Will Troy Williams ever be consistent?

Recommended Posts

And I know for a lot of us our mothers would be the opposite. When my coach would bench me my mother was the first to say "you can sit there and cry or work your backside off to prove yourself." I'm extremely thankful for that upbringing and hope players/parents realize it's for the good of the team and individual. Prove to everyone and yourself you're that player Troy.

Don't know how old you are, but I think it's also a bit of a generational thing as to how the 'Momma Williams' of 40-50 years ago handled situations vs. the present day Mommas.

Because the Internet didn't exist so no one could see what she said and take a picture of it to leak it?

And because the media wouldn't report something some rando mother said about their kid because they didn't have to fill tons of airtime?

Because something tells me the mommas themselves are much more similar than you think.

Outside of his athleticism Troy honestly doesn't have much. Every offseason we hear about how his shot has greatly improved but when the season starts, we don't see it. His defense isn't very good, his decision making isn't great, ball handling is shaky. He has the potential to be great but is limited to a slasher. Sheehey was a fantastic slasher for us but he at least had a nice midrange shot and played D

We are on the same page here. His whole game is based on his athleticism. His shot is better compared to his freshmen season but not great by any stretch. There are a ton of 6'7" athletes out there.

I think Troy can be a superstar, but he has do to more than show up and show off. He needs to work his butt off on both ends of his game. He needs to play defense - maybe it's too late for him to learn, but he will need to play D in both Europe or the NBA. On the offensive end, he needs to learn to play within himself, under control, and with a purpose other than making the SC Top 10 plays of the day. For every hot dog move he pulls off, he missed on 3 or 4. That's a turnover machine, right there.

What I have never understood is why Troy gets a pass after the Luke Fischer incident and the failed drug tests. Recruiting "promises" made by Crean??

Are you talking about the autographed basketball thing? Not sure how involved in that Troy was, but clearly Fischer was hurt by it, and no action was taken by the people in charge of this team. And Troy was a part of it, either by commission or omission. Leaders lead, always. Followers follow, always.

There was a Luke Fischer incident?

Yes. I'm not going to say it's 100% factual, but a few people have leaked some reasons as to why he transferred. Troy stole a ball that Luke had the entire team sign for his grandpa. Also, Troy locked Luke out of their room for some Antonio Allen specials (for those that don't keep up with our football team, that means drugs).

This came from people close to the team. Coach never did anything to discipline Troy

Sure he did.  Troy stood in the corner for about 5 minutes....eventually.  That counts, right?

As has been said, outside of jumping/dunking he doesn't have much.  He's not a good ball handler or shooter, and some of his out of control drives get bailed out by circus shots falling.  He doesn't make good decisions with the ball, and he has more than enough athleticism to be able to lockdown anyone on defense but he's pretty weak on that end.  So much of his game is about being more athletic than anyone, he's more of an athlete than a basketball player.  Vic worked his tail off to become a basketball player by his junior year, Troy hasn't made that transition nearly to the extent Vic did.

Crean did make a comment that Troy isn't in the gym as much as the others so that's probably part of it.

And that's a real shame, and a puzzler, given that the guy most in his ear is Uncle Boo, who knows what it takes to make it and succeed at the next level.

I'd say it's clear he isn't going to make the breakthrough in college barring sudden changes. I don't think it's too late to learn, just no one has taught him the right way. If he had gone to UNC or Louisville like he almost did, he would already be playing on Sunday. Well, I guess it's the NBA so playing every day of the week.

Some guys are great in that Will Sheehey role. Not the focal point but s great 3-4th option and one that will give you 4-5 big games a year which is what you need for they role.

For that I am fine with him

If I were drafting a team, NBA or College, I take Troy over Sheehey all day.

Troy still has a lot to improve on though but Sheehey as a Jr. was valuable and seemed better than he really was.

That would be 100% true IF Troy was coachable - and if he had a coach. Not sure either is really the case. Sheehey's antics were all about swagger and firing up the team/crowd. I personally see Troy as selfish and looking to get his.
