This is what happens for the majority of incoming Freshman in America. They don't set the world on fire like the top 1%'ers and they gradually become very good players. I never understood why he got a bad rap for not averaging 12 and 5 last year.

His highlights didn't show much of an athlete, and he's not a good "athlete" but he is a smart "basketball player".  People ooh and ahh over players that can jump.

it was more than that. Those that followed his HS career noticed a steady decline or plateau in production/potential. Jalen Coleman seized the spotlight. His trajectory in HS mirrored his freshmen results and THAT is why many, including myself, are surprised by his play.

He's really impressed me and made me look foolish for my initial thoughts on him as a freshman. My only complaint about him isn't even about him. I hate when Crean plays Hartman and Troy as our forwards without a big man. Hartman cannot protect the rim (and he shouldn't be asked to). I believe HMP or Holt should be on the floor at all times.

The coaches (whose livelihoods depend on being right on this) obviously saw something they liked. If they believe they can fill the gaps in a player's game, which again is their job, then why not trust that? They aren't always right, but all you can do is trust them on their evaluations. Hoping a kid transfers after his freshman year because he didn't produce and "plateaued" in high school is mighty unfair in my book.

Yeah, I mean I'll go bonkers over a Troy Williams highlight tape as much as the next guy, but guys that know how to get the job done without the physical gifts are just as exciting to me.

agreed in general but as superfans, assessing team and talent is fun. Never "hoped" he transferred. Just seemed to be on the AE track. Also, he committed rather early to those staff you are referring to and his game seemed different in HS from that point on. Fair to question.

Definitely fair to question, but I generally choose to see how it shakes out over a couple years before making a final decision. Just how I look at it, and I know others look deeper into it than myself. And I also love keeping track of who we're going after and doing my own evaluations. I tend to trust the staff way more than some do even if I'm not in love with someone we sign (Emmitt being a major example), but again that's just my personal viewpoint on things. I'm overall pretty patient with player development because sometimes it takes a summer or 2 to start seeing it happen. Other times it just never clicks, but no one is 100% on recruiting.

Personally I literally couldn't possibly care less about what a highlight tape looks like because they can make anyone look good.  I'll take the guy that just knows how to get it done 11 times out of 10.

He's quickly becoming one of my favorite guys on the team. As a sophomore he is already contributing more than ever expected. His basketball IQ is what sets him apart. That along with the extreme amount of hustle you see from him. He is going to be a terrific 4 year player.

He definitely brings a lot of hustle and his shot is falling. The only place he kinda kills us is on D. He is a classic example of over helping and he leaves his man wide open on the wing, and Hartman usually does a full sprint towards his man only to run past him with his arms flailing in the air. Not my favorite thing to see in the game but I will definitely give him credit. I was ready to write him off at the beginning of the year and he has definitely improved.

Yea who would have though we would be discussing Hartman being first man off the bench. If that was called out early on we probably would assume that we were horrible. I mean he showed signs of being a smart player last year but just scared to shoot. Now we all breathe a sigh of relief when he is in lol. I feel like hartman may become my new favorite player.

I want the dude to get a little hot and get 15 or so one game and exit to a nice ovation
