Big Ten Outside the NCAA

Recommended Posts

I was really surprised that Penn State and Minnesota (defending NIT champ) did not get invites to NIT, CBI or CIT. Both had winning records overall for the season. Even Michigan should have rated an invite somewhere.

Illinois (3 seed in NIT) is the only B1G team getting any post-season bid other than the NCAA.

Penn State was invited to the CBI again this year but declined. Minnesota also declined.

I don't know how long they've been doing this, but the NIT automatically qualifies teams that won their regular season conference title. It severely limits the number of major conference teams that get invites.

Obviously: 1) My research was limited to looking at the brackets

                  2) I never thought any other Big Ten team would turn down such a bid. I guess we started something last year. I do think it's a mistake on Penn State's part, however.

Well each team has to pay their pay for the CBI, unlike the Big Dance and the NIT. So I think its just an extra expense that people are unwilling to pay

If you have a young team like NW you have to take the invite to get more practices.  I believe once your seasons over you no longer get the same amount of practice time.
