YUM is even better

A big issue with building a pro-style stadiums, especially off-campus, comes down to funding. Namely, the tax-payers that might get screwed. I know Lucas-Oil and Yum both were amazing projects and awesome stadiums that had their respective cities abuzz, but the financial burden on the local tax-payers has been super hard and pretty unreasonable (especially YUM).

Here's a new fan's perspective:

A college basketball game should have a college atmosphere. This past Saturday I watched two basketball games: UMD vs. UM, and Wichita State vs. Northern Iowa. WSU v UNI was absolutely electric. The fans are right on the court and very loud. The UMD game left something to be desired. The attendance was there, but it seemed like I was watching an NBA game. You could barely see the fans. UMD, Nebraska, and Illinois (with their recent renovations) all have newer pro style arenas. They are gorgeous, but the atmosphere doesn't compare to the true college venues we see at IU, Duke, UK, or even schools such as Dayton and WSU. College basketball doesn't need a pro atmosphere.

Now, the drawback with Assembly Hall is there is no room for the addition of luxury suites (with the exception of the single box that is going to be installed behind the entrance side basket). Luxury suites are a revenue driver, and help bring in other events. In an ideal world, AH could maintain its student crazy atmosphere with the steep bleachers that reflect sound, but luxury suites could be added. The question is: if a new arena is built how long would it take to make back your investment from the added revenue? I am positive IU wouldn't have any problems selling premium seating for home basketball games, but with the enormous cost of new arenas nowadays, I have no idea if it is worth the investment.

From a player's perspective, I don't think they care about the arena itself. In fact, a player probably prefers playing in a college atmosphere like AH. A player is likely more concerned with the practice/workout facilities, locker rooms, and athlete lodging. I believe the locker rooms are being renovated in AH, so this shouldn't be a problem.

IMO AH suits the needs of the program just fine. If anything, the arena needs more presentation from the outside. Right now driving or walking up it looks desolate. An arena with the history of AH should have a grand entrance and walkway so you know where you are.

I strongly believe part of any future coaching hires require we have some quality facilities in place. I know this is a beaten dead horse but it means a lot in the overall process. The facility lands the coach while the facilities help the coach recruit many of the top players. History and tradition is all good but the above mentioned things are a must to compete.

Are you saying Cook Hall is not a quality facility?

Rupp is a mall. LOL Allen Fieldhouse and Cameron are historically great places and should never be torn down. I have been to serveral games at AFH and that place is an incredible place to watch a basketball game. The Kansas program does an extremely great job in embracing it history and tradition. That's all.

Edit: AFH has has several updates but it seems they will never mess with the building overall structure.

You say THE ASSEMBLY HALL needs torn down but say AFH and Cameron are historically great and should never be torn down. Contradiction much?

Just an opinion but AFH is a better basketball experience than anything we have in the B1G. But if you like new oversized type gyms we would not agree much on gyms. I would like Kansas to join our conference. I think it is a good place for any fan to experience a BB game.

That doesn't address the historic argument at all. The Assembly Hall is as historic as it gets.

Edit: Dude are you a Kansas fan? I usually don't call people out, but you hate Marshall which fits the mold. And now you're gushing over AFH. While talking down about Assembly Hall. Feel free to delete my edit if inappropriate mods

The floor design etc. Is very historic etc. Please don't get me wrong. Yes it is somewhat historic but I have attended a lot of games in a variety of gyms in other conferences etc Their are some good ones out there. Anyway, I am not trying to have a debate etc.

I had that same gut feeling.
