Let's be honest crean has talked about deflections alot more than most coaches do. Most coaches keep track of deflections and talk about them with the players and assistant coaches not a million times to the general public. A deflection shouldn't mean jack to the fans we want turnovers and then to score on offense. If iu was winning with crean we would all be happy and brag up how smart crean is and how he is a master on getting deflections and leading to wins. When your losing and suck on defense deflections are just annoying

Agree to disagree. We had plenty of people saying the same when he brought up deflections in his UK presser after the Wat shot. But to each their own. He doesn't talk about them much anymore. Wish he went more in depth on them. Not sure why this annoys some so much. It's not like you are actually listening to his post game or you would know how little he talks about them.

I am a religious radio post game listener and he talked about deflections a crap ton. It is a priority stat that not everyone looks at the same. It proves nothing unless you are getting turnovers and winning. I am more interested in guarding the basket and keeping your man or the ball in front of you. How many times do they over play to get a deflection that puts them out of position and give up a easy basket? I think it has to go a bit farther than just a deflection to really mean something.

If you are a religious listener you know he hasn't talked about then near what he used to. It is a primary stat, so I agree with that. They don't overplay to get a deflection, they overplay because our strategy sucks. If you listened without bias you could use the amount of deflections or lack there of to show that. That is what has sealed it for me.

yes he don't say it as much but have heard it recently. Have deflections been down this year I will be honest I don't know that for sure. If I am not busy with my kids I will try to listen to coaches show tonight at 7 and see if he mentions them

It is random this year which says the effort is not there. IMO that's as bad as a bad scheme which he has.

I just find it amusing because watching from my TV or court side I'm not seeing all the deflections that he claims at times. I think it's a great stat to use but I actually question the guys who are tracking them. I think they inflate the true number of deflections and then Crean spits out the stat he is given, to at times say we are playing good defense. That's why I asked what he defined as a deflection.

As a previous poster stated, deflections are worthless if it's getting the defense out of position and giving up easy baskets. Ultimately it's about stopping the other team from scoring, not seeing how many deflections can be had in a game. If the players are unable to play intelligent enough defense to get a deflection without exposing the tram, then they shouldn't be going for it.

Vic was great at deflections and didn't expose the defense. We don't have any Vic's on this team or the last couple.

I definitely agree with the first part. The second I would say that's the equivalent of saying since we turn it over we should quit passing. I think we would all agree that is not the case. Some of the issue offensively is fundamental. Other issues are effort (as noted by the drop in deflections) and positioning. Fundamentals and positioning are on the coach. That shouldn't minimize deflections. They are very critical. Same as boxing out, hedging, rotating on the ball, communication. We aren't very good fundamentally on defense. It's not a deflection thing and those numbers show that.

Got to watch the game finally last night. Team played good, and you could tell they were making defensive changes in practice to keep the kids in front. Didn't happen much, but their movements and positioning was a lot better. Troy kills me the most, with all that athleticism, he is probably the 2nd worst defender on the team.

Great to see my guy play, Morgan. Looked good. Props to PRILLER, he played great lol!

I think we actually agree but are stating it differently. I think playing good fundamental defense will lead to solid deflection numbers. Just as if you would track blocking out, it would lead to solid rebounding numbers. I'm just a firm believer in doing things fundamentally and then these advanced analytic stats will take care of themselves.

And to expand a little, the problem with Crean citing deflections is not that they aren't important. It's that he is using them to say "hey, we're playing good defense" instead of using good defense to say "hey, we have good stats".

Like if you have Vonleh scooping up every loose ball with his long arms so you have decent rebounding numbers and use them to say we are boxing out well.

The causation is just in the wrong direction and there actually is no correlation.
