Upset with recruiting?

Recommended Posts

And that's what ShortSpace was talking about. That post has nothing to do with acting like lacking a 5 isn't a big issue. It is saying...

"The sad thing is, even though it would be great we don't even need a 5 star C. We just need a 5 who is 6'10+ that is fundamentally sound that can defend on the post and rebound. Nothing great just a true 5 that can play his role."

"A 5 who is 6'10 and can play his role would be great up until we lose a big game due to our 5 being a role player, or in a bad matchup, etc. Then it will be identified as a recruiting error/coaching failure."

See how he isn't saying that not having a 5 isn't an issue in that post? He's saying that he doesn't think the fanbase would be any more OK with us losing in that hypothetical scenario.

Your probably right but that does not really justify not having one or the other on the roster. Expecting to field a championship level team with neither a 5* or a strong role playing big does reflect a recruiting issue that is fair game for doubts.

Even more so if we repeat this again next year.

Thank you! This is what I'm trying to say. Instead of having these type of kids on our team we wasted scholarships on guys like Jurkin, Capo, Priller, April, Robinson, Abell, etc. And these are not high level rated guys. Why go out of state for kids like these?

Not trying to argue but Stan Robinson was actually highly rated.

Stan started about 50 range in all rankings. Pretty steep drop off in rankings in his one year at Findlay Prep. Dropped to 90-110 in most rankings. Nigel Williams Goss controlled that team.

Decent frosh year for Stan, all things considered but he forgot how to play basketball in the off season. Unbelievable, really.

Not saying we shouldn't sign out of state talent. I would have signed Fischer over Welmer without a doubt. It's going out of state and offering the lower rated guys like Jurkin, Capo, April, Priller, Robinson, etc instead of offering kids in your own backyard like Dunham, McIntosh, Sellers, etc. Why do we do that? You realize those 3 never even received offers from IU? Just blows my mind.

What is the point of having a preference for Indiana kids in regard to the last 4 or 5 roster spots? What kind of advantage does that provide? I've never heard of Welmer. Sellers is not even close to being a Big Ten player.

You're grasping at straws.

the point is, neither are April, Priller, Jurkin, Maniru, etc.... If we are going to waste scholarships, we might as well sign local kids (I'd rather not waste them at all though-does Duke, UNC, Louisville, UCLA, etc... do this??) I'd love McIntosh this year over those others. He'd play over Stan, this year.

I wasnt sure McIntosh was B1G talent. He is proving me wrong.

I don't think he would unless he played over Zeisloft. The only reason Stan is playing right now is bc he has defended the post better than anyone in the lineup that he typically plays with and McIntosh couldn't do that.

Dunham probably would have cracked the lineup. The point is that there is talent in our own back yard that is better than a lot of the players on our team and they aren't being recruited/offered. Period

Not to mention a short drive to visit vs flying to the east coast with all the associated costs and time spent.

I think when you are looking at the back end of the roster there are a couple advantages for choosing Indiana guys. First, we should have had more opportunities to vet local kids. Not a fail safe see Hollowell but it should help. Secondly, we are more likely down the road to sign our top players from schools nearby. So by signing a local kid you have a chance to build a much stronger relationship with that kids school and coach which may pay off later. Again more likely to sign a top 4 or 5 star kid from an Indiana school than a Texas school.

Now if the out of state kid is a lot better get him but if basically a toss up then recruit local. I am fine with going to areas we have built success out of the region if we are establishing relationships consistently like we did with DMV.

Priller and April do not look to be BT caliber either.

Couldn't be more spot on with relationships and it's role in recruiting, bucks.

I wonder if we're going to be sorry we didn't get Derrik Smits. Yes, he's a 3-star but he's also an in-state 7-footer whose dad was a solid college and NBA player. Derrik doesn't have any "handler" or academic or off-the-court issues that I am aware of. He'll probably turn out to be a very good 4-year player for Valpo. I bet he'll see more game minutes in CBB than April ever will.

. McIntosh would DEFINITELY play over NZ.
