Upset with recruiting?

Recommended Posts

I think a lot depends on the timing of when a new coach were to come in if he would have success.

If Crean were to go after next year, it may be rough as (Yogi Hanner, and Ziesloft already gone) you would likely see Troy and JB2 bolt. OG and Morgan, depending on who it is would be high risk transfers.

Basically I think we would only really be left with Rojo, Holt, Hoetzel, and Davis of our current regular contributors as I don't think any of those guys necessarily have the juice to go pro at that time, but would likely be too invested in IU to transfer.

Still, the program would be in much better shape than it was when Crean stepped in and for that we should be thankful. I really don't understand the HATRED for him. He took us out of the dumps and he has reached his ceiling as a coach in all likelihood, while mostly representing our university extremely well and cleaning up the program.

Just to play this through. Yogi, Hanner, and NZ all graduate so they'll be gone whether Crean is here or not. TW and JBJ are going pro after next year if they can whether Crean stays or goes. Soooo...OG and Morgan? From what I've read neither of them are going to make or break us as a high level program. I personally don't care whether Crean stays or goes. I have no hatred for him. I think in many areas he's done a pretty good job but there are a lot of coaches who can do a good job on those areas. The ones who do a good job in those areas (mostly off-court) and win big consistently? That's what I wanna see. I'm getting to old to be patient! Lol if Crean can get it done great! If not? Look elsewhere.

I agree with you. As long as we do not collapse to end this year and all they key players return for next year Crean will be back next year. Then it gets interesting. As you pointed out, we lose a lot of key guys at the end of 2016. Next year we bring in some nice pieces but to be fair they will likely develop at best like Troy and VO did over a few years.

We will need more high end talent to add to guys like Rob, Emmit, Collin and the '15 kids. Yet as others have pointed out, some of the uncertainty is probably hurting Creans ability to recruit.

Imagine if you were recruiting against IU and wanted to create some doubt for a kid. Would you not point out that Creans contract become easier to buy out after 2016? I think it is going to get harder for him to recruit and only a real big run this year (not a fair expectation) or the commitment of a very good big man for next year will help offset that.

So what happens, let's say we make the tourney the next two years and even though we look to lose a lot of kids at the end of 2016 we have some highly ranked kids in 2017 that we can bring in IF we remove some of the doubt on who the coach is. Would you be ready to extend Crean next year? If not, the current doubt that hovers over him combined with his contract buyout becoming a minor issue will make it very hard to recruit.

I think it was Davis who used this angle to extend his contract and many others do too.

The next few years are going to be interesting.

Not saying we shouldn't sign out of state talent. I would have signed Fischer over Welmer without a doubt. It's going out of state and offering the lower rated guys like Jurkin, Capo, April, Priller, Robinson, etc instead of offering kids in your own backyard like Dunham, McIntosh, Sellers, etc. Why do we do that? You realize those 3 never even received offers from IU? Just blows my mind.

U know another thing that comes with homeschooled kids playing for IU. It's pride! When they get into a rivalry game or get down to NW by double digits then a little extra motivation kicks in with each kid to represent. Some may think I'm crazy but it's true
