland, Romeo, Green, Jones, Durham, and Phinisee would be fantastic. Add Anderson and Hunter in there as guards/wings as well.

We could, in theory, redshirt Phinisee and still have plenty of depth. I'd like to see Garland run the first team with a distinction first mentality. Green would come off as the 6th man and be a scoring point.

I could see Garland and Green in the same backcourt with Romeo. Kinda like a Ryan Boatright and Shabazz Napier kinda deal with Garland and Green. It wouldn’t surprise me if Jones started adapting to a role of being a shooter over a ball handler. Phinisee will be able to handle, pass, and defend, but won’t be much of a scoring threat at first.

I love the idea of redshirting Phinisee if we get Garland, especially because it's something so foreign to us the past few 8 years.  That would be about the best-case scenario especially if Green continues to show promise.

You'd have to think we'd be plenty deep at the PG spot with a junior Green and freshman Garland if we get the latter.

That would also help in "balancing" the classes out.

I agree with you guys that the guard depth would be fantastic, but there's also a minutes component when it comes to factors taken into a commitment. I'd love for Darius to come, but for the level of player he is, would he get as much floor time as he would at some place like Vandy? Not sure of their roster situation, just using them as an example.
