USF DC Tom Allen hired as DC

Recommended Posts

From 247 - http://indiana.247sports.com/Bolt/Indiana-hires-USFs-Tom-Allen-as-defensive-coordinator-42881745

"Allen implemented a 4-2-5 defense at USF, made to combat spread offenses. It's currently unknown what he will do with Indiana's existing personnel, but at USF, he employed the use of a "husky," a player who was a linebacker-safety hybrid. It also used a "bull," similar to IU's "bandit" linebacker-defensive end hybrid, as well as a "rover," a strong safety who plays more in coverage."

I'm not passing judgment on is this a positive move or not for the program overall, but are there some key returnees who will transfer out and some recruits we thought we had now de-commit? Meant as a rhetorical question because both are likely and how much further will that set us back in trying to shore up a notoriously and historically weak defensive unit before Allen can bring in the caliber of players he needs?

He's known as a heck of a recruiter, in both the southeast and Indiana, so I'd say we'll find the right pieces.

IU grad!

Now we're serious. Great move. I had zero confidence in Knorr for obvious reasons.

I think it is a great move. I was a apologist for Knorr this season, and that was easy to be. I would not have been surprised to see us stick with him. Given more time, getting more of his recruits in, etc. and I think Knorr would have fielded a respectable defense. But this is B1G football and at some point you have to take the guys you have and make it at least respectable. CKW has made comments lately about the defensive culture, and I think that's going to be the kicker, not the scheme.

Wish Coach Knorr the best, I'm sure he'll land on his feet.

Top priority in new hires was the ability to take scary photos. #iufb

I was skeptical of CKW at first. Him being a Carolina guy and going after recruits in NC, GA and FL. However, CKW has shown an ability to adapt, hiring Coach Johns a Midwesterner with deep Ohio roots and now hiring Coach Allen, a pure Indiana guy. It is only a matter of time before these talented Indiana and Ohio recruits start looking at IU as a legit option to stay home and play football!

It is good to have a guy to help with Indiana, but we should always recruit the southeast. The overall talent level is just better there.

Completely agree. However, more talent equals more competition. Not only that, but you're recruiting against SEC and ACC schools. I would argue it's not as sustainable and requires more effort. You might get a very talented player here and there (which we have), but it's more difficult to set up connections with the same high schools when those high schools are giving attention to the local SEC schools first.

Working within our own four hour radius you can set up connections that give you perpetual results. Guys who played with upper classmen that went to IU. Or you want to play against guys you played in high school who went to OSU, Michigan, MSU. These kids go back home in the offseason and workout with each other.

We are starting to see these types of results. Coach Johns got a stud recruit in Peyton Ramsey who is now one of our biggest recruiters in the region. Hate to say it, but Brandon Peters has been a positive recruiting force for UM at the local talent showcases (not like they needed the help anyways).

Regardless, it's good to have a staff who has connections all over the place. Johns and Allen working locally, and CKW grinding out the recruiting trail in the South! This hire came at the perfect time with the dead period coming up. Keep the positive momentum going! BOOM!

The other side of that is that in recruiting the Midwest we are competing against OSU, MI, PSU, ND, etc. in a shallower talent pool. Just recruit them where they are, if they're the guy you want.

Not disagreeing with you, but you can't discount establishing connections with local high schools. Makes recruiting a lot easier for sustained success. This is the sort of recruiting model I am talking about:

We ARE making serious progress with this type of recruiting locally, and hiring Allen is huge. I cannot wait for the dead period to end because I know CKW is going to get us some talented kids! Boom!

We seem to have the connections with local schools, we're just not locking them down. I think IU's chances of recruiting success will always be half local, half south.

The Kentucky model? lol, we seem to have lost the ones we went head to head with UK on. For what good ts done them.

Dead period is over, there were multiple recruits on campus this week.

I get back to civilization for the first time in 5 days and this was the first update my phone got. I admit I am surprised. But I also think this shows how Wilson has grown. He stayed with Mallory for a long time and there really wasn't enough improvement for Knorr's second season. I like the move.
