IU vs Wisconsin Post Game Thread

 Does anybody else think that maybe once in the hundred times Hayes had Collin,OG or whoever else pinned down on the baseline that we could have sent a guard down to help?

He turned the same way almost every time leaving the defender hanging on.I know he could pass out of that but at least they would've had to hit a jump shot.

I wanted to puke every time he got the ball,knowing it was 2,a trip to the foul line or both.

LOL! Weird. I questioned what was up with this guy earlier in the season.

If he was the guy you could hear on TV before each free throw that is embarrassing. How Crean or any other coach on that staff would let that happen is beyond me.

A couple weeks ago when MSU lost in Madison, and the FT differential was 20, I called home cooking and many agreed. Same thing happens to us and it's back to this team sucks and Crean needs to go. Odd.

Did IU deserve to win? No, not really. Pick any of the reason listed in this thread. The offense went stagnant. Too much isolation. We were extremely careless with the ball, particularly at times in the game when we could have made a big run. Several of our guys didn't really show up. We waited WAYYYYY too long in the game to bring help defense on Hayes and Happ and allowed them to successfully run iso after iso on us. So no, we didn't really deserve to win.

 

But guys, Wisconsin didn't look good, either. Their offense now consists of running iso's. That's about it. Hayes and Happ. That was it. Over and over again. Yet they still turned the ball over (more than any other Wisconsin team in recent memory.) Save for a couple of possessions late in the game, they were not a force on the boards. To put it simple, they didn't really play well. So what was the difference?

 

Starting at about the 10 minute mark of the second half, Hayes drew fouls the majority of the time he touched the ball. Were we fouling him? Yes, at times. Especially on drives to the basket. I'm not disputing that. But the ticky-tack, non-shooting, touch fouls 15 feet away from the hoop? Some games they are called, some games they are not. But they were in the bonus, so they got free throws. And that was the story. THAT COMPLETELY CHANGED THE GAME. They got AT LEAST 8 points on free throws from those "nickel-dimers." Had Hayes been forced to take a jumper instead of being bailed out from touch fouls, we might have stolen this one.

 

Yesterday, people were asking me what my predictions were for the game. I told them Wisconsin would shoot at least 30 free throws.

 

But that's all my opinion. On to the next game.

Good point. Once Nigel starting getting calls there is nothing we could have done differently. A double team to force him to give up the ball would not have worked. The only thing we could do was just take it.

Reasons why I'm throwing shade at Crean.

-Subs
-That out of bounds play ( add that to the many he's drawn up)
-Our ISO offense.

However, our play was very very poor, nowhere near the level of play we have been seeing the past couple of weeks. Troy isn't NBA ready. Our bench is not deep at all, and very streaky. Not having another guard that can score hurts us.

We go as Troy goes.

This game told me that we may still be the same Indiana team we saw earlier in the year... And for the past few years.

Let's play a couple more worthy teams and go from there.

Nigel Hayes shot more free throws than our entire team combined. Every time he touched the ball he was given free throws. That was complete BS.

 

Nobody on our team could even stay in front of him. Hartman, Troy, Max, OG, TB all tried and all failed. They made Hayes look like an NBA all-star last night. Of course he racked up a bunch of foul calls.

Hoosiers showed up but had some awful untimely turnovers. The ending inbound pass was reminiscent of the past poorly executed plays. Lets just hope it's not foretelling......

idk about the disparity, but he lost his head when yogi drove and got hacked by 3 guys with a no call. He let the ref know what he thought that's for sure

Because nobody actually cares about msu. We made mistakes and played into Wisconsin hands. We had calls go our way and didn't capitalize. This is why in pregame thread I told you this was a big game because I expect to get jobbed at their dump. We are still good though win the next three and we are back in great shape for a showdown with iowa. Next Tuesday night is a big game.

It's not a matter of the coaches letting it happen. It's by design and delegation. There's no aspect of the program that Crean does not exert (or attempt to exert) control over.

Not to mention the fact that Crean has a long history of getting into it with opposing players, including distraction tactics on the sideline near IU's bench.

Now it appears he has S&C coach Anderson shouldering some of the load. Let's no kid ourselves by thinking Anderson's gone rogue or doesn't understand his role.

I don't what they showed on TV, but I was sitting about 5 rows behind the bench.  He was in the ref's asses almost every time they were on our side of the court.  He was really trying to work the officials last night.  Unfortunately it didn't do any good.  :(

This still wasn't a big game. Iowa, MSU, Michigan, Iowa, Purdue, Maryland, those are big games that will have a real impact our tournament seeding.

It was to me as well.  I haven't been able to see many games live, but he was working the officials harder last night, than I have ever seen before.

So why is everyone upset? Indiana is the same team they were earlier this year, and last year, and the year before that, and the year before that; nothing has changed. Only our perception, (based on a winning streak against inferior opponents) and thus our expectations have changed, not the actual product on the floor. It's still a mosh pit of hopelessly flawed players, incapable of playing smart, disciplined ball when the competition improves. They're slow on their feet, and slower in their minds. If Wisconsin went to the foul stripe a disproportionate number of times, it's because they were FOULED a disproportionate number of times by players reaching with their hands, not moving their feet, and otherwise being out of position. Was there really anything surprising there? Ditto for the turnovers, which can be attributed almost entirely to poor fundamentals, (we have none). We didn't lose because we played at the Kohl Center. We lost because we're mentally weak, poorly constructed, ill prepared, and still one dimensional on offense. Wisconsin beat us with one of their poorest teams in years, simply by showing up and allowing us and our flaws to do all the rest.

I could give my opinion on what happened last night, but it would sound like a broken record compared to others.

 

Bottom line is, if these guys can't take a punch in the mouth and not fold except for one or two, it's going to be a long rest of the season.

 

Wisconsin is a team that has IU figured out and we always seem to cave to their level.  Until we make necessary game adjustments, this will continue to occur.  Their defense really had us reeling last night.  If not for Yogi, this is a double digit loss.  Unacceptable.  No screens set, no focus, scared shooting (NZ), POOR post defense, no answers.

 

This game has become a laugher every year because everyone knows the outcome.

 

I was hoping this would change.

 

Brilliant game from a Wisconsin point of view.  Calls on our side, nobody is stopping us on the blocks, defensive adjustments aren't being made by IU, guaranteed chance at two points everytime down.  They didn't waver from that plan.
