USF DC Tom Allen hired as DC

Recommended Posts

This hire made my weekend. I am positive Allen is getting a big pay bump. AAC schools have shown willingness to raise pay to keep assistants. No doubt this sort of hire is tied to CKW's extension. When we hired Knorr he was recently fired from arguably the worst P5 football program, he did not have a job. Allen appears to be a rising star in coaching.

The successful formula appears to be either hire a former big name head coach to be your coordinator, or you grab a hot young coach. Knorr was on the downside. This is an exciting move! Probably the type of move CKW wanted to make a couple of years ago but didn't have the budget.

I am sure this hire will pay dividends on the recruiting trail as well!

Really interested to see what happens here.  read an article that Tom helped to put in a 4-5-2 defensive scheme.  hope that doesn't mean another scheme change for IU.

From 247 - http://indiana.247sports.com/Bolt/Indiana-hires-USFs-Tom-Allen-as-defensive-coordinator-42881745

"Allen implemented a 4-2-5 defense at USF, made to combat spread offenses. It's currently unknown what he will do with Indiana's existing personnel, but at USF, he employed the use of a "husky," a player who was a linebacker-safety hybrid. It also used a "bull," similar to IU's "bandit" linebacker-defensive end hybrid, as well as a "rover," a strong safety who plays more in coverage."

I'm not passing judgment on is this a positive move or not for the program overall, but are there some key returnees who will transfer out and some recruits we thought we had now de-commit?  Meant as a rhetorical question because both are likely and how much further will that set us back in trying to shore up a notoriously and historically weak defensive unit before Allen can bring in the caliber of players he needs?
