When Yogi missed those free throws, I have to admit, I thought we were going to pull a Michigan when we beat them for the outright title.

Crean is a great person and I can't imagine him not offering Fran all the support that an opposing coach can offer! I am proud of our coach and what he has accomplished!

crean can refute all he wants but this team is not here without him going down. You know Crean was never gonna sit him down and his defense along with Troy's is what was killing us. Crean is able to bring in guys now that are defense first so helps everything. I think jbj will fit perfect on next years team if Troy leaves.

They were driving to the hospital on one of the worst days of their lives. Iowa coach Fran McCaffery, wife Margaret, and son Patrick, who had just found out he had thyroid cancer. They were headed to talk to the surgeon about what to do next, when the cell phone rang.

 

Indiana coach Tom Crean was on the line with one question. Any news on Patrick? “Malignant,” Fran said, uttering one of the worst words a father could ever have to use about his son.

“Then we’re going to pray, you and me, over the phone,” Crean said. So they did.

Seven months later, Patrick McCaffery is cancer-free. Seven months later, his father can look around at all the Big Ten coaches who get paid the big bucks to torment one another, and understand what it means not to be alone in the dark.

“The support was overwhelming,” he said. “It puts a little perspective to all of this.”

There was Crean.

“You want to compete, you want to win. But when you’re in the same line and you have the same feelings, when something like that happens … you have empathy,” he said of McCaffery.

“It probably helped to solidify our friendship. But it wouldn’t have mattered if we never talked again. That’s how I felt. I would hope somebody would do that for me.”

A little growing up tonight on the road.  Loved seeing the frosh step up and play big roles and then knockdown important FTs at the end.  JMor and OG have been huge when many, myself included, thought they might contribute as upperclassmen.

I question some of Crean's in game stuff, but no one can ever question his humanity and sincerity outside of basketball.  My favorite thing about him!
