Potential coaching change suggestions

Recommended Posts

It's not a mess though. There would be a little turnover. I don't think anyone would leave with Crean. Guys aren't going to sit out an entire season to follow Crean somewhere, especially given that he wouldn't land somewhere better. But even if that did happen, then the new coach would most likely bring guys as well.

There would definitely be an "adjustment" year, but it would mostly be hitting the ground running.

I hope so. I'm still not sold that Crean is on the way out if we don't make the tournament. I honestly don't think Glass will cave given what has gone on. Just my opinion. I think it's one of those no win situations as an AD.

At the risk of coming off as argumentative (not my intent), why would IU want a coach that hasn't won "at least one National Champ with all the talent he has coached"? Don’t we already have one of those?

At this point, I’ve resigned myself that our situation is what it is, and we just have to ride it out, at least for the time being.

If/when we do make a change, I’d like to see Shaka Smart at IU. My only thought is that he has turned down several job offers to stay at VCU. He’s the kind of guy that could really make something happen here, IMO.

I agree. Matta isn't on my list of coaches. My point is that he would leave his football school to come to Indiana.

The intriguing one to me is Billy Donovan. I don't know if he'd make the leap or not, but he's sort of in that range where Izzo was the last several years, where if he's going to ever leave where he's at he probably needs to do it in the next 5-10 years. He'll be 50 next year, and while that's still fairly young in coaching, he'll need to decide soon whether he's a "Florida-lifer" or not.

We know he's flirted with UK in the past and even took the Orlando Magic job for a bit, so he's open to leaving Florida.

I'm going to guess that before it's said and done, Donovan ends up in the NBA or at one of the IU, UNC, Duke, Kansas, UK, UCLA jobs.

ANYBODY but Richard Pitino, PLEASE!!! I cannot stand that guy from his physical appearance to his glib-crap speech. Tubby Smith is a far better coach than The Pits Jr. and Minnesota will regret the decision within a year or two.

If we're going to cannibalize the B1G, Matta at one time said this was his dream job when he left Butler. I don't think he could be pried out of OSU with 10 crowbars, but if we're going to dream, let's dream big.

I haven't seen Jim O'Brien's name mentioned. He had a lot of success recruiting in B1G when with OSU and got a raw deal there, from which he has been cleared. I know he's old, but I was hoping we'd go after him for our last two hires....

And...I have not yet given up on Crean. If Fischer was still here instead of Wisconsin-homesick at Marquette (thank God he didn't choose Ryan's Grinches) we'd be in the B1G title talk mix now. Hopefully, Mr. C. learned from that one.

I am not sure fischer was the caliber player that just having him gets us in the big title talk. I think hanner this year will b better than Fisher would have been for us this year. Imo

I have said this before.....Brad Brownell at Clemson would absolutely fit the mold of the next IU coach. He is young, his teams play smart, and fundamentally sound basketball. They don't turn the ball over and rebound well. Best of all, they actually play defense! Imagine that, a team that actually works to stop someone and not just try to outscore them. By the time we can replace this joke of a coach, this guy is gonna be a star. Remember that you heard it here first. This guy is the next big thing.

I will add a name that I haven't seen yet but I have a gut feeling we are gonna hear alot about in the next couple years and that is Wojo. The guy recruited at a high level for Coach K and is doing the same at Marquette. I think he will be ready to move on to bigger and better things in a year or two. Many years under an all time great and he is a "young" guy I would take a chance at. Anyway I think IU will have many good candidates when the job comes open.

Everything I've heard, including from people I know at Duke, says that he's the heavy favorite to replace Coach K when he retires.

If getting him first is an option, it's one I'd be pretty excited about. But, he may just be biding his time.

You may be right. He hasn't won a game yet I just have that gut feeling Wojo will be a great one. I think if IU landed him the 5* Indiana kids would be checking to see if there were any open roster spots in Btown before visiting anywhere else.

Brownell was born in Evansville, IN and played college ball at Depauw in Greencastle, IN.   At the beginning of his career, he was even the assistant coach for Evansville basketball and then assistant coach for the recently defeated University of Indianapolis Greyhounds.

Wojo may be excellent. But our current coach came from Marquette. A bad sign?

Sure, I still have that bad taste in my mouth but I'm willing to get over it. I think Marquette fans would be pretty bummed if we stole Wojo vs. thowing a party when Crean left.

Brownell. Has he won an ACC title? Just another of the same caliber as we have.

Not even close. Brownell consistently has done more with less where Crean does less with more. Brownell has done well at UNCW, Wright State and Clemson. We could do much worse considering who we have now, although I think we get a big time coach with more pedigree.

You're either overestimating Hanner or underestimating Luke, bc he would have been way better than Hanner. IMO he would have started for us eventually last year and would have made us a tourney team then.
