2016-17 Basketball Schedule

Recommended Posts

Tough schedule. Kansas and Louisville will be difficult. Butler should be down a bit. Home game ACC is nice. Virginia??? Big East likely a road game.

I believe UVA played at Ohio State this year, so they're likely to get a home game next year.

Boston College, Syracuse, NC State, Duke, UNC, Virginia Tech, Pitt all played home games this past season.

Think I narrowed down the Gavitt Tipoff options to. I'd like the best in this group and UNC or Syracuse.

@ DePaul, Georgetown, Seton Hall or Xavier.

I, or a mod will keep this first post updated as the games roll in.

11/11 vs Kansas @ Pearl Harbor (Armed Forces Classic)

11/22 vs IPFW @ Fort Wayne Memorial Coliseum

12/17 vs Butler @ Bankers Life Fieldhouse (Crossroads Classic)

12/31 vs Louisville @ Bankers Life Fieldhouse

*B1G/ACC Challenge (Home)

*Gavitt Tipoff Games (@ Big East)

I like seeing tough preconference games instead of so many cupcakes.

Even if they lose, I think it will toughen those guys up

The Gavitt Games isn't a definite. In the 8 year deal, each of the B1G schools are guaranteed 4 games in the 8 year period. 6 schools didn't play last year(Michigan St, Ohio St, Wisconsin, NW, Minnesota, Purdon't) which leaves 2 spots for the other 8.

So basically B1G teams will play in half of the games over 8 years with 8 B1G teams playing in 5? (I think my math is correct on that)

(Apologies for a really long post.  Bottom line we should have a really good non-con schedule that has me a bit giddy)

We could potentially have the non-con schedule most of us have been wanting for several years.  The losses in Maui cost us seeding more than our opening BTT loss to Michigan.  It hurt losing but also impacted our RPI due to the competition.  Instead of a matchup with Vandy (RPI 62) we got St. John's (RPI 245) and then UNLV (RPI 102) instead of UNLV (RPI 147).  Next season we're playing guaranteed games against KU and UL instead of a tourney.  Here is a glance at games that have been announced already.

  • Armed Forces Classic:  JBPHH (Nov. 11)  Opponent:  Kansas (RPI - 1, KenPom - 4)
  • (Possible)  Gavitt Tipoff: (See below)
  • Fort Wayne Memorial Coliseum (Nov. 22)  Opponent:  IPFW (RPI - 71, KenPom - 133)
  •  B1G-ACC Challenge:  Home game (See below for possible opponents)
  • Crossroads Classic:  Bankers Life Fieldhouse (Dec. 17)  Opponent:  Butler (RPI - 56, KenPom - 35)
  • Bankers Life Fieldhouse (Dec 31)  Opponent:  Louisville (RPI - 17, KenPom - 10)

Gavitt Tipoff:  As stated above B1G teams are guaranteed 4 games over the 8 year contract with the possibilty of a 5th game for 8 B1G teams.  MSU, pu, Wiscy, OSU, Northwestern, and Minnesota did not play in the 2015 version of the Gavitt Tipoff series.  Seton Hall and Butler did not participate for the Big East in last season's games.  If IU does participate possible games include

  • @Xavier (RPI - 7, KenPom - 12)
  • Seton Hall (RPI - 19, KenPom - 23)
  • @Georgetown (RPI - 106, KenPom - 64)

B1G/ACC Challenge:  IU was on the road this past season with the Debacle in Durham against the Dukies and should have a marquee opponent at home next season.  My uneducated guess for IU's opponent next season include

  • UNC (RPI - 5, KenPom - 2)
  • Duke (RPI - 8, KenPom - 14)
  • Syracuse (RPI - 72, KenPom - 22)

IU will have at minimum two quality opponents in the top 25ish range in Kansas and Louisville at neutral sites.  There is a real possibility to add a third with a home game against a top ACC team in the challenge.  A fourth isn't out of the question with a possible road game against a Big East team.  The Crossroads Classic will give another opportunity for a quality win against Butler on a neutral court.  The game at the Fort Wayne Memorial Coliseum against an instate mid-major in IPFW seems like a good idea to give fans in that region a chance to see the Hoosiers.  It's also good for a solid RPI game as opposed to a 200+ RPI cupcake at Assembly Hall.  That's a total of three neutral site games, one home game, and at least one true road game.  I've been an advocate of a tougher non-con schedule than we've played in the recent past.  I'm happy with this schedule but we still need to resist the urge to play a handful of those RPI 250+ home games.  If we could 2 games against opponents in the RPI 100ish, 4 in the RPI 150ish, and a couple against RPI 200+ we will have a really good non-con SOS that could help our seeding next season.

Edit:  I would also like to see us continue to play mid to low majors in the surrounding states with an emphasis on playing teams trending up.  Here are a few examples of teams who had pretty good seasons that we've played recently.

  • (2015)  IPFW (RPI - 71, KenPom - 133)
  • (2015)  Morehead State (RPI - 127, KenPom - 124)
  • (2013)  Evansville (RPI - 93, KenPom - 68)
  • (2013)  Oakland (RPI - 117, KenPom - 82)
  • (2012)  Ball State (RPI - 179, KenPom - 150

B1G/ACC prediction = Home against Syracuse

Gavitt Challenge prediction = @ Xavier

I could see IU getting Syracuse at home next season, at UNC the filling year, and then Duke at home after that.

I have no idea on the Gavitt Tipoff games. I'm not even sure IU will play in it next season. I would like to see some neutral site games against Georgetown or one of the NE schools at MSG. That would be nice for some of the alumni in those areas to get to see the Hoosiers.

And along the exact opposite lines, I would love to see us add a Pac-12 event so west coast fans have a chance to see the Hoosiers.

Plus, I think most of those games would be baller. We have a great football relationship, we need a basketball one.

A few years back there was an agreement for an B1G/Pac-12 challenge but it fell through, not sure why. I do agree that would be nice to have the Hoosiers playing on the left coast.

My favorite part of the Tourney is real teams from every conference playing each other. I would love to see an Oregon v. Indiana game, it would just be two teams competing to see who can play less defense.

Thank Mother Football. The agreement was supposed to encompass multiple sports, but the Pac-12 went to 9 nine conference games and they wanted some flexibility in scheduling and ensuring 6 home games/year.

I wish they would have kept the agreement for other sports.

I think a PAC 12 vs B1G would be a great idea. The conferences are similar. Top heavy with a few bottom feeders. I do feel our middle teams are better which is what makes us a better conference, but even for a Oregon vs IU, Zona vs MSU, Utah vs Maryland, USC vs Michigan, Oregon State vs Wisconsin, Washington vs Ohio State and so forth I see a lot of potentially great match ups.

This what I've been talking about with friends for the past few years. There are too many talented teams in the state and in the surrounding states for us to play so many cupcakes. I know the cupcake schedule comes down to money but I'd like to see us play Evansville, IUPUI, IPFW, Valpo, and Ball State every couple of years if not every year. Those teams would be better competition then the cupcakes we usually play

And of course the B1G is starting a 9 game conference schedule in football this year too.

Agree, the money also goes back into some of the local basketball programs. Maybe we'll see more of it as the program stabilizes/begins to progress? I also wouldn't mind seeing a game in or around Colorado in a few years.
