Walking Boot of Doom Posted April 14, 2016 Posted April 14, 2016 Why take a flier in the age of the grad transfer? I would think you would want to limit taking fliers while recruiting at Indiana. In the back of my mind, I wonder if Crean is just looking to fill the end of roster with quality kids that won't fuss about not getting PT. Better team chemistry, etc. idk. I don't think that'd be a very Crean like move. At some point, we usually see all 13 scholarship players, plus some walk-ons, contribute. Priller is one of the few examples I can think of of a scholarship player who wasn't injured not getting minutes at all. Quote
BtownBanner6 Posted April 14, 2016 Posted April 14, 2016 Gelon has performed nowhere near the guys he keeps getting compared to (Roth, Hornsby, Z). Shoulda let him walk on. That scholly is too valuable to sit the end of the bench. Jumped the gun IMO. Well as long as MSB is on the team he won't be on the end. MikeRoberts 1 Quote

Yes, the higher ranked guys are better bets but anyone can point those guys out. The experts haven't even seen Gelon to have an opinion. Recruiting rankings are for high school mommies to email Evan Daniel and Jerry Meyer about We'll have to agree to disagree. Scouts aren't perfect, there will always be error in the rankings because they cannot watch enough of each kid to definitely say who is 40 and who is 50, or who is 120 instead of 130. It's not a science. We always see people saying a lower ranked recruit Crean went after is underrated or a "diamond in the rough", and it happens with every lower/unranked recruit he goes after, but there is a reason players like Oladipo make such a good story. Gelon could end up out performing his ranking, I'm not writing him off but I'm far from sold. That's coming from a guy that thought posters were writing Hartman off too early, and had said he could be a solid contributor his junior/senior season. Quote

JSHoosier Posted April 14, 2016 Posted April 14, 2016 One thing I'll add is that I'm closer to the group that doesn't think Gelon will do much of anything, and again that's coming from a person that thought Hartman was being written off too soon. MadAboutIndiana Posted April 14, 2016 Posted April 14, 2016 I don't think he's gonna do a whole bunch at IU, but I think the Hornsby comparison is spot on. What's wrong with signing a guy like that ya know? ALASKA HOOSIER 1 Quote
X-Hoosier Posted April 14, 2016 Posted April 14, 2016 Is he at least a 1000th of the shooter Steph Curry is? Sent from my SAMSUNG-SM-G900A using BtownBanners mobile app Quote
HoosierAloha Posted April 14, 2016 Posted April 14, 2016 When did he become a lights out shooter? For every 5/7 game from deep there were 2-3 games he went 1/6. I'm not expecting Grant to contribute much as an underclassman but if he could become a knockdown shooter as a junior and play adequate defense while keeping players heads on straight off the court he could fill a much needed role. I guess we can only wait and see. I do hope he is at IU for four years though. Sent from my iPhone using BtownBanners ALASKA HOOSIER 1 Quote

MikeRoberts Posted April 14, 2016 Posted April 14, 2016 Once a year isn't close to enough. They can't see all of the guys enough to be able to differentiate between them once you get to a certain point in a class. This 2016 class seems extremely deep/loaded. So where Grant ultimately is ranked--whether it's 108 or 158 or 358. why should that have any meaning? I respect the job they do etc etc but it seems to me that it's just fodder for fans to talk about in the off season. Who gives a rat's behind about high school once it's over? Lol Personally? I think Crean was so shaken by the Devin Davis thing, along with the other players that crapped on his culture, that he went and found another Hulls type who absolutely bleeds IU basketball--doesn't hurt that he's lights out. I in no way believe the other aspects of his game are Big Ten level...yet. I just find it odd there's so much second guessing. Seems to me like just the kind of kid Crean has had good teams with. Remember when everyone counted on having Hartman's scholarship open up?....... Gelon doesn't bleed IU, more like blue and white as he grew up a diehard duke fan MartintheMopMan 1 Quote

Come on 33 minutes ago, MikeRoberts said: How many games as a senior in high school did he score 0 points? Looks like Nick Zeisloft is 13th all time for Lyons Township scoring leaders. FYI...Niego is 4th all time. Nick's best season in HS was 20th best in school history at 439 points. His junior year he scored 323 points Grant scored 404 points his senior year, and 402 his junior year. I have no idea how Grant will do as an IUBB designated shooter, but his high school stats are more than comparable to Nick Zeisloft's. MadAboutIndiana 1 Quote

WayneFleekHoosier Posted April 14, 2016 Posted April 14, 2016 Very similar stats from what I can find. Might be exactly the type of player Crean hopes Grant becomes (ziesloft clone). He is 6'5". Learned from research that Grant's favorite player was Jon Scheyer and he hopes to play in the NBA someday. Quote
WayneFleekHoosier Posted April 14, 2016 Posted April 14, 2016 Hornsby was an absolute stud in HS. Not a good comparison. Look up his stats. Ziesloft seems like a fair comparison though relative to high school. Quote
Bowhunter Posted April 14, 2016 Posted April 14, 2016 I get the giving a guy a chance for your last player coming off the bench, but this makes two guys riding the pine imo Quote

The point is, he seems to be a prideful kid/one that will spill it all out there. Not surprising he wasn't an IU fan growing up. Would you have been? ThompsonHoosier 1 Quote
