Um, ok. What else is he supposed to say? Not saying that it isn't true, but I AM saying I am suspicious. Crean may not be the big, bad boogey man, but IMO, he's also not the answer to any question that involves #IUBB.

This isn't a personal attack. You stated that they did zero due diligence prior to signing Hoetzel. Without some kind of proof, this is a statement that I believe is highly questionable.

i didn't say ZERO! I said due diligence??? Yes, they didn't do enough in my opinion. Crean never saw him in live game action. I'm sure he talked to coaches and watched film. How well did he get to know the Hoetzels in 2 weeks? Among other things. It was a reach like Holt, April, and Priller. Sometimes they pay off, sometimes they don't.

Sorry, you said they never scouted him in a game prior to signing him. Are you getting this from somewhere? I never heard this.

Wayne, I am certain they saw him while looking at Goodluck. Maybe he impressed at those times.

not fully true. They scouted Goodluck IN GAME primarily through AAU. The developed a relationship with WM coach in the process. That coach recommended his new player to coach Crean. He signed before WM season began. Yes he saw him in practice, not live game action, prior to commitment.

It was a big gamble that didn't pay off. M

I have some issues with Coach Crean, but the recruitment and then transfer of Mad Max is not one of them.

Wish he would have stayed and thought he could have grown into a Sheehey type player, but this clearly was his decision and I wish him the best of luck.

My 9 year old daughter is going to be really upset. She loves Mad Max.

yes, ask Pap or whoever. It was in his commitment stories. When the WM coach recommended Max to Crean he grabbed him from the dorm to come shoot for Crean. Crean like what he saw. Within a week or 2 Max came on visit to IU and committed prior to the WM season beginning. Crean didn't know about Max until the WM coach recommended him.

Crean offered Will Sheehey a scholarship before ever seeing him play at Sagemont, and was alerted to him because of his more highly-touted AAU teammate Fab Melo (also a teammate at Sagemont). Will was offered in October before the season started.

And the idea that scouting Goodluck during AAU games sufficient is silly. AAU games are garbage. You learn way more about a player watching them practice and talking to coaches then you do from some ridiculous AAU games.

Whether it was his decision to leave or not, our program is becoming laughable in the eyes of the college basketball world. Multiple transfers at year end are becoming a guarantee at IU. This is no way to build a consistent winning program. Crean in not Calipari. He can't keep replacing players. Needs to be taken care of.

Indiana freshman forward Max Hoetzel intends to transfer from Indiana, IU Athletics announced Friday. The news was first broken by CBSSports' Jon Rothstein. During his freshman campaign, Hoetzel played in 31 games, averaging 7.7 minutes, 2.4 points and 1.3 rebounds per game. With his transfer, Indiana is now at the scholarship limit instead of being oversigned, allowing for the two 2016 signees to come to Bloomington on scholarship in the fall. Below is the official release, via IU Athletics:

Bloomington, Ind. -- Indiana University men’s basketball coach Tom Crean has announced that freshman forward Max Hoetzel has requested a release from his athletic scholarship to transfer to a program where he can compete for more playing time.

“We were always impressed with Max’s upside and potential but unfortunately in his view it did not turn into the extended minutes he wanted,” said IU Coach Tom Crean. “He would like to find a clear cut opportunity to play more and we hope he finds that. He is a hard worker who we hope will fulfill his potential and have the chance to play closer to his family.”

Hoetzel, a 6-8 forward from Calabassas, California, played in 31 games and averaged 7.7 minutes and 2.4 points per game.

“I loved my time here at Indiana and can’t thank Coach Crean enough for this opportunity,” said Hoetzel. “I want to find a school where I can have a bigger impact on the court. Hopefully, it will be somewhere my family can see me play more often.”

He will continue to have use of the team’s facilities and academic support during his remaining time at IU.

I am truly surprised because Max was the guy nobody but IU and Crean wanted. I figured he'd be with us for four full years.

You may be right but i think there are plenty of schools out there that he could fit into nicely

I know right?

I remember everyone laughing at Duke last year when Semi Ojeleye and Alex Murphy transferred!

And Maryland when they had Seth Allen, Shaquille Cleare, Nick Faust, Charles Mitchell, and Roddy Peters transfer! It really showed in their youth this year. Total bubble team.

From an interview Alex did w/ Hoetzel's W&MA coach Chris Sparks about 11 months ago. This provides pretty much all the information we need to kill this discussion.

ITH: His recruitment kind of came out of nowhere last fall. A year ago at this time, I wouldn’t have known who he was and then all of the sudden, Indiana offers him and he commits to Indiana. Once he got to you, how did things progress?

CS: Initially, it was Utah, San Diego and a bunch of schools out west, Washington State, that were recruiting him. I think what happened was the team, and the fortunate thing we have is, as many good players as we have on the team, coach (Tom) Crean was recruiting Goodluck (Okonoboh) and he saw this kid and said, ‘wow, this kid can really shoot it.’ And he was able to get a decent evaluation off of that because of the kids he was competing against in practice. And then he came back again and saw him again and his recruiting started to pick up at that point with some different people coming in whether it was UConn. Florida was another school, coach (Billy) Donovan had been up. I give coach Crean and coach (Kenny) Johnson a lot of credit because he kind of saw him first because he kind of identified him and saw that this kid could really be something eventually and play at that level. I think he’s going to do really well there and like I said, by the midpoint of our year, people started to think, this kid is going to be a good player at Indiana.

ITH: The first time Crean watched him, Max said you got him out of his dorm and he did some shooting?

CS: He’d worked out for a hour or a hour and 15 minutes and coach Crean got stuck with his flight. I ended up pulling him out of that and then he worked out for another hour for coach. My opinion, being around coach Crean, he recruited Goodluck and he did a really great job with Goodluck and then the experience with Max, I think he’s done a terrific job in his evaluations. Just look some of the kids he’s had through the program whether it’s been Victor (Oladipo) or other kids. He’s had some high profile kids, but he’s also had kids that not a lot of people know about and aren’t the ranked guys. He kind of sees what they’re going to be to play in his program.
