Holding Coaches Accountable

Recommended Posts

Tom Crean is an enabler, a cheerleader, and a talker.  He is not a doer.  He is not a leader.   He is not commanding of respect.  At best, he is demanding of it, and that'll never work.

Here's the bottom line, folks.  We all know the one guy who would be the universal fix to what ails the basketball program is Brad Stevens.  Our problem is he's the coach of the Boston Celtics.   I think he'll coach in college again someday, but have no idea if that'll be 1 year or 15 years from now.   An interesting list would be who we'd be happy with moving forward.   I think it's obvious Crean isn't the long term answer, even without all of the off-court garbage.   So...if not Stevens.....who?

Crean absolutely needs to be held accountable because he's lost the locker room.  Too many soft punishments.  Too much enabling.  Not enough expectation and too much justification of everything from losses to mis-behavior.  I hate what's become of that program, and it makes me sick.  All that can sate me at this point is wondering what's next because at least that gives us the infamous "hope."

I support the team no matter who the coach is.That's been really hard to do for about 20 years now.
Hopefully the administration will figure it out someday but I'm not holding my breath.

I'm starting to think its the entire administration that needs to change. We haven't won since 1987. That makes me feel we have an internal problem as well.

Crean's quotes from an IU press release on 05/02/08 following the dismissals of DeAndre Thomas, Jamarcus Ellis and Eli Holman...

“Our staff if going to ensure that anyone who attends this University and wears the Indiana uniform will make this privilege among their highest priorities and not treat the opportunity as an entitlement,” added Crean. “We fully expect our student-athletes to accept the responsibilities academically, athletically and socially that come with representing one of the top programs in college basketball history.”

Has the coaching staff lived up to their own standards listed above?

Gnarly Tim with the KABOOM!

Have fun on your "boycott" I'll be cheering this team on this year just like I have every other year. People forget that there are still fine young men on this team that deserve our respect and deserve to have full support of this amazing fan base. Not "fans" boycotting the team.

You're entitled to your opinion. I respect it. Just dont try to paint me as a someone trying to short change these young men, or call me less of a fan than you. Some of us have have different levels of tolerance for things such as these. I had your exact same attitude the previous 10 times that something similar or much worse had happened. This was my tipping point. I tip my cap to you for being able to completely toss it aside and continue to have a positive view of our program. I'm just not able anymore. I have a huge problem with people who call themselves leaders, yet continually pass the buck when things go awry. I have a huge problem with "leaders" who preach on zero tolerance and accountability, yet exempt themselves from these same standards. Its literally no different than our current state of politics. Not a single instance of indiscretion has been DIRECTLY CTC's fault. BUT......There is a reason that these things seem to keep happening here at IU, more so than at other basketball programs, and that reason is that a culture has been established (or one hasn't been established by year 8). I love IU and all that I was raised to believe IU once stood for. This is not the Indiana that I can be proud of. We have a very bad image nationally. We are a program that seems to be out of control. We have guys constantly breaking the law,  and a delusional fanbase that seems to think it deserves to be mentioned in the same breath as the UK's, UNC's, KU's, Duke's, UCONN's, etc. You mentioned our amazing fanbase. I agree with you. We do have an amazing fan base.  I also think that we deserve better than the product we are being force fed. I also cant stomach supporting a coach that constantly blames players mistakes in the post game interviews and players off court actions, then immediately preaches about not having leaders and that kids need to be held accountable. If CTC is a man of such morality, as the Indy Star claims, then I would think he would start holding himself accountable. If he really cared about laying the right foundation, he would include himself in this zero tolerance policy. Its his team and its his program. Therefore, the state of IU basketball is squarely on his shoulders. He should have resigned. He's clearly not the man for the job.

Any IU beat writer have the cajones to cite this quote to CTC?  I genuinely wonder if there is a fear among journalists, that their credentials might be revoked, if they were to embarrass coach like that. That'd be embarrassing for him.

They may have feared The General but I can't believe they're quaking in their boots over CTC.

Great post with a lot of great points. Sorry if my post came across as me trying to make you feel like I thought I was a better fan then you. I actually agree with most of your points in your post. I just have a soft spot for the players and will always support them regardless of the guy coaching the team. I hope sooner rather then later this team turns it around, and you and I can root on IU basketball together.

Excellent posts from all, and it shows our true love for this school and program. We all want to win and with class and have players who represent the university well; all the while graduating. Limping into the tournament playing our worst ball of the year. Boorish press conferences asking reporters what we should have done. Players getting busted for weed and alchohol. Not one senior on the team to recognize on Senior night. Is this what the university, fans, and alumni expect or accept from Crean? The writing has been on the wall for at least two years, and we still have an administration discussing his coaching accumin. Embarrassing!
