Men's Basketball Reunion

Recommended Posts

Didn't see this posted anywhere else but thought it was worthy of its own thread.  There are some great pictures of the IU Basketball reunion from this weekend on the Indiana Basketball Facebook page.  It is great to see Hoosiers from all eras come together to celebrate the program.  Looked like a great event.

I remember a certain conversation on a certain former basketball player's radio show earlier this year about how IU under Crean isn't doing a thing for former players of the program.  If I had to guess he won't bring that up today.

Is there a chance that because he brought it up a year ago that there now is a renewed effort to do the right thing?

OK, somebody go through that pic and name them. Several I dont recognize.

Most are 2002 boys. I would say 70% which is a high number for a reunion. Sean Kline packed on some weight. Lewis looks good. So does Hornsby.

I thought the 2002 team was the featured group for the reunion, or maybe they had a separate get together.  The reunion should be done at least once every 4 years.  Players should be encouraged to come back to campus as often as they can. Bringing the current players together with Slick Leonard, Jeffries, and all former players is good for teaching the history and expectations of the program.  I would love to have more players serve as mentors to the kids that might have never seen them play.  It would be good for our players to look up what these players accomplished in their careers.

I hope it had a lasting effect on our freshman.

Maybe, but Crean also did this his first summer as IU coach so I don't think he did this because of anything Dakich or Landon said in that conversation.  He also has brought back and honored a number of championship teams before games in addition to having a large group of players at Hoosier Hysteria for multiple years.

That picture above is mostly 2002 guys but that was not from the event and must be a dinner from earlier in the weekend.  Hopefully this link works but you can see guys from every era here http://www.iuhoosiers.com/view.gal?id=181313

At least one player from every B1G and National Championship team from 1953 to present was in attendance for the reunion.

I don't think it has much to do with Crean at all.  He is more than likely very very busy with coaching and recruiting, and I highly doubt that he is responsible for saying hey lets bring these guys back to IU, although i'm sure he signs off on pre-game stuff or whatever.  I'm not certain, but there are probably a few people in the athletics department who work on "fan experience" or target legacy initiative type events.

I'd say if there are any negative comments about not bringing in past players, that blame should go on the athletics staff in general, and not just Crean.  I, for one, would like him to focus on coaching and recruiting, and not worry about pre-game feel-goodies.

I agree with you on what his focus should be. I think you somewhat mis characterize who ultimately decides to have events like this. I am sure Crean had a big hand in it. If they did this it was ultimately his decision even if he didn't work on the nitty gritty details of it.

Crean has gotten criticism for this in the past so worth noting what he has done.

I completely agree, thank you for being the voice of reason.

I think where you give the coach credit, and the AD too, is for creating a culture that values the history of the program. Not every coach does that. While Crean might not be sitting in the brainstorm session discussing the next "honor the past" event, he's helped create a culture that puts an emphasis on it for his administrative staff.

To me he doesn't embrace the history as well. He always seems angry at Hoosier Hysteria when it is being talked about. Last year though I think he was just angry period for whatever reason. He wouldn't even put on a pair of candy stripes. I just think he doesn't embrace like people would want him to. He seems to only embrace his players. And toy never hear from the teams his 1st 3 years.

If you're talking about Crean you are totally wrong.

You clearly have not been paying attention the past 8 years.
