If we land phinisee as along term plan, do you think we still go hard after Garland? Could we get both or is one or the other? Not sure Phinisee will be as ready as Garland. Guessing Garlands comments about getting his degree would limit them from being together unless they could both be in the same backcourt....

We will be looking for multiple guards in the class so I don't see how one would preclude the other.

Aren't Phinisee and Garland both point guards? When was the last time IU got commitments from two point guards in the same class let alone two top ranked ones? That's what I'm getting at.

Both Blackmon and Rojo said they wanted to play point in college. Having Rojo signed up didn't stop Blackmon from recommitting. Although it seems every guard wants to play the point in college but that's obviously not how it works out.

Those are both shooting guards and they knew they weren't going to play the point considering we had an All-American starting point guard...

Phinisee and garland are both true point guards and IU doesn't have a solidified true point so the opportunity is enormous for one of them, just don't know how we make them both happy enough to get them both unless Phinisee is ok with secondary minutes

Not a lot of susbstance; primarily a recap of last night's junior-senior all-star game at New Albany.  

Phinisee said he’ll be back at Purdue next week for team camp, and at Indiana for the same reason on June 24. His recruiting picture has been altered a bit this spring by coaching changes.

Indiana’s new coaching staff has continued to recruit him hard since Archie Miller replaced Tom Crean.  Phinisee said a planned visit to Ohio State was cancelled due to this week’s departure of Thad Matta.

Purdue, Indiana push hard for in-state standouts

Then there is another Indiana Junior All-Star, Robert Phinisee, who also has offers from Purdue and Indiana, plus Butler, Virginia, Ohio State and more.

Last season the McCutcheon standout averaged 21.7 points, 6.8 assists and 5.6 rebounds to help his team to a sectional championship. In 2016, he helped McCutcheon to a state runner-up finish.

Purdue has recruited Phinisee, the state’s No. 2 prospect in the Class of 2018, hard for a while. IU is making a strong push for Phinisee behind assistant coach Bruiser Flint as well as Miller.

“We’re just building a relationship,” Phinisee says.  Miller visited Phinisee in April and provided a film session to show how Phinisee would fit in with Miller’s system, which includes plenty of ball-screen action for guards.

Phinisee will attend team camps at Purdue and IU this month.

· Phinisee impressive on Saturday: One of IU’s 2018 recruiting targets was impressive on Saturday afternoon under the bright lights in Assembly Hall.

McCutcheon’s Robert Phinisee, a top 100 player nationally, went head-to-head with Musa Jallow and Bloomington North and won comfortably despite being down a couple of key players.

Phinisee can score in a variety of ways, can handle the ball and get to the basket effectively and is also a very solid passer. While his athleticism might not be elite, it’s going to be good enough to make him a very good college player. On Saturday, Phinisee told Inside the Hall that IU, Purdue, Ohio State, Virginia and Butler are the main schools involved in his recruitment.

On whether there’s anything new recruiting wise:

“Not really. Ohio State, I’m gonna visit them Monday, so that’s all right now.”

On whether Ohio State was involved prior to the coaching change in Columbus:

“Yeah they were. I was gonna visit them sometime in June. With the coaching change, I’m still just gonna visit. Nothing’s really changed that much.”

On the contact level from the IU coaching staff:

“Oh yea, it’s a lot. Probably, maybe five times a week. Coach (Bruiser) Flint and coach (Archie) Miller. It’s pretty frequent.”

On a timetable to cut his list:

“I’d say definitely after July, the live period. Maybe sometime in August or September, so I’ll see how things are.”

On the schools expressing the most interest besides Indiana:

“Purdue — the Butler coaching staff hasn’t reached out to me yet — but Virginia, and Ohio State, are pretty frequent.”

On if he plans to take official visits beginning in the fall:

“Yeah, after July I’m gonna talk with my mom and see if any new schools are in, see what we can do and see where I’ll set my five officials.”

On how much Indiana will watch him in July:

“They say they’re gonna try to have somebody at my game, every single game in July. We’ll see how it goes.”

On what he wants to get out of the next couple of months:

“Really just improving my game. Keep getting in the weight room, keep getting stronger and just doing everything so I can be ready for the next level.”

On the message from the IU coaching staff:

“They say (Josh) Newkirk, that’s their only pure point. Then they have the 2017 class coming in. They want a guard in 2018 to come in and run the team. That’s their message.”

On what schools he’s visited multiple times besides Indiana:

“Purdue, Butler multiple times, and then Ohio State, I went to a game this season, and then Xavier and Louisville.”

On what he likes about Virginia:

“Just the coaching staff. When I went and visited them — I visited them in October — just the coaching staff, I know they’re a great program, been one of the top teams in the ACC the last two or three years. I have a good relationship with coach (Tony) Bennett and coach (Brad) Soderberg, so I like them a lot.”

On what he’ll be looking for in a school:

“If I do go far away from home, how comfortable I am with the players, the coaching staff and just everybody around the basketball program. Just player development, and just really, making me a better person.”

On what his conversations with the IU coaching staff are like:

“Mostly about basketball, but it’s really just building a relationship. Seeing how I am as a kid, that’s what they want to see, so if I do go there, they know how good of a kid I am. Just really building a relationship. That’s the main thing.”

I'd say the staff contacting him 5 times a week and telling him they're going to have somebody at every single one of his games in July qualifies as "prioritizing".

We seem to be going after bigger fish, but his comments on IU make it sound like we're putting solid effort into his recruitment. I think we've cooled on Jallow though.

Yeah, missed the "besides Indiana" part when he mentions schools prioritizing him. Glad to see. Jallow though, seems like a great get early on that would be a beast down the line for us.
