Potential coaching change suggestions

Recommended Posts

1. Stevens

2. Donovan

3. Marshall

That would be my list. Stevens would have to be top priority.

That is my wish list, but I am not convinced any of them will leave their current jobs. I heard Marshall say last year that he really likes WS. He may not like it as much knowing Baker and others are leaving, but I am sure he had offers to leave last year and didn't.

He can be a big dog in the MVC and make the tournament every year, or slug it out in the Big 10. He brings in players with size and strength. They may not be 5 star players, but they know how to play. Marshall is the most likely of the 3.  I hope his methods would transfer to the Big 10.

Stevens is still building a team in Boston. He will have another year to make progress. I think he is a year away from any decision on his possible availability. Can we wait a year to see if he is going to be interested or available? We might have to if our heart is set on Stevens. What if the Celtics turn it around next year? Would he leave? We can't wait. Any selection committee should include former players. It wouldn't be appropriate, but I would like a current player to represent the team and give the committee what the team would like to see.

none of stevens, hoiberg, bennett or donovan are even somewhat realistic for next year. all of this inconsistency and embarrassment clearly has much of hoosier nation fantasizing. cant blame us for living in the past when the present is so ugly.
speaking of ugly, pamela anderson is straight up repellent these days.

Talk should stop after Stevens and Donovan. I'd consider Marshall, but no one else. I hope guys like Shaka Smart aren't even put on their "raw board". I've said it a few times and I know Hova said it last night, his defense is an overrated gimmick. They don't actually rate out that great defensively when you get into advance statistics. With Jacobson he doesn't have near the consistent success

Archie Miller.

Makes too much sense.

Perfect fit.

No NBA situation nor aspirations.

Fan base would immediately coalesce.

VERY good coach.

Tireless recruiter.

Went to the elite eight last year with a rotation dominated by bigs.

Will win the A10 this year with an undersized team.

Defensive - minded teams.

I don't follow the NBA, but looking at the schedule the Celtics season likely ends April 15th. Right now they are two games out of the 8 spot in the East. Are the Celtics going to have cap space to pursue any big-time free agents (are there any big-time free agents this year?)? Stevens is currently making about $3.7 million per year.

What is the likelihood Stevens leaves the Celtics to come back to Indiana? If the Celtics are not looking at any major talent upgrades to their roster, I could see it happening.

The Celtics are going to suck for a handful of years to come. Unfortunately, in the Eastern Conference, that could mean finishing as high as 6th and making the playoffs.

It all depends on what he wants right now. Does he want to coach at the highest level for one of the premier baseketball organizations in a great city for the long haul, but not have much control over his roster, even if it means not contending for a while, if ever, or does he want to return to the college game, deal with recruiting and selling the program, but have a greater level of control over his team? I feel like when/if he returns to college, it will be for the long haul, so he may not feel like he needs to make such a commitment yet.

Stevens holds all the power in this, because not only does he know we're becoming desperate for him, but he doesn't have to come here anytime soon. Unless he completely forgets how to coach or gets involved in a huge scandal (both unlikely given his nature), the door will always be open for him at Indiana. Brad Stevens may very well end up coaching at IU, but he's young enough that it may not happen for another 20 years.

The Celtics owner has said the team will make "fireworks" this summer. The team has been playing much better after acquiring Isiah Thomas, has a boatload of 1st round picks, and I believe cap space. The problem with Boston is, even though they're an iconic franchise, they've never been a destination for free agents. So, they'll probably need to trade picks for a "star", if one is available.

The caveat to all that is that the owner (Wyc) and Ainge both said they were going to make fireworks last offseason, and it didn't happen. But, they're goal is to improve the roster quickly.

Stevens or Donovan would be great but unrealistic.  I hope they reach out to see of course but not holding my breath.

Realistically I would put my money on Marshall or Archie Miller being the next coach if Crean is fired.

If we don't like the options available, I don't want to just jump ship to jump. Getting a new coach that isn't our forever coach will only delay the process. I want to WIN BIG with this next hire.

Agreed!  I stated this in a thread yesterday.  Any potential new coach should be thought of in this respect: do you want 5-6 years of Coach X or 1-2 years of Coach Crean.

We don't want to hire an average coach just to do it.  This is a key moment for the program and the next coach HAS to be a home run hire.

I'm just curious and really have no information on him, but what about Danny Manning?  I remember him being a hot name last year.  One of my biggest criteria is emphasis on academics.  I think my list would be similar to most...

I think its delusional to consider it realistic that Stevens will leave. That may be a good match, but its a match made in heaven and not on this earth. Celtics have a lot of upside and when they invested in Stevens they knew it would be a long ride. I think we will reach out through back channels and give it a 5% possibility on the off chance his family misses Indiana.

After thinking more heavily about it I would like:

Donovan

Archie Miller

Maybe Marshall but not so high on him

I don't think Hoiberg is realistic, I don't see us pulling Bennett but would like to reach out to him.

I think we would regret not getting Archie Miller if we don't land him. He doesn't get talked about a lot but he is doing fantastic work at Dayton. I would be elated with that hire

And I would like to point out I think it very likely Crean gets canned this year if we can get any of these guys. "It's Indiana" and the money will be there. The atmosphere in Assembly Hall turned down right hostile. Old men booing, middle aged men yelling insults at Crean, college kids cursing and leaving early. I mean, there are talks about boycotting and protesting among students
